  • Background: The aim of this study was to clarify the role of spinal groups II and III metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) with respect to postoperative pain at the spinal level. In addition, the nature of the pharmacological interaction between groups II and III mGluRs agonists and morphine was determined. Methods: Catheters were inserted into the intrathecal space of male SD rats. To induce postoperative pain, an incision was made in the plantar surface of the hind paw. A pharmacological characteristic for the interaction between groups II and III mGluRs agonists and morphine was evaluated using a fixed-dose analysis. Results: None of intrathecal group II and III mGluRs agonists modified the withdrawal threshold of the incisional pain. The administration of intrathecal morphine resulted in an increase of a dose dependent withdrawal threshold. A fixed-dose analysis revealed that the group III mGluRs agonist, ACPT-III, increased the antinociceptive action of morphine, while the group II mGluRs agonist, APDC, had no effect the antinociception of morphine. Conclusions: These results suggest that group II and III mGluRs may not play a direct modulatory role in the processing of postoperative pain at the spinal level. However, agonizing group III mGluRs may indirectly contributable to the potentiation of morphines antinociception in the spinal cord. Thus, the combination of morphine and a group III mGluRs agonist may be useful in the management of spinal postoperative pain.

  • IPPT(Integrated Propulsion Performance Test)s were carried out as a final stage of KSR-III(Korea Sounding Rocket-III) propulsion system development three kinds of engine with different injector faceplate were tested, therefore a engine with composite baffle was certified for a KSR-III launcher. Though a engine with STS baffle which was designed for verification of combustion instability suppression ability was not final design, due to the combustion tests with this engine, it can be described that baffle has capability to suppress combustion instability at ignition and at mainstage in the case of KSR-III combustor.

  • This study aimed to prepare a W/O nonionic microemulsion system(MEs) consisting of OP-4[polyoxyethylene(4) nonylphenol], OP-7[polyoxyethylene(7) nonylphenol], 1-hexanol, D2EHPA, kerosene and HCl solution and applied to the extraction of La(III) from chloride aqueous solution within the polysulfone hollow fiber contactor (HFC),laboratory-scale experiments were carried out to investigate the recovery of La(III) using as-prepared microemulsion from the simulation wastewater containing La(III),Al(III) and Fe(III). The right weight ratio(Rs) of OP-4 to OP-7 was firstly confirmed through determination of the solubilization capacity of HCl solution(W0,HCl) in microemulsion, the effect of several factors such as the HCl concentration, temperature and effective extraction time on the extraction efficiency of La(III) was discussed. Results showed that the acceptable Rs was 4:6 to prepare the W/O MEs. The extraction yield of La(III) increased with the increasing of HCl concentration, temperature and effective extraction time and reaches to 97.3% while using five-stage modules. The recovery yield of La(III) from simulation La-bearing wastewater was 90.6%.

  • Spectrophotometric determination of some light lanthanide ions by flow injection method is described. Chromeazurol S forms water soluble complex with lanthanide ions in the presence of DTAB. The absorption maximum of the complexes are from 650 nm to 655 nm and the molar absorptivities were ca. $1.8{\times}10^5\;L mol^{-1}cm^{-1}$ on Tris buffer (pH 10.5). The calibration curves for Nd(III), Eu(III) and Sm(III) obtained by FIA are over the range of 0.1 to 0.6 ppm and the correlation coefficient were ca. 0.9993. The detection limits (S/N) were from 10 ppb for Nd(III) and Eu(III) to 20 ppb for Sm(III). The relative standard deviations was ${\pm}$.2% for 0.4 ppm sample. The samples throughput was ca. $50\;cm^{-1}$.

  • An atomistic-based finite bond element model for predicting the tearing mode (mode III) fracture of a single-layer graphene sheet (SLGS) is developed. The model uses the modified Morse potential for predicting the maximum strain relationship of graphene sheets. The mode III fracture of graphene under out-of-plane shear loading is investigated with extensive molecular mechanics simulations. Molecular mechanics is used for describing the displacements of atoms in the area near a crack tip, and linear elastic fracture mechanics is used outside this area. This work shows that the molecular mechanics method can provide a reliable and yet simple method for determining not only the shear properties of SLGS but also its mode III fracture toughness in the armchair and the zigzag directions; the determined mode III fracture toughness values of SLGS are $0.86MPa{\sqrt{m}}$ and $0.93MPa{\sqrt{m}}$, respectively.

  • The yeast extract, coconut water, safflower seed oil, arachidonic acid, linolenic acid, jasmonic acid and methyl jasmonate were added to Gamborg's B$_{5}$ medium. The changes on productivity of baccatin III were estimated every 30 minutes and the results were compared using the selected high yielding cell culture system of Taxus cuspidata. In most cases, the peaks of baccatin III productivity occured at 90~120 min after addition of elicitors. Among the compound elicitors, safflower seed oil showed the highest productivity of baccatin III. Also arachidonic acid and linolenic acid increased the baccatin III production.

  • In this study, DNA-templated copper nanoclusters (DNA-CuNCs) were used to detect exonuclease III (Exo III) activity, which is important for the diagnosis and therapy of several diseases. The results of this study showed that Exo III was affected by the concentrations of magnesium ions and sodium ions, and its optimal conditions for cleavage were $5mM\;Mg^{2+}$ and less than $25mM\;Na^+$. With a blunt-end DNA, more than 98% of DNA was digested by Exo III. As expected, with two or four cytosines in the terminal position of a 4-base overhanging DNA such as 5'-GGCC-3' and 5'-CCCC-3', there was little cleavage by Exo III compared with a blunt-end DNA.

  • A cDNA encoding a putative alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) class III was cloned from the silkworm, Bombyx mono The full length cDNA is 1,385 nucleotides long and contains an open reading frame of 1,128 bp encoding 376 amino acid residues. The B. mon ADH III protein sequence was aligned with ADH III known from various organisms. Interestingly, the protein sequence of B. mon ADH III showed 87% and 85% identity to ADH III from marine fish Sparus aurata and Branchiostoma floridae, respectively, whereas rather low sequence identity (83%) to Drosophila melanogaster ADH III was observed. Northern blot analysis revealed that B. mon ADH III mRNA is expressed in all tissues from larva examined: fat body, midgut, epidermis, silk gland and ovary, with the highest level found in the fat body.

  • Two molecular species of apolipophorin-III (spoLp-III) were purified from the last instar larval hemolymph of Galleria mellonella by gel permeation chromatography (Sephadex G-100), ion exchange chromatography (DE-52), heat treatment (90C for 30 min) and Mono S FPLC, and were named apoLp-III-a and apoLp-lll-b, respectively. They were indistinguishable by SDS-PAGE but could be separated by native PAGE. The molecular mass of apoLp-III determined by SDS-PAGE was approximately 18 kDa. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of apoLp-III-b revealed high similarities with the apoLp-III from Manduca sexta.
