The tap water is generally known to be corrosive in the pH range at 6.5 ~ 7.5. And the degree of corrosion varies depending on the types of raw water such as river surface water or lake water of the dam. Although several corrosion index represents the corrosivity of tap water, the typical corrosion indexes such as Langelier saturation index (LI) and calcium carbonate precipitation potential (CCPP) were calculated to monitoring the corrosive water quality about raw and tap water in water distribution system. To control the corrosive water quality, the correlation between corrosion index and water quality factors were examined. In this study, corrosion index (LI, CCPP) and the pH was found to be most highly correlated.
The purpose of this work is to investigate the water quality change characteristics of treated water in water distribution systems of Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) of Jeju City. For this, the raw water, treated water and tap water that did not pass (named as not pass-tap water) and passed through the water storage tank (named as pass-tap water) were sampled and analyzed monthly from September 2001 to August 2002, for four (W, S, B and O) WTPs except for D WTP (where treated water is not supplied continuously) among WTPs of Jeju City. The concentrations of $NO_3^-$ and $Cl^-$ of treated water in distribution systems changed little, but changed seasonally, which is considered to be based on the seasonal variation of the quality of raw water. The pH of treated water changed little in distribution systems for S WTP, but for the other WTPs, the pH of not pass-tap water was similar to that of treated water and the pH of pass-tap water was higher than that of treated water. The turbidity of treated water in distribution systems changed little except for W2 of W WTP and S4 and S5 of S WTP, where it was higher than that of each treated water. The residual chlorine concentrations between treated water and not pass-tap water changed little, but those between treated water and pass-tap water changed greatly, based on the its long residence time in water storage tank and so its reaction with organic matter, etc or its evaporation. The concentrations of TTHMs (total trihalomethanes) and $CHCl_3$ that induce cancers in water distribution systems of these WTPs, were much lower than their water quality criteria and those in other cities. The concentrations of TTHMs of treated water and not pass-tap water were similar, but concentrations of pass-tap water were 1.5 to 2.0 times higher than those of treated water and not pass-tap water, due to the reaction of residual chlorine and organic matter, etc, with the result of long residence time in water storage tank.

Oceanographic observation and qualitative analysis for deep ocean water in the East Sea were carried out from January 2003 to January 2004, in order to understand the characteristics of deep sea water in the East Sea. Temporal and spatial variation of water masses were discussed from survey of the study area including the coastal sea of Kwangwon province in where the polar front mixing cold and warm water masses were formed. On the basis of the vertical profiles of temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen, water masses in the study area were divided into 5 major groups; (1) Low Saline Surface Water (LSSW) (2) Tsushima Surface water (TSW) (3) Tsushima Middle Water (TMW) (4) North Korea Cold Water (NKCW) and (5) East Sea Proper Water (ESPW). In winter, surface water in coastal sea of Kwangwaan Kosung region were dominated by North Korean Cold Water (NKCW). As Tsushima warm current were enforced in summer, various water masses were vertically emerged in study area, in order of TSW, TMW, NKCW and ESPW. It is highly possible that the LSSW which occurred at surface water of september is originated from influx of fresh water due to the seasonal rainy spell. Nevertheless water masses existed within surface water were seasonally varied, water quality characteristics of East Sea Proper Water (ESPW) under 300 m did not changed all the seasons of the year.
In existing systems, the best method inhibiting corrosion control in water distribution systems is to reduce water corrosiveness. Water corrosion can be decreased by controlling water quality through simple water treatment in treatment plants. On this research, we study the characteristics of tab water qualities in domestic areas, assessment of corrosive water quality and the method of water quality monitoring. This review presents the method of water quality monitoring which is the most applicable. Monitoring for corrosion control in waterworks system is the most proper method; It can prevent serious accidents economically and reduce civil appeals. Surely we should assess corrosive water quality in tab water, and introduce water treatment methods to control corrosive water quality before monitoring for corrosion. According to a lot of researches, it has been proved that simple water treatments can reduce the pipe corrosion. In this review we should indicate that we do not control of the corrosive water quality due to domestic conditions, we should monitor the water quality basically. Therefore, we recognize how the existing water quality can cause problems on pipeline corrosion, how to deal with it. Then it will be possible to apply water quality monitoring for corrosion control in water distribution system. Monitoring for corrosion control can be expressed by LI index, it is already known in literatures. This review presents more simple method than existing methods than existing ones we expect to apply these methods to SCADA in the future.

