  • For the purpose of determining the thickness of concrete lining and detect of the cavity where may be located behind tunnel lining, IE (Impact-Echo) method it effectively useful in the tunnel safety diagnosis and the quality control during the construction. As a part of case study, we applied IE method to various tunnel structure types such as road tunnel and subway tunnel constructed by NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method) and ASSM (American Steel Support Method). As tunnel specifications estimated from this method were compared with coring data, design drawing and other survey results, it was very good agreement with each other. In conclusion, we verified that IE method shows an accurate and reliable result. The conventional interpretation of IE method in frequency domain gives only vertical information at a certain point. However, the interpretation using time-frequency analysis and depth section imaging technique from two dimensional profiling surveys can show more reliable information about structure inside.

  • Elastic wave velocity measurement technique such as impact-echo method and ultrasonic pulse velocity method has been successfully used to evaluate the moduli and strength of concrete. However, estimation results obtained by the NDT methods do not agree well with real things because longitudinal wave velocity is influenced by various factors. In this paper, among several factors influencing P-wave velocity, the influence of moisture content in concrete was investigated through the experiment. Test results show that longitudinal wave velocity is significantly affected by the moisture content of concrete, i.e., the lower moisture content. the lower velocity. Moisture content influences rod-wave velocity measured by impact-echo method stronger than ultrasonic pulse velocity measured by transmission method. During drying process with ages. the difference of increasing rate between longitudinal wave velocity and compressive strength of concrete is gradually increased. Therefore, to establish more accurate relationship between longitudinal wave velocity and strength, the difference of the increasing rate should be considered.

  • The dynamic modulus of elasticity of concrete can be determined nondestructively using impact echo test as prescribed in KS F 2437. The fundamental longitudinal frequency of the concrete cylinders with free-free boundary condition was estimated by the wavelet transform theory. The advantage of the wavelet transform over either a pure spectral or temporal decomposition of the signal is that the features of the pertinent signals can be characterized in the time-frequency plane. For the concrete mix design utilized in this study, no significant difference between the dynamic and the static moduli of elasticity was observed. This was contrary to the perceived general notion of having the dynamic modulus considerably higher than the static modulus. It has been shown that the modulus from static and dynamic by impact echo test are comparable to each other fairly well, when the effect of strain level was properly taken into account. In this experimental test, it was shown that the dynamic modulus is approximately equal to the tangent modulus at $1{\times}10^{-4}$ strain level.

  • Integrated analysis of GPR, impact echo (IE) and impulse response (IR) was performed to detect the rear cavity of concrete for a test-bed which was made with the same scale and component ratio to the real concrete structure. The test-bed was designed to be capable of observing various response reflecting the existence of iron reinforcing bar and cavity. GPR survey did not clearly resolve the existence of the cavity, although distinguishable responses were observed in the presence of the cavity. In contrast, IE and IR method showed distinct responses, indicating the existence of the cavity. Finally, integrated application of the three methods makes it possible to exactly identify the location of the cavity, although the iron reinforcing bar made a little variation of response.

  • The reflected signals from the defects of a pile and the boundaries between the pile and soils are analyzed to evaluate the integrity of drilled shafts in the impact-echo test. Signals varied according to both of the stiffness ratio of the pile to defects and that of the pile to surrounding soils. Model tests using the small size pile in the laboratory and numerical analyses have limitations in finding the characteristics of the signals due to different stress wave characteristics and unreliable modelling for the interaction between the pile and soils respectively. Full scale testing piles which have artificial defects are installed by the actual construction method and they were used to investigate the characteristics of reflected signals according to defects and the stiffness ratios of the pile to soils around.

  • Impact-echo test is a non-destructive testing method to determine dynamic properties of a material. This presentation introduces the experimental set-up and procedure of the test for rock specimens. In addition, the test results of domestic rocks collected in 5 different areas, a cement mortar and aluminium alloy are presented. The test results include resonance frequencies of P- and S-wave as well as damping ratios of the described 7 different materials. The differences between dynamic and static values of elastic moduli are about 10%, while the dynamic Poisson's ratios are greater than the static Poisson's ratios by at least 0.07. The damping ratio is dependent on the joint density and degree of weathering of a rock specimen.
