  • A two-dimensional numerical model is developed to investigate the phenomenon of forced seiche caused by the incident long waves. This model is applied to Young-il Bay and Pohang New Harbor, where the seiche is most frequently observed and the damage of the seiche is serious compared with the other harbors in Korea. Some results on this study are as follows; 1. The natural periods of the first two modes obtained from the present model are about 70 and 25 minutes respectively for Young-il Bay, and about 25 and 7.5 minutes for Pohang New Harbor. These results are well consistent with those obtained by the theoretical formula, the spectral analysis, and the statistical investigation of the recorded data. 2. Since the fundamental natural period of Pohang New Harbor is almost the same as the second natural period of Young-il Bay, the seiche in Pohang New Harbor can be strongly amplified by the Oscillation in Young-il Bay. Therefore, the most strong seiche in Pohang New Harbor can occur when the long wave of about 25-minute period come into Young-il Bay.

  • A collection policy (or a collection development policy) is a document that archival institutions must have to allow them to build their collections legitimately and consistently. Digital archives often lack sustainable financial and systematic supports. Thus, it is especially important for digital archives to have a policy for consistent collection activities. Digital archives have a different set of characteristics from physical records, and these characteristics should be considered in a collection policy. This study was initiated to create such a policy for the No Gun Ri Digital Archive. It reviewed existing literature for collection policies in archives and digital archives. Moreover, it examined several cases of digital archives and their policies to identify the necessary elements as well as the legal and procedural coverages for digital content and services. Furthermore, it studied the unique characteristics of the No Gun Ri incident and the No Gun Ri Digital Archive. Based on such investigation, a collection policy for the No Gun Ri Digital Archive was suggested. It is believed that suggesting a practical collection policy will provide a useful precedent for future digital archive projects.

  • In this paper, we deal with modulation classification method using WT capable of classifying incident digital signals without a priori information. These key features should have good properties of sensitive with modulation types and insensitive with SNR variation. The 4 key features for modulation recognition are selected using WT coefficients, which have the property of insentive to the changing of noise. The numerical simulations for classifying 8 digital modulation types using these features are peformed. The numerical simulations of the 3 types (i.e. DTC, MDC, and SVMC) of modulation classifiers are performed the investigation of classification accuracy and execution time to design the modulation classification module in software radio. The simulation result indicated that the execution time of MDC and DTC was best and MDC and SVMC showed good classification performance.

  • It is important to establish water treatment technologies for drinking water because Korea belongs to water-stressed country. Leachate from recent incident of foot-and-mouth disease has become an opportunity to be aware of the need to manage water quality. Water purifiers are adopted to four or five steps of filtration process. Each steps are composed of a sediment filter, a pre-carbon filter, an UF or a RO membrane filter and a post-carbon filter. And additionally a ceramic filter can be used as a final stage. In this study, operational conditions in each steps are examined and characteristics of each filters are investigated. SEM analysis is used for filter surface and shape investigation using 6 commercial samples. Pore sizes of the sediment filter, the UF membrane filter, and the RO membrane filter are 30~47 ${\mu}m$, 0.005~0.5 ${\mu}m$, and 0.025~0.25 ${\mu}m$, respectively. Specific surface areas of activated carbons are ranged from 622 to 1,308 $m^2/g$.

  • This study investigates the characteristics of stem waves along a vertical wall generated by obliquely incident random waves through laboratory experiments conducted in a wave basin and numerical simulations using REF/DIF S model developed by Kirby and $\ddot{O}zkan$(1994). The investigation is focused on the effect of random waves on the propagation characteristics of stem waves and the difference or similarity between monochromatic and random waves. The results of REF/DIF S model are compared with laboratory measurements and good agreements are obtained. The relative significant wave height along a wall is almost same with monochromatic condition, but the wave pattern along normal to the wall shows a significant difference.

  • In this paper, a wave-induced swirl water chamber (SWC) for breakwater and wave power generation is introduced and its applicability to wave power generation in the coastal waters of Korea is investigated. The SWC type of wave power generation is a way to drive a turbine using the unidirectional swirl flow that is induced in the back of a curtain wall of a breakwater due to incident waves. The typical wave characteristics are obtained by analyzing the annual statistical wave data from KHOA (Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration). A numerical analysis is carried out on the variations in the SWC entrance height, wave height, and different installation conditions. For the numerical analysis, a commercial code, Fluent based on FVM, is used. As the entrance height decreases, the mass flow rate through the entrance is rarely changed, whereas the magnitude of the flow velocity of the smaller entrance height is greater than the other ones, which is better for the formation of an SWC swirl flow inside and the flow kinetic energy at the entrance. In cases of installation conditions where a wall is place behind and under SWC, it has been shown that the mass flow rate through the entrance is greater than that in the open condition, and sufficient flow kinetic energy is generated in the entrance for wave power generation. However, the swirl flow kinetic energy is relatively small. Thus, in the future, it is necessary to study the swirl flow generation, which is affected by the SWC shape.

