In this study, laboratory test, in-situ vane shear test and piezocone penetration test in the study area were conducted to investigate the engineering characteristics of soft soils at Cheongra District, Songdo District in Incheon City, the west coast of Gyeonggi province, and Sihwa District in Ansan city. The correlations among compression index, and in-situ vane shear test, and cone resistance were obtained. The variations of liquid limit, plasticity index, water content and compression index with respect to depth exhibit strong similarity. This means that they have strong correlations, which can be used to evaluate the local characteristics of the study area. Thus, the correlations between compression index and physical properties were analysed to investigate the engineering characteristics of soft soil in the study area. The relationships between the measured piezocone factor by empirical methods, and undrained shear strength obtained by triaxial compression test or in-situ vane shear test were compared. It shows the significant correlation and piezocone factors, $N_{kT}$are suggested for the study area.
Knowledge of ground thermal properties is most important for the proper design of BHE(borehole heat exchanger) systems. The configure type, pipe size and thermal performance of the BHE is highly dependent on the ground source heatpump system-efficiency and instruction cost. Thermal response tests with mobile measurement devices were developed primarily for in-situ determination of design data for Standing Column Well apply. The main purpose has been to determine in-situ values of effective ground thermal conductivity and thermal resistance, including the effect of ground-water flow and natural convection in the boreholes. The test rig is set up on a some trailer, and contains a sub-circulation pump, a boiler, temperature sensors, flow meter and a data logger for recording the temperature and circulation fluid flow data. A constant heating power is injected into the SCW through the test rig and the resulting temperature change in the SCW is recorded. The recorded temperature data are analysed with a line-source model, which gives the effective in-situ values of rock thermal conductivity and thermal resistance of SCW.

The Performance of U-tube ground heat exchanger for geothermal heat Pump systems depends on the thermal properties of the soil, as well as grout or backfill materials in the borehole. In-situ tests provide a means of estimating some of these properties. In this study, in-situ thermal response tests were completed on two vertical boreholes, 130 m deep with 62 mm diameter high density polyethylene U-tubes. The tests were conducted by adding a monitored amount of heat to water over a $17\~18$ hour period for each vertical boreholes. By monitoring the water temperatures entering and exiting the loop and heat load, overall thermal conductivity values of grout/soil formation were determined. Two parameter estimation models for evaluation of thermal response test data were compared when applied on the same temperature response data. One model is based on line-source theory and the other is a numerical one-dimensional finite difference model. The average thermal conductivity deviation between measured data and these models is of the magnitude $1\%$ to $5\%$.

In this study, in-situ performance test of an air source heat pump which has a arted capacity of 10 RT is carried out. Since test conditions, such as indoor and outdoor air conditions cannot be controlled to satisfy the standard test conditions, experiments are done with the inlet air conditions as they exist. To estimate the performance for other conditions, he heat pump is modeled with a small number of selected parameters. The values of the parameters are determined from the few measurements measured on-site during normal operation. A simulation program is developed to calculate cooling capacity and power consumption t any other operating conditions. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experiment. This study provides a method of an on-site performance diagnosis of an air source heat pump.

In this study, a method for estimating the effective stress of clays using in-situ penetration test(PCPT) result is proposed. The proposed method is based on a correlation between the PCPT results and strength increment ratio. According to proposed method, no additional testing procedure for collecting undisturbed soil sample is required, which can reduce overall testing cost. To verify this method, for analysis, various analytical solutions were adopted and used. Measured and predicted effective stress are compared on the test results. The verification sites consist of a variety of soil condition. From comparison, it is seen that predicted value of effective stress using the propose method match well those from measured results.

In this study, in-situ performance test of a wet surface finned-tube evaporator of an air source heat pump which has a rating capacity of 20 RT is carried out. Since test conditions, such as indoor and outdoor air conditions cannot be controlled to satisfy the standard test conditions, experiments are done with the inlet air conditions as they exist. From the experimental data, air side heat and mass transfer coefficients were calculated by the well known heat and mass transfer analogy and tube-by-tube method. Since current procedure underpredicted the experimental sensible heat factor (SHF), a proper empirical parameter was introduced to predict the experimental data with satisfactory results. This study provides the method of evaluating the heat and mass transfer coefficients of a wet surface finned-tube evaporator of which in-situ performance test is necessary.

