  • This paper deals with the dynamic characteristics of the shaft with impeller model which is the most important part in developing the resin mixing machine. Through reverse engineering, it is possible to make the shaft with impeller geometry model which is necessary vibration characteristic analysis by commercial impeller. The natural frequency analysis and structural analysis using finite element analysis software are performed on the imported commercial shaft with impeller model. The most important fundamental natural frequency of the shaft with impeller model is around 14.5 Hz, which well agrees with modal testing. The most effective design variables were extracted by ANOM(analysis of means) and pareto chart. This paper presents approximation 2nd order polynomial as design variables using RSM(response surface methodology). Generally, RSM take 2 or 3 design variables, but this method uses 5 design variables with table of mixed orthogonal array. Further more, the analyzed result of the commercial shaft with impeller is to be utilized for the structural design of resin chock mixing machine.

  • A study was conducted on the effect of leading edge location for the performance characteristics of a centrifugal compressor impeller. Five impellers with different leading edge location were selected for numerical analysis. The impeller with leading edge located 10% away from the inlet about meridional distance from entrance to exit showed the best total pressure ratio and efficiency. Also, this case showed relatively uniform flow distribution because of a weak intensity of the separation region at impeller exit. The impeller with leading edge located far from this location showed lowest total pressure ratio and efficiency. Performance of compressor also decreased due to non-uniform flow distribution at impeller exit.

  • A seawater pumps in the nuclear power plant is responsible for providing cooling water to other components all the time. Because of the depreciation, the seawater pump with current impeller consumes too much power for maintaining the total head. Therefore the objective of this study is to reduce power with maintaining certain the total head by cutting the current impeller. By using a commercial CFD code, FLUENT, the overall performance of seawater pump with current and modified impeller was simulated. Also Affinity law was applied at pumps with various impeller diameter and evaluated the validity of the affinity law. The numerical results show that the pump efficiency is quite irrelevant to the diameters of the impellers and the pump efficiency becomes worse over the designed flow rate. And affinity law result and numerical one show good agreements at small change of impeller diameter. One of the impeller diameters was decided to modify and was applied to the nuclear power plant with the numerical study above.

  • A numerical algorithm for three-dimension laminar flow in an agitated vessel was established by using the spherical coordinates. Flow pattern for the double-stage paddle impeller was not dependent upon the distance of among the impeller in the agitated vessels. The numerical simulation of the flow pattern in spherical and cylindrical agitated vessel agree well with the visualization results.

  • A particle image velocimetry (PIV) was applied to a flow measurement in a transonic centrifugal impeller. A phase locked measurement technique every $20\%$ blade pitch enabled a reconstruction of a velocity field over one blade pitch. The measured velocity field at the inducer of impeller clearly showed a shock wave generated on the suction surface of a blade.

  • An efficient method of machining impeller is presented. In the roughing process, the cutting area is divided into two regions to reduce cutting time and select cutting tools. The regions are determined by characteristic point on the geometry of impeller blade. Then, the tool of the maximum radius is selected in each area. Tool interference in cutting areas is avoided by checking the intersection between cooing tool axis and ruling line on blade surface.

  • The intracardiac axial flow pump has been developed This device has several advantages: it fits well anatomically, its blood-contacting surface is small, and it is implanted as easily as an artificial heart valve replacement. The axial flow pump consists of an impeller and a motor, both of which are encased in a housing. Two types of impeller with 4 vanes and 6 vanes are used. Sealing of the motor shaft is achieved by means of a ferrofluidic seal. A flow of 5$\ell$/min was obtained at a differential pressure of 100mmHg with a motor speed of 7091rpm with the 4-vane impeller and 6402rpm with the 6-vane impeller. Sealing was kept against a pressure of 150mmHg at 7000rpm with the 4-vane impeller and 6402rpm with the 6-vane impeller. Sealing was kept against a pressure of 150mmHg at 7000rpm over 24 hours. The index of hemolysis was 0.056 with the 4-vane impeller and 0.214 with the 6-vane impeller. The intracardiac axial flow pump is a very promising circulatory support.

  • This paper presents a case history on failures of impeller and shaft due to pressure pulsation at single stage feed water pumps in 700 MW nuclear power plant during commissioning operation. The pumps had been service and had run for approximately $40{\sim}50$ hours. For the most part, the failures of impeller occurred with the presence of a number of fatigue cracks. All cracks were associated with the deleterious surface layer of impeller by visual and metallurgical examination. On-site testing and analytical approach was performed on the systems to diagnose the problem and develop a solution to reduce the effect of exciting sources. A major concern at high-energy centrifugal pump is the pressure pulsation created from trailing edge of the Impeller blade, flow separation and recirculation at centrifugal pumps of partial load. Pressure pulsation due to the interaction generating between impeller and casing coincided with natural frequencies of the impeller and shaft system during 1ow load operation. It was identified that dynamic stress exceeding the fatigue strength of the material at the thin shroud section due to the hydraulic instability at running condition below BEP.
