In the pyroprocessing of spent nuclear fuels, fuel materials are recovered by electrochemical reactions on the surface of electrodes as well as stirring the electrolyte in electrolytic cells such as electrorefiner, electroreducer and electrowinner. The system with this equipment should first be scaled-up in order to commercialize the pyroprocessing. So in this study, the scale-up for those electrolytic cells was studied to design a large-scale system which can be employed in a commercial process in the future. Basically the dimensions of both electrolytic cells and electrodes should be enlarged on the basis of the geometrical similarity. Then the criterion of constant power input per unit volume, characterizing the fluid behavior in the cells, was introduced in this study and a calculation process based on trial-and-error methode was derived, which makes it possible to seek a proper speed of agitation in the electrolytic cells. Consequently examples of scale-up for an arbitrary small scale system were shown when the criterion of constant power input per unit volume and another criterion of constant impeller tip speed were respectively applied.

We investigated the effectiveness of natural zeolite (NZ) and sand (SD) as a capping material to block the release of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn) from heavily contaminated marine sediments and stabilize these heavy metals in the sediments. The efficiency of NZ and SD for blocking trace metals was evaluated in a flat flow tank attached with an impeller to generate wave. 0, 10, 30, and 50 mm depth of NZ or SD were capped on the contaminated marine sediments and the metal concentration in seawater was monitored. After completion of flow tank experiments, sequential extractions of the metals in the sediment below the capping material were performed. The difference of pH, EC, and DO concentration between uncapped and capped condition was not significant. The release of cations including Cd, Cu, and Zn were effectively blocked by NZ and SD capping but the interruption of Cr release was observed only in 50 mm depth of SD capped condition. However, the stabilization of Cr in 50 mm depth of SD capped condition was not achieved when compared to uncapped condition. NZ and SD capping were effective for stabilizing Cd, Cu, and Zn in marine sediments. It is concluded that the use of NZ with SD as a capping material is recommended for blocking Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn release and stabilizing them in contaminated marine sediments.

A new concept of an Eco-friendly desalination method is introduced in this study. The main idea of the desalination method of seawater is the condensation of the vaporized seawater by solar heat energy on the surface of seashore. The wind turbine blade plays a role of heat exchanger condensing the vaporized water in the air. In this analytical study, the availability of the proposed desalination system was studied. First, an analytical condensation theory of the vaporized water in air was arranged and the parametric study was conducted to estimate the amount of freshwater produced from the system with the change of the temperature difference between the humid air and turbine blade, and the relative humidity in air, and wind speed. From the analytical calculation, 2,927(ton/year) of freshwater was produced at the vertical-type wind turbine (Diameter=4m, Height=3m) as the relative humidity is 100%, the temperature difference between the impeller blade and the humid air is $40^{\circ}C$ and the wind speed is 10m/s.

A rapid processing method for fish sauce of high quality stability and favorable flavor was investigated using mackerel waste as starting material. The chopped waste was homogenized with water and hydrolyzed by commercial proteolytic enzymes such as Complex enzyme-2000($2.18\cdot10^4$ U/g solid, Pacific Chem. Co.) and Alcalase ($1.94\cdot10^4$ U/g solid, Novo) in a cylindrical vessel with 4 baffles and 6-bladed turbine impeller. Optimal pH and temperature for the hydrolysis with Complex enzyme-2000 were 8.0 and $50^{\circ}C$, and those with Alcalase were 9.0 and $55^{\circ}C$. In both cases, the reasonabe amount of added water and enzyme concentration based on the waste weight were $40\%,\;3\%$ and hydrolyzing time was 100 min. Thermal treatment of the hydrolysate with $6\%$ of invert sugar for 2 hours at $90^{\circ}C$ was adequated to inactivation of the enzymes and pasteurization of the hydrolysate. Flavor, taste and color of the hydrolysate were improved during the thermal treatment in which the browning reaction products might participate and result in antioxidative and bactericidal effects. Combined use of $0.005\%$ of Caryophylli flos with $6\%$ of invert sugar was also effective for the improvement of taste. Yield of the fish sauce based on the total nitrogen of the raw waste was $93.7\~94.9\%$, and $87.6\~87.9\%$ of the total nitrogen in the fish sauce was in the from of amino nitrogen. The pH, salinity and histamine content of the fish sauce prepared with $15\%$ of table salt were $6.1\~6.2$, $14.0\~14.5\%$ and less than $10mg\%$, respectively. The fish sauce was stable on bacterial growth during the storage of 60 days at $26\pm3^{\circ}C$ and the quality was also maintained.

