  • When choosing the support pattern of tunnel, the characteristics of rock are identified from the result of the surface geologic survey, boring, and geophysical prospecting and laboratory test. And a rock mass rating is classified and excavation method and standard support pattern are designed considering rock classification, domestic and international construction practices, numerical analysis. According to the revised design standard for tunnel, it was recommended to classify the rock mass rating for the design of tunnel into a rating based on RMR. If necessary, it proposed a flexible standard allowed applying more atomized the rock mass rating and Q-System. Also, the resonable verification of the support pattern must be accompanied because the factors affecting the structure and behavior of ground during the construction of tunnel are the main factors of uncertainty factors such as the nature of ground, ground water and the characteristics of structural materials. These days, such verification method is getting more specialized and diversified. In this study, the empirical method, numerical analysis and comparative analysis of in situ measurements were used to prove the reasonableness in the support pattern by RMR and Q-value on the Imha Dam emergency spillway.

  • The electrical characteristics of soils have been used for investigating soil properties. The purpose of this study is the development and application of the electrical resistivity cone probe (ERCP) for the evelation of the porosity in the field with high precision. The shape of the probe tip is a cone shape to minimize the disturbance during penetration. In addition, the four terminal pair configuration is adopted to minimize the electrical interference. The electrical resistances are continuously measured during penetration of the ERCP using penetration rigs with 0.33 mm/sec penetration rate at Incheon and Busan sites. With the measured resistance profile and electrical resisivity of electrolyte of undisturbed samples, soil porosity profiles are obtained by using Archie's law. The empirical coefficients for the Archie's law are obtained based on the electrolyte extracted from the undisturbed samples. The estimated porosity profiles show similar trends to those of in-situ penetration tests such as SPT, CPT, and DMT. This study suggests that the ERCP may be an effective tool for the porosity estimation in the field with minimum disturbance.

  • The unsaturated soil column tests were carried out for weathered gneiss soil and weathered granite soil in order to obtain the relationship between rainfall intensity and infiltration velocity of rainfall on the basis of different unit weight conditions of soil. In this study, volumetric water content and pore water pressure were measured using TDR sensors and tensiometers at constant time interval. For the column test, three different unit weights were used as in-situ condition, loose condition and dense condition, and rainfall intensities were selected as 20 mm/h and 50 mm/h. In 20 mm/h rainfall intensity condition, average rainfall infiltration velocities for both gneiss and weathered granite soils were obtained as $2.854{\times}10^{-3}$ cm/s ~ $1.297{\times}10^{-3}$ cm/s for different unit weight values and $2.734{\times}10^{-3}$ cm/s ~ $1.707{\times}10^{-3}$ cm/s, respectively. In 50 mm/h rainfall intensity condition, rainfall infiltration velocities were obtained as $4.509{\times}10^{-3}$ cm/s ~ $2.016{\times}10^{-3}$ cm/s and $4.265{\times}10^{-3}$ cm/s ~ $3.764{\times}10^{-3}$ cm/s respectively. The test results showed that the higher rainfall intensity and the lower unit weight of soil, the faster average infiltration velocity. In addition, the weathered granite soils had faster rainfall infiltration velocities than those of the weathered gneiss soils except for the looser unit weight conditions. This is due to the fact that the weathered granite soil had more homogeneous particle size, smaller unit weight condition and larger porosity.

  • In current design practice, the shear wave velocity (Vs) of the core and rock-fill zone of a dam, one of the characteristics essential for seismic response design, is seldom determined by field tests. This is because the borehole seismic method is often restricted in application, due to stabilisation activities and concern for the security of the dam structure, and surface wave methods are limited by unfavourable in-situ site conditions. Consequently, seismic response design for a dam may be performed using Vs values that are assumed, or empirically determined. To estimate Vs for the core and rock-fill zone, and to find a reliable method for measuring Vs, seismic surface wave methods have been applied on the crest and sloping surface of the existing 'M' dam. Numerical analysis was also performed to verify the applicability of the surface wave method to a rock-fill dam. Through this numerical analysis and comparison with other test results, the applicability of the surface wave method to rock-fill dams was verified.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$, $Na_2HPO_4{\cdot}12H_2O$, $CaHPO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$, $Ca(H_2PO_4)_2{\cdot}H_2O$ and $H_3PO_4$ for the stabilization of soils contaminated with multi-metals containing Pb, Cd and As. The application rate of stabilizers to soils was determined based on $PO_4/Pb_{total}$ molar ratio of 0.5, 1, 2, 4. The results of Korea Standard Test and TCLP (EPA Method 1311) showed the reduction of metal leachabilities below the regulatory limits for Pb and Cd when $H_3PO_4$ and $Ca(H_2PO_4)_2{\cdot}H_2O$ were applied. However, stabilization efficiency for Cd was low and in case of As leaching concentration increased rather. It is considered that $PO_4$ reacted effectively $Pb^{2+}$ due to leaching Pb under low pH condition created by adding $H_3PO_4$. Accordingly Pb was stabilized by dissolution and precipitation of hydroxypyromorphite. From the change of metals fraction using sequential extraction procedure when $H_3PO_4$ applied as a stabilizer, we confirmed that residual fraction increased more than 60% and this result was accorded with XRD analysis that detected only hydroxypyromorphite peak in $H_3PO_4$.

