Flows were measured in an unshrouded centrifugal impeller. By using a single slanted hot-wire probe and a Kiel probe mounted on the impeller hub disk, the 3-D relative velocities and the rotary stagnation pressures were measured in seven circumferential planes between the inlet and outlet of the impeller rotating at 700 rpm, which diameter is 0.39 meter, and the static pressures and the slip factor at the impeller outlet were estimated from the measured values. Measurements were made for three flow rates corresponding to zero incidence and two others with the greater and the smaller one than zero. From the measured data in these flow rates, the followings were investigated in the impeller passage, the variation of the primary and secondary flows, the leakage flows, the wake's position and its size, the static pressure rise and the loss production mechanism. Furthermore the static pressure and the slip factor were compared with the results of inviscid Quasi-3D calculation.
Off-design experimental performance was investigated for a small centrifugal compressor, whose impeller diameter is about 125mm, used in an industrial gas turbine. Test rig was designed and manufactured with a radial inflow turbine and a combustor to supply driving power to the compressor. Static pressure was measured on the casing of the impeller, vaneless diffuser, vaned diffuser and volute. Total pressure was obtained using specially fabricated rakes at the vaned diffuser throat and exit. Circumferential nonuniformity was found, near surge, in the Impeller, vaned diffuser and volute region. Spanwise nonuniform flow from the impeller affected the total pressure defects in the vaned diffuser region. Static pressure distortion in the circumferential direction in the volute was found near surge, where the minimum occurred near 140 degree position.
A coolant pump is the device that cools processed articles and tools when using cutting, boring, and grinding machine tools and provides cutting oil for distributing or cleansing the cut chip to the worktable, processing position, etc. In particular, it consumes a large proportion of energy in machine tools, so it plays an important role in terms of energy efficiency. The purpose of this research is to optimize the shape of impeller, which directly affects performance improvements, to determine the capacity of the coolant pump. To do so, we carried out a parametric analysis with the geometric shape of the impeller as the input variable.
Two-dimensional, angle-resolved LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimetry) measurements of the turbulent rotating flow field in a confined cylinder have been performed. The configurations of interest are flows between a rotating upper disk with a rod attached by a disk or impeller($\theta$ = 45$^{\circ}$, 90$^{\circ}$) and a stationary lower disk in a confined cylinder. The mean flow velocity as well as the turbulent intensity of the flow field have been measured. The results show that the flow is strongly dependent on the position of the impellers or the disk, negligibly affected by the Reynolds number in turbulent flow. It is observed that the mixing effect of the axial flow impeller($\theta$ = 45$^{\circ}$) is better than that of the radial flow impeller($\theta$ = 90$^{\circ}$) or a disk.

To optimize the stationary components in the multistage centrifugal pump, the effects of the return vane profile on the performances of the multistage centrifugal pump were investigated experimentally, taking account of the inlet flow conditions for the next stage impeller. The return vane, whose trailing edge is set at the outer wall position of the annular channel downstream of the vane and which discharges the swirl-less flow, gives better pump performances. By equipping such return vane with the swirl stop set from the trailing edge to the main shaft position, the unstable head characteristics can be also suppressed successfully at the lower discharge. Taking the pump performances and the flow conditions into account, the impeller blade was modified so as to get the shock-free condition where the incidence angle is zero at the inlet.
Mechanical agitation is widely used in industrial process engineering. In the present study, peformed was a numerical simulation on flows in a $45^{\circ}$ Pitched Paddle Type mixer. Through a CFD technique, effects of the position of the impeller on resultant flow pattern was studied. Results of computed torque on impeller to maintain the flow are also compared to the experimental data, and showed good qualitative agreements.
Axial fan without static blades requires the duct as a guidance for unskewed inflows. This work examined the geometric effects of a duct guided the in and out flows through an impeller. The present methodologies are computational predictions with parallel work by experimental validation. Several different positions of a rotor in a duct are proposed for plausible models of a rotor inside a duct. The optimum axial position of an impeller in a duct is found at the #4 model where the impeller lies on the inlet edge of a circular duct. The model shows a wider inlet area. The result of computational prediction is in good agreement with experiment measurement.
Structural and dynamic analyses of inducer and impeller for an oxidizer turbopump are peformed to investigate the safety level of strength and vibration at a design point. Due to high rotational speed of turbopump, effects of centrifugal forces are carefully considered in the structural analysis. Hydrodynamic pressure is also considered as an external force applied to inducer and impeller blades. A three-dimensional Finite Element Method (FEM) is used for linear and nonlinear structural analyses with modified Newton-Raphson iteration method. After the nonlinear trim solution is obtained from the structural analysis, dynamic characteristics are obtained as a function of rotational speed from the linearized eigenvalue analysis at an equilibrium position. According to the results of numerical analysis, the safety margins of strength and vibration resonances are sufficient enough for safe operation within the requited life cycle.

As a suitable volute configuration in the range of low specific speed, circular casing is suggested in this study. The internal flows in a centrifugal pump with the circular and spiral casings are measured by PIV and analyzed by CFD. The results show that the head and efficiency of the pump by a circular casing of very small radius are almost same as those by the spiral casing. Even at the best efficiency point, the internal flow of the pump by circular casing is asymmetric, and vortex and strong secondary flow occurs in the impeller passage. The radial velocity becomes higher remarkably only near the region of the discharge throat. The flow in the impeller outlet is strongly controlled by the circular casing because the velocity distribution almost does not affected by the position of the impeller blades.