Optimal temperature for the case of hydrolysis with Complex enzyme-2000 was 50 and that with Alcalase was $55^{\circ}C$. In both cases, the reasonable pH, amount of water for homo-genization, enzyme concentration and hydrolyzing time were 8.0, $40\%$ (W/W), $3\%$ and 100 min, respectively. Heating of the filtrated hydrolysate for 2 hours at $90^{\circ}C$ with $6\%$ of invert sugar was suitable for pasteurization of the hydrolysate and inactivation of enzymes. Flavor, taste and color of the hydrolysate was improved during the thermal treatment in which the browning reaction products might participate and result in antioxidative and bactericidal effects. Combined use of $0.005\%$ of Caryophylli flos with invert sugar was also effective for the improvement of taste. The HANARO, a multi-purpose research reactor of 30 MWth open-tank-in-pool type, has been under normal operation since its initial criticality in February, 1995. Recently, ten years after the initial operation of the HANARO, one of the two primary cooling pumps was decontaminated for overhaul maintenance in 2004. Before decontamination exposure doserate and surface contamination level of primary cooling pump measured at 4 points. After final decontamination exposure doserate and surface contamination level of primary cooling pump remeasured by same method done before. It is easy to decontaminate the out side exposed surfaces of the pump, but it is difficult to approach the inside surface due to double volute installed in the casing. Therefore, a new decontamination facility has been developed to solve this problem. A concentrated de-contaminant (DX-300) is rotated in the closed pump casing by the impeller actuated by a temporary motor. Nuclide particles are removed by the emulsification effect of the de-contaminant and the surface contaminants are chemically removed from the pump by the corrosion and dissolution effect. The inside surfaces of the primary cooling pump have been decontaminated by using the facility. As results, the contamination level of the inside surfaces was maintained below the surface contamination limit.
Processing conditions of whole sardine into modified fish sauce were investigated. Thawed and chopped sardine was homogenized and hydrolyzed using commercial proteolytic enzymes such as complex enzyme-2000($2.18{\cdot}10^4U/g solid$) and alcalase($1.94{\cdot}10^4\;U/g solid$) in a cylindrical vessel with 4 baffles and 6-bladed impeller. Optimal pH, enzyme concentration and temperature for the hydrolysis with complex enzyme-2000 were 7.0, $7\%$ (W/W) and $52^{\circ}C$, and-those with alcalase were 8.0, $6\%$ (W/W) and $60^{\circ}C$. In both cases, the reasonable amount of water for homogenization, agitation speed and hydrolyzing time were $100\%$ (W/W), 100 rpm and 210 minutes. Thermal treatment of the filtered hydrolysate at $90^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours with $6\%$ of invert sugar was adequated to inactivation of the enzymes and pasteurization of the hydrolysate. Flavor, taste and color of the hydrolysate were improved during the heating process in which the browning products might participate. The content of free amino nitrogen in the fish sauce seasoned with $15\%$ of table salt was ca. $1,640 mg\%$. Yield of the fish sauce based on the contents of proteinous and free amino nitrogen in the raw whole sardine was ca. $86\%$, and ca. $96\%$ of these compounds of the fish sauce was in the form of free amino nitrogen. The pH, salinity and histamine content of the fish sauce were $6.1\~6.3,\;14.2\~14.3\%$ and less than $10\;mg\%$.
Phase behavior of the ternary systems of water-insoluble simvastatin drug, which is well known to be effective drugs for hypercholesterolemia therapy, in solvent mixtures of dichloromethane and supercritical carbon dioxide was investigated to present a guideline of establishing operating conditions in the particle formation of the drugs by a supercritical anti-solvent recrystallization process utilizing dichloromethane as a solvent and carbon dioxide as an anti-solvent. The solubilities of simvastatin in the mixtures of dichloromethane and carbon dioxide were determined as functions of temperature, pressure and solvent composition by measuring the cloud points of the ternary mixtures at various conditions using a high-pressure phase equilibrium apparatus equipped with a variable-volume view cell. The solubility of the drug increased as the dichloromethane composition in solution and the system pressure increases at a fixed temperature. A lower solubility of the drug was obtained at a higher temperature. The second half of this work is focused on the particle formation of the simvastatin drug by a supercritical anti-solvent recrystallization process in a cylindrical high-pressure vessel equipped with an impeller. Microparticles of the simvastatin drug were prepared as functions of pressure (8 MPa to 12 MPa), temperature (303.15 K, 313,15 K), feed flow rate of carbon dioxide, and stirring speed (up to 3000 rpm), in order to observe the effect of those process parameters on the size and shape of the drug microparticles recrystallized.

Scaled-up production of oil containing diacylglycerol (DAG), so called diacylglycerol-oil, was produced by lipase-catalyzed reaction. Mixture of soybean oil and glyceryl monooleate with 1:2 molar ratio was esterified with Lipozyme RMIM in a batch-type reactor at 55$^{\circ}C$ and 300 rpm during 6 hr. After short-path distillation for removal of monoacylglycerol and free fatty acid as reaction by-products, diacylglycerol-oil mainly consisted of DAG (29 area%) and TAG (71 area%). The major compositional fatty acids in diacylglycerol-oil were oleic (44.36 wt%), and linoleic acids (37.36 wt%). Acid value and iodine value of diacylglycerol-oil were 0.13 and 112.6, respectively. Solid fat content (SFC) of diacylglycerol-oil was observed after differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis in which three melting peaks at -25.0, 0.1, and 11.2$^{\circ}C$ were shown.
Transient mixing states of two different fuel oils, dimethylformamide (DMF) oil and JetA1 oil, were investigated by using a color image processing and a neural network. A tank ($D{\times}H$, $310{\times}370mm$) was filled with JetA1 oil. The DMF oil was filled at a top tank, and was mixed with the JetA1 oil in the tank mixing tank via a sudden opening which was performed by nitrogen gas with 1.9 bar. An impeller was rotated with 700 rpm for mixing enhancements of the two fuel oils. To visualize the mixing state of the DMF oil with the JetA1 oil, the DMF oil was coated with Rhodamine B whose color was red. A LCD monitor was used for uniform illumination. The color changes of the DMF oil were captured by a camcoder and the images were transferred to a host computer for quantifying the information of color changes. The color images of two mixed oils were captured with the camcoder. The R, G, B color information of the captured images was used to quantify the concentration of the DMF oil. To quantify the concentration of the DMF oil in the JetA1 oil, a calibration of color-to-concentration was carried out before the main experiment was done. Transient mixing states of DMF oil with the JetA1 oil since after the sudden infiltration were quantified and characterized with the constructed visualization technique.
