  • In this review, theoretical approaches of imaging and diffraction in electron microscopy are introduced which allows the diffraction patterns and images to be treated with equal facility and emphasized the relationships between them. The coherent wave optics, incoherent wave imaging theory were introduced. The idea of Abbe theory was also introduced. Varoius phase contrast theories in small angle approximation were derived including the wave theory on Multi-component system.

  • Frequency-multiplication technology based on microwave photonic principles can be used to generate microwave and millimeter wave signals with a wide frequency tuning range. However, the existing cascaded external modulation frequency-tupling scheme needs to ensure the phase coherence of the modulated Radio Frequency (RF) signal, while the phase modulation directly limits the frequency tuning range of the external modulation frequency multiplication. In this paper, a novel approach for generating an incoherent frequency 12-tupling signal with cascade modulation is proposed. The structure of cascaded dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulators can generate a frequency 12-tupling signal. The proposed structure uses no filter or phase control of the RF driving signal. Microwave photonic frequency-tupling was realized under incoherent conditions. Software simulations and experiments validated the proposed structure and proved that it can generate frequency 12-tupling microwave signals under incoherent conditions. Both the frequency range and reliability of the frequency-tupling system has been improved by the proposed structure.

  • In this paper, we demonstrated, through experiment and numerical reconstruction, that the bias and the conjugate image, which are main drawbacks in incoherent holography, can be removed. By using wave plates of the modified triangular interferometer, which was made by adding simple passive devices to the conventional triangular interferometer, we adjusted the relative phase differences of two optical waves traveling in clockwise and counterclockwise. In this way, we obtained four intensity patterns, and then by manipulating the four intensity patterns electronically we obtained the complex hologram without bias and the conjugate image. Comparing numerical reconstruction results of the complex hologram with numerical reconstruction results of the hologram obtained from the conventional triangular interferometer, we demonstrated that bias and the conjugate image can be removed using the modified triangular interferometer.

  • High-energy, high-power, quasi-continuous wave (QCW) operation of double-clad Yb fiber lasers incorporating an incoherent signal combiner is reported. We constructed four efficient, high-power Yb fiber lasers, each of which produced rectangular pulses at 1080 nm with a pulse energy greater than 15 J, and a pulse duration of 10 ms at a repetition rate of 10 Hz, corresponding to an average power of over 150 W and a peak power of over 1.5 kW for ~200 W of incident pump power at 915 nm. These laser outputs were combined by a homemade incoherent fiber signal combiner with low loss, yielding a maximum peak power of ~6.0 kW in a beam with $M^2{\approx}12.5$. The detailed laser characteristics and prospects for further power scaling in QCW operation are discussed.

  • We have present an all-optical technique to significantly reduce the dispersion penalty of a spectrum-sliced channel in high-speed and long-distance transmissions. We have reduced the necessary optical bandwidth for the 2.5 Gb/s incoherent light transmission down to 0.1 nm by expanding the optical bandwidth of a received signal. The optical bandwidth expansion was realized using the intra-channel fiber four-wave mixing at the receiver resulting in an improvement of th signal-to-noise ratio of the received light channel. We have successfully demonstrated the transmission of a 2.5 Gb/s NRZ signal with the 0.1 nm bandwidth over a 300 km dispersion-shifted fiber. An error floor occurs at $1{\times}10^{-5}$ BER without the optical bandwidth expansion. With the optical bandwidth expansion, however, the error floor decreases to less than $1{\times}10^{-10}$. The transmission penalty was less than 0.5 dB at $1{\times}10^{-10}$ BER. To our knowledge, the optical bandwidth of 0.1 nm used in our experiment is the narrowest optical bandwidth reported so far.

  • We present an overview on the observation and research for the China seas using both field experiments and multi-sensor satellite data at ORSI/OUC, covering two topics: (1) Spatial and temporal distribution of internal waves in the China Seas and retrieval of internal wave parameters; (2) Retrieval, validation, and cross-comparison of multi-sensor ocean color data as well as ocean optics in situ experiments in the East China Sea. We also present an incoherent Doppler wind lidar, developed by ORSI, and its observation for marine-atmospheric boundary layer.