  • Objectives: The extent of the occupational cancer burden has rarely been estimated in Korea. The aim of this study is to provide an estimation of the population attributable fraction (PAF) of occupational cancer in Korea. Methods: Nine kinds of Group 1 carcinogens addressed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and 7 kinds of cancer were selected for the target carcinogens and diseases, respectively. The prevalence of carcinogen-exposed workers was estimated and correction factors were applied so that the value would be representative of the total population. Data on relative risk (RR) were taken from IARC reports and were compared with the RRs from the studies on Korean workers. The PAF was estimated according to Levin's formula. Results: The proportion of the general Korean population exposed to carcinogens was 9.7%. The PAF of total cancer was 1.1% for incident cancer cases and 1.7% for cancer deaths. The PAFs of lung cancer and leukemia were 7.0% and 4.5%, respectively. With the RRs reported from Korean studies, the PAF for lung cancer and leukemia were 3.7% and 3.4%, respectively. Conclusion: The PAF in this study (1.1%) was lower than that reported in previous studies (2-4%) from developed countries. Considering that only 9 of the 29 kinds of Group 1 carcinogens were included in this study, the PAF might be underestimated. However, because the process of industrialization in Korea differs from that which occurred in other developed countries, 1.1% of the PAF might be appropriate for Korea.

  • Among the various wave power systems, Salter's duck (rotor) is one of the most effective wave absorbers for extracting wave energy. The rotor shape is designed such that the front part faces the direction of the incident wave, which forces it to bob up and down due to wave-induced water particle motion, whereas the rear part, which is mostly circular in shape, reflects no waves. The asymmetric geometric shape of the duck makes it absorb energy efficiently. In the present study, the rotor was investigated using WAMIT (a program based on the linear potential flow theory in three-dimensional diffraction/radiation analyses) in the frequency domain and verified using OrcaFlex (design and analysis program of marine system) in the time domain. Then, an experimental investigation was conducted to assess the performance of the rotor motion based on the model scale in a two-dimensional (2D) wave tank. Initially, a free decay test (FDT) was carried out to obtain the viscous damping coefficient. The pitch response was extracted from the experimental time series in a periodic regular wave for two different wave heights (1 cm and 3 cm). In addition, the viscous damping coefficient was calculated from the FDT result and fluid forces, obtained from WAMIT, are incorporated into the final response of the rotor. Finally, a comparative study based on experimental and numerical results (WAMIT & OrcaFlex) was performed to confirm the performance reliability of the designed rotor.

  • Background: In this study, we compared the incidents of humidifier disinfectants and incidents of mild hepatitis in Japan to highlight the differences in government response in the health care field in terms of "chain of responsibility". Methods: We examined whether the three mechanisms of action and the chain of responsibility hypothesis were applied to compare the cases of Korea and Japan. The incident of Japan occurred in 1987 in Misawa city, Aomori prefecture. In the 1990s, the safety of blood products increased dramatically. However, relief for infected victims was neglected. Green Cross did not notify the parties. In Korea, in the spring of 2011, a number of lung disease patients were accidentally admitted to a hospital in Seoul, and a female patient with respiratory failure symptoms expired. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted animal tests and the Ministry of Health and Welfare issued an order for forced collection of humidifier disinfectants. Results: In the case of Japan, the Ministry of Health and Welfare had to take responsibility for follow-up measures such as the investigation of the cause, so it was tied to a "chain of responsibility". However, in the case of Korea, the Ministry of Health and Welfare was free from the chain. Conclusion: Through the comparison between the cases of Japan and Korea, we confirmed that whether or not a government organization chooses to conceal responsibility depends on its past behavior, which is whether it is free from the chain of responsibility or not. Therefore, it was reaffirmed that an organization (ministry or department) free from the chain of responsibility must exist within the government.

  • To investigate the business corruption, the obtainments of the business data such as personnel, manufacture, accounting and distribution etc., is absolutely necessary. Futhermore, the investigator should have the systematic extraction solution from the business data of the enterprise database, because most company manage each business data through the distributed database system, In the general business environment, the database exists in the system with upper layer application and big size file server. Besides, original resource data which input by user are distributed and stored in one or more table following the normalized rule. The earlier researches of the database structure analysis mainly handled the table relation for database's optimization and visualization. But, in the point of the digital forensic, the data, itself analysis is more important than the table relation. This paper suggests the extraction technique from the table relation which already defined in the database. Moreover, by the systematic analysis process based on the domain knowledge, analyzes the original business data structure stored in the database and proposes the solution to extract table which is related incident.