As the wafer geometric requirements continuously complicated and minutes in tens of nanometers, the expectation of real-time add-on sensors for in-situ plasma process monitoring is rapidly increasing. Various industry applications, utilizing plasma impedance monitor (PIM) and optical emission spectroscopy (OES), on etch end point detection, etch chemistry investigation, health monitoring, fault detection and classification, and advanced process control are good examples. However, process monitoring in semiconductor manufacturing industry requires non-invasiveness. The hypothesis behind the optical monitoring of plasma induced ion current is for the monitoring of plasma induced charging damage in non-invasive optical way. In plasma dielectric via etching, the bombardment of reactive ions on exposed conductor patterns may induce electrical current. Induced electrical charge can further flow down to device level, and accumulated charges in the consecutive plasma processes during back-end metallization can create plasma induced charging damage to shift the threshold voltage of device. As a preliminary research for the hypothesis, we performed two phases experiment to measure the plasma induced current in etch environmental condition. We fabricated electrical test circuits to convert induced current to flickering frequency of LED output, and the flickering frequency was measured by high speed optical plasma monitoring system (OPMS) in 10 kHz. Current-frequency calibration was done in offline by applying stepwise current increase while LED flickering was measured. Once the performance of the test circuits was evaluated, a metal pad for collecting ion bombardment during plasma etch condition was placed inside etch chamber, and the LED output frequency was measured in real-time. It was successful to acquire high speed optical emission data acquisition in 10 kHz. Offline measurement with the test circuitry was satisfactory, and we are continuously investigating the potential of real-time in-situ plasma induce current measurement via OPMS.

Groundwater flow in confined aquifer and heat transport in underground geologic media are using same governing equation(line source) like well fuction. Therefore the conventional slope method using only later data obtained from in-situ thermal response test to determine the thermal conductivity of vertical geothermal heat exchanger(GHEX) is basically identical with one of Theis straight line method of aquifer test under artesian condition. In case that the pumping rate(Q, $m^3$/d) and drawdown(s,m) which are used for input data of existing hydrogeologic computer programs for aquifer test are replaced and converted to supplying heat energy per unit length of bore hole(Q/L,w/m or Kcal/h.m) and temperatures (T,$^{\circ}C$)measured at in and out-let of GHEX as in put data respectively, thermal conductivity around geothermal heat exchanger can be easily estimated without any special modification of the existing hydrogeologic computer program. Two numbers of time series temperature variation data obtained from in situ geothermal response test are analized using Theismethods(standard curve and straight line method) by using existing aquifer test program and conventional Slope method proposed by ASHRAE. The results show that thermal conductivity values estimated by two straight methods are identical and the difference of estimated values between standard curve methods and Slope method are also within acceptable ranges. In general, the thermal conductivity estimated from Theis straight linemethod gives more accurate value than the one of Slope method due to that Slope method uses only visual matching otherwise Theis method uses automatic curve matching estimation with reducing RSS.
When a saturated clay is sampled from a borehole in an undisturbed manner, the exerted negative pore water pressure restricts the volume expansion. The vertical and horizontal stresses to which the clay was subjected in the ground are smaller and larger than this isotropically confining stress equivalent to the mean principal stress in the ground, respectively. Therefore the sample expands vertically and shrinks laterally under an undrained condition. In the ordinary consolidation test, the sample thus deformed is trimmed to fit the inside of the consolidometer ring. Thus, the specimen generates larger consolidation displacement due to confining larger horizontal stress when in-situ effective pressure is loaded. The specimen does not reproduce the in-situ consolidation behavior, In this paper, considering sample deformation, the test specimen is made to expand laterally to fit the inside of the ring in the undrained manner when the in-situ effective pressure is loaded. And applicability of this proposed test procedure was verified; results from the conventional consolidation test procedure are also discussed.

Since early in the 90's, the need for construction of underground rock structures such as long and large section traffic tunnel, energy storage cavern, industrial facility, etc. has been largely increased because the Korean territory is not wide and about 65 % of the land consists of mountainous region. The initial rock stress measurement has been widely conducted to provide the quantitative information on the stress state of engineering site at the design stage of underground rock structures. Among the diverse methods developed for measuring rock stress, hydraulic fracturing test is most popularly used because it is applicable at pre-construction stage and has no limit in testing depth. In this paper, the characteristics of initial rock stress state in mountainous region were studied on the basis of the in-situ hydraulic fracturing stress measurement results from the 60 test boreholes in various parts of Korea.