  • It is very improtant to evaluate the reliable nonlinear deformational characteristics of soils not only in the analysis of geotechnical structures under working stress conditions but also for the soil dynamic problems. Field testings such as crosshole and pressuremeter tests can be used to determine the modulus of soils under in-situ conditions, but it is not possible to determine the modulus over the entire strain amplitude range. Laboratory methods such as resonant column 1 torsional shear test can be used to determine the modulus over the whole strain amplitude range, but it is very difficult to obtain the representative undisturbed samples on the sixte. For the reliable evaluation of nonlinear deformation characteristics of soils on a typical site, small strain modulus obtained from field testy and nomalized modulus reduction curve determined by laboratory bests need to be combined. In this paper, laboratory and Held testy were performed at a sixte which consisted of granite wearthered residual boils to evaluate the nonlinear deformational characteristics of coils such as the effects of strain amplitude, loading frequency, confining pressure and sample disturbance. It has been shorn that when the effects of these factors are properly taken into account, the stiffness values evaluated by various field and labrotary tests are comparable to each other fairly well. Finally, the procedure to evaluate the nonlinear deformstional characteristics of the sixte was proposed.

  • The authors of the present study report the prenatal detection of a chromosomal abnormality with additional satellites on the distal short arm of chromosome 8. A 35-year-old woman was referred for amniocentesis because of her advanced maternal age and positive result for maternal serum screening test. Cytogenetic analysis of cultured amniocytes showed a satellite 8p chromosome. The satellite 8p chromosome was positive for nucleolus organizer region (NOR) staining. The parents' karyotypes were normal. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) study for metaphases of fetal amniocytes revealed a cryptic translocation of chromosomes 8p and 22p. The fetal karyotype was described as 46,XY,8ps.ish t(8;22)(p23.3;p11.2) (D8S504-;D8S504+)dn. The parents decided to continue the pregnancy and a phenotypically normal boy was born at 38 weeks of gestation. In case of de novo terminal NORs detected prenatally, more accurate cytogenetic and molecular analysis should be performed in order to rule out cryptic chromosomal rearrangement among other chromosomes.

  • During the construction of circular underground pipe, the non-proper compaction along the pipe and the decrease of compaction efficiency have been the main problems to induce the failure of underground pipe or facility. The use of CLSM (controlled low strength materials) should be one of the possible applications to overcome those problems. In this research, the full-scaled field test and the numeric analysis using PENTAGON-3D FEM program were carried out for three different cases on the change of backfill materials, including the common sand, the soil from construction site, and the CLSM. From the full-scaled test in field, the use of in-situ CLSM as backfill materials reduced the vertical and lateral deformation of the pipe, as well as the deformation of the ground surface. The main reason for reducing the deformation would be the characteristics of the CLSM, especially self-leveling and self-hardening properties. The measured earth pressure at the surround of the corrugated pipe using the CLSM backfills was the smaller than the other cases, and the absolute value was almost zero. Judging from the full-scaled field test and FEM analysis, the use of CLSM as backfill materials should be one of the best choices reducing the failure of the underground pipes.

  • The applicability of soil washing/flushing to treat a contaminated soil with cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) using a mixture of organic/inorganic extractant was evaluated in laboratory-scale batch and column tests. Citric acid was the effective extractant to remove Cd and Cu from the soil among various organic acids except EDTA. Carbonic acid was chosen as inorganic extractant which was not only low toxicity to environment, but also increasing soil permeability. Moreover, the optimum ratio of organic and inorganic extractant to remove Cd and Cu was 10 : 1, and this ratio of organic and inorganic extractant achieved removal efficiencies of Cd (46%) and Cu (39%), respectively. The increasing flow rate of extractant could explain the phenomena of soil packing when carbonic acid was used with organic extractant (i.e. EDTA and citric acid). Therefore, a mixture of organic extractant with inorganic extractant, especially carbonic acid, could resolve a problem of soil packing when this extractant was applied to a field application to remove Cd and Cu using in-situ soil flushing process.
