The problem of urban climate change and destruction of wildlife habitats space which is becoming more serious day by day, has to do with the impervious area(surface area) in urban space. The destruction of natural ground and indiscreet soil covering due to compact development is causing urban desertification in urban residential areas. With biotops area ratio being variously used and extended as a pre planning index, this study aims to analyze the elements of biotop area ratio that need to be supplemented in order to emerge as a realistic planning index for post evaluation measure and not act only as a examining tool in the planning stage. In particular, this study aims to examine the possibility of biotops area ratio to be used as a system to evaluate the outer space of apartment housings, in which biotops area ratio is most actively used, as a tool to secure ecological soundness of the development area after construction is finished.
To identify the influential factors and their relative significance on spatial distribution of $NO_3-N$ in urban ground water, spatial analysis was conducted using GIS and statistical approaches in the Seongnae-Koduk watersheds, where rapid urbanization has been proceeded. Several factors were considered including land-use type, distance to sewage lines, the ratio of impervious surface, and the ratio of green area. The spatial distribution of $NO_3-N$ in the land-use types shows differences between urban and crop field possibly due to the sewage networks in urban areas and the agrochemical uses in crop field. Nitrate concentrations in ground water were decreased with the distance to sewage lines to approximately 60-75 m. Concentrations of nitrate and distances to sewage lines showed negative correlation, indicating that the nitrate contamination was induced from the sewage system and specially significant in urban areas. The negative correlation of the ratio of impervious surface to the nitrate concentration in urban areas also suggested that the source materials of nitrate are introduced from the surface. Consequently, in areas of urbanization processes, systematic management of past-and-present land-use types and sewage systems are the most significant factors in preventing ground water from nitrate contamination.

In order to respond to the increase in water disasters due to climate change and urbanization, research on low impact development (LID) techniques and application to cities are expanding. The LID technique is a technology that reduces rainwater runoff in the city, controls various water disasters such as flash floods, etc. in an eco-friendly way, and restores the urban water circulation system to a natural water circulation system. However, quantitative analysis of stormwater runoff reduction through the LID technique is insufficient. Therefore, this study analyzed the ratio of the permeable area required to reduce the surface runoff of rainfall (25 mm/hr, 50 mm/hr, 100 mm/hr) with respect to the impervious watershed area of the old city using the permeable pavement. As a result of the analysis, it was found that a permeable area ratio of 7.14 to 12.63% of the total area was required for 25 mm/hr, 15.79 to 26.97% for 50 mm/hr, and 30 to 55.81% for 100 mm/hr.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate flooding vulnerability considering spatial characteristics focused on Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. Assessment Factors are water cycle area ratio, surface runoff, and precipitation. And construction of assessment factors and vulnerability was analyzed by GIS program. Water cycle ratio and surface runoff were vulnerable in urban area. Precipitation was often distributed in agriculture of the northern region. Results of flooding vulnerability were low in agriculture and forest of the northern region. In contrast, urban area was high because there has covered impervious land cover. Analytical results of flooding vulnerability density using hotspot spatial cluster analysis were high in urban area. And these areas were situated in down stream so flooding were generated. Therefore, flooding vulnerability assessment of this study can help for selecting construction sites of pervious land cover and rainwater management facilities in urban and environmental planning.

A wind tunnel experiment was performed with the design wind speed of 50m/s to investigate the wind forces of Ieodo Ocean Research Station. The structure portion above water surface was modelled with 1/80 scale ratio. The wind force coefficients were determined from the force signals and compared to the results of a numerical study which was separately undertaken. Those results generally agreed well, and it is assured that the experimental data can be effectively used in the wind resistant design of the structure. Making use of the experimental force and pressure coefficients, the wind farce and moments acting on the overall upper structure of prototype are determined together with the wind pressures on local impervious facilities (main deck, solar panel and helideck).

