Facial Morphology and Growth in Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate Patients (편측성(片側性) 순렬(脣裂) 및 구개렬환자(口蓋裂患者)의 안면형태(顔面形態)와 성장(成長)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • A roentgeno cephalometric comparative study was undertaken to reveal significant differences of craniofacial morphology and growth between unilateral cleft lip and palate and normal individuals. The material for this study consisted 32 subjects with repaired unilateral cleft lip and palate (27 male, 5 female) and 44 normal subjects (22 male, 22 female). The analysis was performed by Coben's method and the measurements were compared by Student's t-test. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. In the UCLP subjects there is definite decrease in midfacial growth, so they showed concave profile. 2. The ramus inclination angle and AR-GO of UCLP subjects are larger than normal subjects. 3. The craniofacial height of UCLP subjects is smaller than normal subjects, especially in midface. 4. The lower part of craniofacial height of UCLP subjects is larger than normal subjects.

  • For nonhomogeneous and anisotropic rocks such as schist, shale, etc, a method to determine the anisotropic elastic constants was proposed. Many authors have investigated in detail the behavior elastic constants of anisotropy rocks(Pinto 1970, Amadei 1983, 1992, Amadei & Savage 1989). They concluded that equations of elastic constants E$_1$, E$_2$ and G$_2$ can be derived from the measured strains in arbitrary three directions. And, modulus of elasticity varies according to the inclination of discontinuity in specimens. If we attach three strain gages in accordance with the directions of anisotropy on the rock specimen under uni-axial compression and diametral compression tests, anisotropy elastic constants can be determined by these equations. With this method, the degree of anisotropy will be easily evaluated by simple laboratory test. This paper presents the results of elastic constants due to the angle of bedding planes of anisotropic rock, such as shale, in uni-axial compression and diametral compression tests

  • In this paper, experimental study on the wan impingement spray of the common-rail diesel injector is performed. To examine the effect of various factors on the development of spray impinging on the wall, experiments were conducted at the various injection pressures. ambient pressures, wan distances from the injector tip, wall temperatures, and angles of wall inclination. The behaviors of the impingement spray ate visualized by using laser sheet methods and a ICCD camera. It is shown that the spray path penetration of the wall impingement spray increases with the increase of injection pressure, wall distance. wall temperature, wall angle. On the other hand the spray path penetration of the wan impingement spray decreases with the increase of ambient pressure.

  • In the view of the fact that mobile robot in nuclear facilities should be able to turn in narrow space, go over obstacles, and climb stairs for the inspection and maintenance, a robot, named as KAEROT, is developed. It adopts 2DWIS (2-Driving Wheels, 1-Steering) and has three planetary wheels that are composed of two star-like arms and three small wheels. The experiments were carried out in two locomotion methods; (1) by controlling the rear wheel speed as a function of steering angle, and (2) by using inclination and stair-detection sensor to control the position of planetary and small wheel. The developed robot moved on the floor with stability. Results from the experiment on the rectangular obstacle as well as the computer simulation showed a feasibility on the stairs.

  • In the ball end-milling process of a 3-dimensional mold, it is important to select cutting conditions and tool path considering the geometrical shape of a workpiece to reduce machining time. In this study, experiments were performed to decide allowable feed rate not breaking stability of system for different geometrical shapes. It was found that downcut is more stable than upcutting in machining side wall and downward is preferable to upward in inclined part depending on the angle of the inclination and depth of cut.

Simplified modeling of slide-fed curtain coating flow

  • Simplified model of slide-fed curtain coating flow has been developed and tested in this study. It rests on the sheet profile equations for curtain thickness in curtain flow and its trajectory derived by the integral momentum balance approach of Higgins and Scriven (1979) and Kistler (1983). It also draws on the film profile equation of film thickness variation in flow down a slide. The equations have been solved in finite difference approximation by Newton iteration with continuation. The results show that how inertia (Rey­nolds number), surface tension (capillary number), inclination angle of the slide, and air pressure difference across the curtain affect sheet trajectory and thickness profile. It has been revealed that approximate models can be useful to easily analyze coating flow dynamics without complex computations, giving qualitative agreement with full theory and with experiment.

  • This paper presents the derivation of an analytical expression for the dynamic active thrust from c-${\phi}$ (c = cohesion, ${\phi}$ = angle of shearing resistance) soil backfill on rigid retaining walls with wall friction and adhesion. The derivation uses the pseudo-static approach considering tension cracks in the backfill, a uniform surcharge on the backfill, and horizontal and vertical seismic loadings. The development of an explicit analytical expression for the critical inclination of the failure plane within the soil backfill is described. It is shown that the analytical expression gives the same results for simpler special cases previously reported in the literature.

  • The motion of propeller driven airplanes, flying at constant speed on ascending or descending helical trajectories is analyzed. The dynamical abilities of the airplane are shown to result in restrictions on the ranges of the geometrical parameters of the helical path. The physical quantities taken into account are the variation of air density with altitude, the airplane mass change due to fuel consumption, its load factor, its lift coefficient, and the thrust its engine can produce. Formulas are provided for determining all the airplane dynamical parameters on the trajectory. A procedure is proposed for the construction of tables from which the flyability of trajectories at a given angle of inclination and radius can be read, with the corresponding minimum and maximum speeds allowed, the final altitude reached and the amount of fuel burned. Sample calculations are shown for the Cessna 182, a Silver Fox like unmanned aerial vehicle, and the C-130 Hercules.

  • A fundamental study on warm incremental forming of a magnesium alloy sheet has been carried out. In order to enhance the incremental formability of the magnesium alloy sheet, a local heating device was newly designed and manufactured. Through the incremental forming tests of AZ31 under various forming conditions, the effects of process parameters such as the temperature, feeding depth per cycle, and inclination angle on the incremental formability of AZ31 were investigated. In addition, conventional FLDs at elevated temperatures were constructed experimentally and applied to predict the forming failure.

  • A direct tilted-ring fitting method allows us to investigate kinematic structure of spiral galaxies. By employing the method to high-resolution HI data cubes, we can more easily trace warp characteristics of spiral galaxies than ever. In this contribution, we make use of TiRiFiC to VLA HI data cube of spiral galaxies in Virgo cluster, and present our preliminary yet interesting results. The TiRiFiC (Tilted-Ring-Fitting-Code) is publicly available code that provides 'best-fit' tilted-ring parameters (i.e. position angle and inclination) via chi-square minimization technique. We also discuss possible biases (e.g., resolution dependency) and its effect on our conclusions.
