We have measured and analyzed the dark data of two PICNIC IR arrays (P574 and P560) obtained through the Cosmic Infrared Background ExpeRiment (CIBER). First, we identified three types of bad pixels: the cold, the hot, and the transient, which are figured in total as 0.06% for P574 and 0.19% for P560. Then, after the bad pixels were masked, we determined the dark noise to be 20.5 ${\pm}$ 0.05 $e^-$ and 16.1 ${\pm}$ 0.05 $e^-$, and the dark current to be 0.6 ${\pm}$ 0.05 $e^-$/sec and 0.7 ${\pm}$ 0.05 $e^-$/sec for P574 and P560, respectively. Finally, we discussed glitches and readout modes for a future mission.

The geostationary satellite COMS is going to be launched in 2010, and, in the series of test, there are some high-pressure tests concerning the vessel tank filled with helium gas of hundreds atmospheric pressure. In this paper, authors evaluates risk associated with accidental rupture of the test system. Two possible scenarios are considered: 1) the 310-bar helium tank ruptures at the center of the acoustic chamber, and 2) the 116-bar reduced-pressure helium tank ruptures in the test room shielded by bullet-proof glasses. Using the theory of blast wave propagation and computational simulation, the dynamics of wave reflected in a confined space is investigated for highly complex unsteady flow physics.

This study predicts the basic characteristics of combustion instabilities in a gas turbine lean premixed combustor using ASCI3D code which is a FEM(Finite Element Method)-based Helmholtz solver. The prediction results show the good agreement with the measured data in modeling the overall combustion instability features, however, the code is found to overpredict the unstable conditions. As one of the efforts to improve the model accuracy, the effects of acoustic boundary conditions on the instability growth rate are analyzed. As a result, it is shown that the acoustic reflection coefficient has a great impact on the instability and the prediction accuracy can be enhanced by defining the precise acoustic conditions.

Basic experiments were carried out using the THT-IV low-power Hall thruster to examine the influences of magnetic field shape and strength, and acceleration channel length on thruster performance and to establish guidelines for design of high-performance Hall thrusters. Thrusts were measured with varying magnetic field and channel structure. Exhaust plasma diagnostic measurement was also made to evaluate plume divergent angles and voltage utilization efficiencies. Ion current spatial profiles were measured with a Faraday cup, and ion energy distribution functions were estimated from data with a retarding potential analyzer. The thruster was stably operated with a highest performance under an optimum acceleration channel length of 20 mm and an optimum magnetic field with a maximum strength of about 150 Gauss near the channel exit and with some shape considering ion acceleration directions. Accordingly, an optimum magnetic field and channel structure is considered to exist under an operational condition, related to inner physical phenomena of plasma production, ion acceleration and exhaust plasma feature. A new Hall thruster was designed with basic research data of the THT-IV thruster. With the thruster with many considerations, long stable operations were achieved. In all experiments at 200-400 V with 1.5-3 mg/s, the thrust and the specific impulse ranged from 15 to 70 mN and from 1100 to 2300 see, respectively, in a low electric power range of 300~1300 W. The thrust efficiency reached 55 %. Hence, a large map of the thruster performance was successfully made. The thermal characteristics were also examined with data of both measured and calculated temperatures in the thruster body. Thermally safe conditions were achieved with all input powers.

The shock tunnel as a hypersonic ground test facility was designed, constructed and its performance test was conducted to reproduce the high speed flow which the hypersonic propulsion system is encountered. The design points were understood and the conceptual design was completed using the quasi one dimensional operation analysis code. After that, the specific performance and compartment design were completed using CFD simulation as the part analysis. The facility was then constructed according to those design results and the performance test was conducted for various operation conditions. In this paper, we suggested the design method of hypersonic shock tunnel including the conceptual and performance design using theoretical analysis and the quasi 1D Multi-species computational fluid dynamics code.

A pneumatic driving solenoid valve operates pneumatic control devices by opening/closing operating flow passage when the command is given by control system for the liquid-propellant feeding system of space launch vehicle. The simulation model of pneumatic driving solenoid valve is designed with AMESim to verify the designs and evaluate the dynamic characteristics and pneumatic behaviors of valve. To validate a valve simulation model, the simulation results of their operating durations of valve by AMESim analysis are compared with the results of experiments. In addition, the results of internal flow simulation with FLUENT are utilized to improve the accuracy of valve-modeling. Using the model, we analyze performance of valve; opening/closing pressure, operating time on various design factors; shape of control valve seat, drainage seat, rate of sealing diameter, volume of control cavity. This study will serve as one of reference guides to enhance the developmental efficiency of ventilation-relief valves with the various operating conditions, which shall be used in Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II.

A ventilation-relief valve performs as a safety-valve assembly for the liquid-propellant feeding system of space launch vehicle. This valve plays a role of relieving the vaporized propellants from propellant tanks during the filling and storing stages of propellants. Also it regulates to maintain the pressure of ullage volume of on-board propellant tanks within the safety-margin during the flight. The simulation model of ventilation-relief valve is designed with AMESim to predict and evaluate the dynamic characteristics and pneumatic behaviors of valve. To validate a valve simulation model, the simulation results of the opening and closing pressures and their operating durations of valve by AMESim analysis are compared with the results of mathematical methods. In addition, the results of internal flow simulation with FLUENT are utilized to improve the accuracy of valve-modeling. An accurate thrust measurement is one of the critical paths to the successful test and evaluation program of small liquid propulsion engines. This study describes the design factors for the development of thrust measurement system (TMS) as well as manufacturing practice of TMS hardware. We investigate characteristics of the TMS and its performance through hot-firing test of small liquid engine in a vacuum test cell which is capable of simulating 100,000 ft of altitude or higher. For performance test of TMS, we measure thrusts by changing propellant injection pressure at steady state firing mode as well as at pulse firing mode. Measured eigen frequency of the TMS is 67 Hz. Linearity test of the TMS shows good performance with less than 0.5% of linearity error.

In this paper the laminate design parameters are researched to maximize the performance index of a composite pressure vessel. The pressure-resistant performance and the light-weight concept with contained internal space are implied in the performance index. To maximize the performance index, the three design variables that the thickness of each of helical and hoop layers and the length of hoop layer are considered under the assumption of fixed internal space. To optimize the variables, the response surface method is introduced for construction of the surrogate model and the ANOVA(analysis of variance) is performed to evaluate the effects of the variables. The optimization problem is formulated to maximize performance index under the burst pressure constraint. To verify the effectiveness of the research, numerical analyses are performed for the optimum model.

The 200 W electrically powered unmanned aerial vehicle, which is studied in this research, uses solar cells, a fuel cell and batteries as the main power source simultaneously. The output of each power source performs power control for each power source by the active power control method so that an adequate capacity of the battery could be maintained while limiting the maximum output of the fuel cell. The output variation for each power source under the active power control method was identified through an integrated ground test. In addition, the effect of limiting the maximum output of the fuel cell on the output variation of the entire system was experimentally identified, and it was confirmed that the adequate maximum output value of the fuel cell for preventing the overdischarge of six series-connected, small size batteries for fuel cell systems is 150 W.
