  • The pressure is generally lower than that of the freestream at the base of a missile body due to the energy loss by the flow separation around the edge of the base. The base pressure changes in the presence of the thrust jet due to the interaction between the base flow of the missile and the jet flow. In this study, behavior of the missile base pressure by the change of the jet exit pressure and the freestream condition is investigated using the CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) method. Effects of the grid type and the freestream condition are tested. The results are compared with the semi-empirical predictions and the flight test data. The CFD results agree well with the flight test data. The semi-empirical predictions overestimate the base pressure when jet thrust is strong for low freestream speed.

  • An efficient tidal model, TIDE which is an iterative type, nonlinear finite element model has developed for the analysis of the tidal movement in the coastal area which is characterized by irregular boundaries and bottom topography. Traditional time domain finite element models have been in difficulties with requirement for high eddy viscosity coefficients and small time steps to insure numerical instability. These problems are overcome by operating in the frequency domain with an elaborate grid system by combining the triangular and quadrilateral shape grids. Furthermore, in order to handle non-linearity which will be more significant in the shallow region, an iterative scheme with least square error minimization algorithm has been implemented in the model. The results of TIDE model are agreed with the analytical solutions in a rectangular channel under the condition of tidal waves entering the channel closed at one end.

  • Ice accretion on the solid surface is an importance factor in assessing the performance of aircraft and wind turbine blade. Changes in the external shape due to ice accretion can greatly deteriorate the aerodynamic performance. In this study, a three-dimensional upwind-type second-order positivity-preserving finite volume CFD scheme based on the unstructured mesh topology is developed to simulate two-phase flow in atmospheric icing condition. The code is then validated by comparing with NASA IRT experimental data on the sphere. The present results of the collection efficiency are found to be in close agreement with experimental data and show improvement near the stagnation region.

  • Flow and aerodynamic characteristics were analyzed numerically for a commercial passenger airplane, Boeing 747-400, flying in the cruising condition. The model geometry with 100:1 in scale was obtained by the photo scanning measurement with the maximum error of 1.4% comparing with the real airplane dimension. The three-dimensional inviscid steady compressible governing equations were solved by the finite volume method in the unstructured grid system. The convective terms were treated by the Crank-Nicholson and first-order upwind schemes. In the computational results, the strong wing-tip vortices were clearly observed and the pressure contours on the airplane surface were suggested. The lift and drag forces in the wing with engines increase by 1.49% and 3.9%, respectively compared with the case without engines. The aerodynamic forces were estimated quantitatively for each element which consists of the airplane.

  • A battery is the device that transforms the chemical energy into the direct-current electrical energy directly without a mechanical process. Unit cells are connected in series to obtain the necessary voltage, while being connected in parallel to organize capacity for load current and to decrease the internal resistance for corresponding the sudden shift of the load current. The circular-current, however, could be occurred when the system is driven in parallel. As a result, the new batteries are heated by over-change and discharge, and the over charge current makes to increase the rust of the positive grid and consequently the shortened life of the new batteris would be shown. In this paper, the internal resistance of charge and discharge will be balanced, through inserting the resistance into the system by way of calculation of the changed amount of internal resistance.

  • Wind farm interconnected with grid can supply the power into a power network not only the normal conditions, but also the fault conditions of distribution network. If the fault happened in the distribution power line with wind fm, the fault current level measured in a relaying point might be lower than that of distribution network without wind turbine generator due to the contribution of wind farm. Consequently, it may be difficult to detect the fault happened in the distribution network connected with wind generator This paper describes the effect of the interconnected wind turbine generators on protective relaying of distribution power lines and detection of the fault occurred in a power line network. Simulation results shows that the current level of fault happened in the power line with wind farm depends on the fault impedance, the fault location. the output of wind farm. and the load condition of distribution network.

  • A virtual reality technology for multipurpose numerical simulation is developed to reproduce and investigate a variety of ocean environmental problems in a 3D-Numerical Wave Tank. The governing equations for solving incompressible fluid motion are Navier-Stokes equation and continuity equation, and the Marker-Density function technique is adopted to implement the fully-nonlinear free-surface kinematic condition. The marine environmental situations, i.e. waves, currents, wind, etc., are reproduced by use of multi-segmented wavemaker on the basis of the so-called "snake-principle". In this paper, some numerical reproduction techniques for regular and irregular waves, multi-directional waves, Bull's-eye wave, wave-current, and solitary wave are presented, and a model test in motion with large amplitude of roll angle is conducted in the developed 3D-NWT, using a overlaid grid system.

  • The ship wave phenomena in the restricted waterway were investigated by a numerical analysis. The Euler and continuity equations were employed for the present study. The boundary fitted and moving grid system was adopted to enhance the computational efficiency. The convective terms in the governing equations and the kinematic free surface boundary condition were solved by the Constrained Interpolated Profile (CIP) algorithm in order to solve accurately wave heights in far field as well as near field. The advantage of the CIP method was verified by the comparison of the computed results by the CIP and the Maker and Cell (MAC) method. The free surface flow simulation around Wigley hull was performed and compared with the experiment for the sake of the validation of the numerical method. The present numerical scheme was applied to the free surface simulation for various canal sections in order to understand the effect of the sectional shape of waterways on the ship waves. The wave heights on the side wall and the shape of the wave patterns with their characteristics of flow are discussed.

  • This study is to develop a grid-based daily runoff model considering seasonal vegetation canopy condition. The model simulates the temporal and spatial variation of runoff components (surface, interflow, and baseflow), evapotranspiration (ET) and soil moisture contents of each grid element. The model is composed of three main modules of runoff, ET, and soil moisture. The total runoff was simulated by using soil water storage capacity of the day, and was allocated by introducing recession curves of each runoff component. The ET was calculated by Penman-Monteith method considering MODIS leaf area index (LAI). The daily soil moisture was routed by soil water balance equation. The model was evaluated for 930 $km^2$ Yongdam watershed. The model uses 1 km spatial data on landuse, soil, boundary, MODIS LAI. The daily weather data was built using IDW method (2000-2008). Model calibration was carried out to compare with the observed streamflow at the watershed outlet. The Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency was 0.78~0.93. The watershed soil moisture was sensitive to precipitation and soil texture, consequently affected the streamflow, and the evapotranspiration responded to landuse type.