Purpose: There is a growing interest in rainwater runoff reduction effect of green roof, as flooding caused by increasing impervious surface is becoming more and more frequent in urban areas. This study was conducted to prove runoff reduction and runoff delay effect of the retentive green roof and to investigate its influencing factors to the rainfall events that occurred in the summer of 2013. Method: The experiment intended to monitor the runoff quantity of the retentive green roof($140m^2$) and normal roof($100m^2$) in #35 building in Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea for 75 days in 2013. Result: On analysis of 9 rainfall events, it showed that the retentive green roof has 24.8~100% of runoff reduction ratio, 21.2~100% of peak flow reduction ratio, 0.5~3.75 hours of peak delay, and $1.8{\sim}7.2m^3$ of retaining capacity in an area of $140m^2$. It shows different results depending on rainfall and antecedent dry days. The results show that runoff reduction effect is effective when the rainfall is less than 50 mm and antecedent dry day is longer than five days on average. By installing retentive green roofs on buildings, it can help mitigate urban floods and rehabilitate urban water cycle.
On the urban scale, Micro-climate analysis models for urban scale have been developed to investigate the atmospheric characteristics in urban surface in detail and to predict the micro-climate change due to the changes in urban structure. BioCAS (Biometeorological Climate Impact Assessment System) is a system that combines such analysis models and has been implemented internally in the Korea Meteorological Administration. One of role in this system is the analysis of the health impact by heat waves in urban area. In this study, the vegetation cooling models A and B were developed and linked with BioCAS and evaluated by the temperature drop at the vegetation areas during ten selected heat-wave days. Smaller prediction errors were found as a result of applying the vegetation cooling models to the heat-wave days. In addition, it was found that the effects of the vegetation cooling models produced different results according to the distribution of vegetation area in land cover near each observation site - the improvement of the model performance on temperature analysis was different according to land use at each location. The model A was better fitted where the surrounding vegetation ratio was 50% or more, whereas the model B was better where the vegetation ratio was less than 50% (higher building and impervious areas). Through this study, it should be possible to select an appropriate vegetation cooling model according to its fraction coverage so that the temperature analysis around built-up areas would be improved.
Identifying the water circulation status is one of the indispensable processes for watershed management in an urban area. Recently, various water circulation models have been developed to simulate the water circulation, but it takes a lot of time and cost to make a water circulation model that could adapt the characteristics of the watershed. This paper aims to develop a water circulation state estimation model that could easily calculate the status of water circulation in an urban watershed by using multiple linear regression analysis. The study watershed is a watershed in Seoul that applied the impermeable area ratio in 1962 and 2000. And, It was divided into 73 watersheds in order to consider changes in water circulation status according to the urban characteristic factors. The input data of the SHER(Similar Hydrologic Element Response) model, a water circulation model, were used as data for the urban characteristic factors of each watershed. A total of seven factors were considered as urban characteristic factors. Those factors included annual precipitation, watershed area, average land-surface slope, impervious surface ratio, coefficient of saturated permeability, hydraulic gradient of groundwater surface, and length of contact line with downstream block. With significance probabilities (or p-values) of 0.05 and below, all five models showed significant results in estimating the water circulation status such as the surface runoff rate and the evapotranspiration rate. The model that was applied all seven urban characteristics factors, can calculate the most similar results such as the existing water circulation model. The water circulation estimation model developed in this study is not only useful to simply estimate the water circulation status of ungauged watersheds but can also provide data for parameter calibration and validation.

Urban development and densification have led to the Urban Heat Island Effect, in which the temperature of urban space is higher than the surrounding areas, and the intensity is increasing with climate change. In addition, when the city's air temperature rises in summer, low-income, elderly population, and socially vulnerable people who have health problems lack the ability to cope with the elevated heat environment. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the urban heat island area of Seoul through Hotspot analysis, which is a spatial statistics technique, and explored physical environments, demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of urban heat island effect areas using logistic regression models. This study performed urban heat island hotspot analysis using the average air temperatures of the 423 administrative dongs in Seoul. Analysis results identified that the urban heat islands were concentrated in Jung-gu, Jongno-gu, Yongsan-gu, and Yeongdeungpo-gu. Logistic regression analysis results indicated that urban heat island areas of Seoul were affected by residential floor area ratio, commercial facility floor area ratio, overall floor area ratio, impervious surface ratio, and normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI). In addition, as a result of analyzing the vulnerable area of thermal environment considering the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the heat island area, urban heat island areas of Seoul were significantly associated with the proportion of low-income elderly living alone. The result of this study provided useful insights for urban thermal environmental design and policy development that could improve the thermal environment for the socially disadvantaged urban population.