Nutrients were investigated for surface water, bottom sediment and ground water in a rural watershed from January 2006 to March 2007. The concentrations of TN and $NO_3-N$ in ground water were higher than those in surface water due to fertilization on cabbage upland neighboring a river during March to August, but lower than those in surface water during September to February. However, the concentrations TP and $PO_4-P$ in ground water were lower than those in surface water. The concentrations of TP and $PO_4-P$ in surface water was lower than those in bottom sediment. The TP concentration in the bottom greatly decreased during rainy season. due to flush sediment of bottom, and then gradually increased.
Water discolouration and increased turbidity in the local water service distribution network occurred from hydraulic incidents such as drastic changes of flow and pressure at large consumer. Hydraulic incidents impose extra shear stresses on sediment layers in the network, leading to particle resuspension. Therefore, real time measuring instruments were installed for monitoring the variation of water flow, pressure, turbidity and particulates on a hydrant in front of the inlet point of large apartment complex. In this study, it is attempted to establish a more stable water supply plan and to reduce complaints from customers about water quality in a district metering area. To reduce red or black water, the water flow monitoring and control systems are desperately needed in the point of the larger consumers.
Recently, drinking water quality has significantly improved with the progress of water treatment technologies, however, customer's trust on tap water is still relatively low. Low trust on water quality is mainly due to vague anxiety. Therefore, to improve customer's trust on drinking water quality new strategy such as water safety plan(WSP) which recommended by WHO and IWA should be introduced. WSP can be defined as an approach which uses comprehensive risk assessment and risk management approach that encompasses all steps in water supply from catchment to consumer to ensure the safety of a drinking water supply. In this study, cases on WSP introduction in other countries as well as strategy for the introduction of WSP in Korea were investigated. In addition, recommendations on the improvement of the current water contamination response manual was suggested based on the analysis of the existing manual at a full scale water treatment plant.

In this study we developed a turbidity management system to support the operation for effective turbid water management. The decision-making system includes various models for prediction of turbid water inflow, effective reservoir operation using the selective withdrawal facility, analysis of turbid water discharge in the downstream. The system is supported by the intensive monitoring devices installed in the upstream rivers, reservoirs, and downstream rivers. SWAT and HSPF models were constructed to predict turbid water flows in the Imha and Andong catchments. CE-QUAL-W2 models were constructed for turbid water behavior prediction, and various analyses were conducted to examine the effects of the selective withdrawal operation for efficient high turbid water discharge, turbid water distribution under differing amount and locations of turbid water discharge. A 1-dimensional dynamic water quality model was built using Ko-Riv1 for simulation of turbidity propagation in the downstream of the reservoirs, and 2-dimensional models were developed to investigate the mixing phenomena of two waters discharged from the Andong and Imha reservoirs with different temperature and turbidity conditions during joint dam operation for reducing the impacts of turbid water.
The aims of this study are to enhance the students' knowledge of the drinking water and its reliability by investigating drinking water situation on the drinking water. The results are as following 1. Status and drinking behavior about school drinking water (1) 97.82% of the schools are using the tap water as the resource of drinking water. (2) 46 schools are in possession of water tank and 18 schools of them are using the water tank as the resource of drinking water. The clearing and sanitization of the tank are carried out once in a year with hypochloronatrium by the low-level officials. (3) 51.28% of the schools are providing the students with drinking water and 75% of them with boiled water. The drinking water supply managers are low-level officials, nurse teachers, and dietitian. 2. Analysis of the drinking water quality (1) Most of the drinking water provided by the school are tap water 35.8%, barely tea 5.85%, filtered water 6.3%, ground water 1.1% and all turned out to be suitable for drinking. (2) The drinking water carried from home turned out to be unsuitable for drinking except pH criterion, especially the test of APC(Aerobic Plate Count) and Coliform group showed worse degree. These results were caused by the hygiene problem and maltreatment in water container.

Estuary barrier is a hydraulic structure constructed to supply safely water as protecting chlorine penetration of sea water. However, the barrier brings about a problem which decreases original functions of estuary because hydraulic ecology was disrupted as obstructing natural water exchange between fresh water and sea water. It is important to supply Enough fresh water in the estuary ecosystem. But it is possible to reduce the problems brought from barrier throughout efficient water gate operation of estuary barrier. It was shown in this study that the environmental effect of estuary in Nakdong river was investigated according to the control of water level. Also, the basic information about the effective water gate operation was provided. The analysis results showed that the release rate of estuary was increased about 20% as changing the operational water levels. This helps supplying fresh water durably to the mixing zone. Also, CE-QUAL-W2 model was utilized to assess water quality. The values of BOD and COD were not changed in estuary area. From the result, it was analyzed the effect of water quality according to the water gate operation was not indicated.
