In this study, in-situ dynamic tests of the world's longest steel box tied-arch bridge over the Yangtze River, China, are reported. The double deck bridge supports highway and monorail systems at upper and lower levels, respectively. Strain, displacement, and acceleration responses were measured and used to investigate the vibration characteristics of the bridge when excited by running trains and/or trucks at a speed of 5-60 km/h, train braking, and truck bouncing. Impact factors were correlated with the running speed of trains and trucks. A three-dimensional finite element model of the coupled monorail-train-bridge vibration system accounting for track irregularities was established to understand the system behavior and validated by the experimental results. Truck bouncing was the dominant impact factor on bridge responses. The running speed of vehicles determined the riding comfort of traveling trains.

In this study, numerical analysis is performed to investigate the sound radiation characteristics of an apartment house according to the type of the slab system. In order to satisfy the boundary condition of the apartment house, the whole floor is modelled with FEM model for three different structural system: wall, RC, flat slab system. From the analytical results, it is shown that heavy weight floor impact noise of wall type slab is larger than that of the other slab systems and the noise radiated from the wall have great effect on the sound pressure level. The results also show that the vibration energy of RC or flat slab system is widely distributed over the whole slab, which is main reason that the noise induced by the slab systems is reduced in comparison with wall slab system.

This study investigated the characteristics of heavy-weight floor impact sounds of box-frame type structure using 1:10 scale model. Ten types of floor structures(bare slabs and floating floors) were evaluated in terms of dynamic stiffness and loss factor. Floor vibrations and radiated sounds generated by simulated impact source were also measured. The results showed that the bakelite was appropriate for simulating concrete slab in the 1:10 scale model, and surface velocity and sound pressure level of concrete slab measured from the scale model showed similar tendencies with the results from in-situ in frequency domain. It was also found that dynamic behaviors of layered floor structures in the 1:10 scale model were similar to those in a real scale. Therefore, the use of 1:10 scale model would be useful for evaluating the heavy-weight floor impact sound insulation of layered floor structures when the frequency-dependent dynamic properties of each material are known.

In this paper, 3-D reciprocating compressor is taken into flow-structure interaction analysis. The full cycle process consisted of cylinder expansion and compression has been modeled without considering flow leakage through cylinder wall. Fully-coupled FSI analysis of this compressor model was iteratively solved and gives sufficient result with the experimental test. The study is emphasized to thoroughly investigate discharge valve motion, opening and closing, in order to determine discharge valve region which is prone to have high effective stress. The cylinder pressure is successfully validated before conducting impact analyses between discharge valve and other susceptible supported structure. Velocity profile has been obtained in FSI analysis is used as initial condition to carry out further impact analyses. Stress result of discharge valve and valve spring gives preliminary estimation of higher stress area due to its impact phenomena.
This paper presents a new method to study the impact factor of an old bridge based on the model updating technique. Using the genetic algorithm (GA) by minimizing an objective function of the residuals between the measured and predicted responses, the bridge and vehicle coupled vibration models were updated. Based on the displacement relationship and the interaction force relationship at the contact patches, the vehicle-bridge coupled system can be established by combining the equations of motion of both the bridge and vehicles. The simulated results show that the present method can simulate precisely the response of the tested bridge; compared with the other bridge codes, the impact factor specified by the bridge code of AASHTO (LRFD) is the most conservative one, and the value of Chinese highway bridge design code (CHBDC) is the lowest; for the large majority of old bridges whose road surface conditions have deteriorated, calculating the impact factor with the bridge codes cannot ensure the reliable results.

Measuring similarity between two signals is a key element of the location template matching (LTM) method which is one of impact source localization technique. As a measure of similarity, the correlation coefficient is most widely used, and the group delay based method is recently proposed to improve the accuracy of finding the impact source. In practice, the LTM method assumes that the similarity between two signals decreases as the distance between two corresponding impact points increases, where the distance between two neighboring impact points defines the grid spacing. In this paper, it is shown that this assumption is not always true but the correlation coefficients fluctuate forming a main robe and many side robes as the distance between two neighboring impact points increases. On the other hand, the standard deviation of group delay sharply increases with a small increase of the grid spacing. These are demonstrated by using a simple cantilever beam. Based on these findings, an optimal way of implementing the LTM method may be suggested by combining the correlation coefficient and the group delay based approaches.
In apartment buildings, floor-impact sound has bean regarded as the major source which induces complaints from residents. It is mainly due to the use of light-weight structures. The vibration produced by impact on one part of an apartment building would travel as far as the other parts of structure with a little alleviation. As a result, the impact sound from upstairs has been regarded as a main source of noise causing discontentment among occupants. This study was carried out to measure the floor-impact sound levels and evaluate the insulation performance of floor-impact sound for nine apartment buildings. The floor-impact sound levels were measured for twenty-five On-dol floor structures and various factors which influence the floor-impact sound were analyzed.

In this study, it is outlined that heavy weight floor impact noise induced by the vibration of slab can be reduced using multi tuned mass damper(MTMD) effectively. Substructure synthesis is utilized to develope analytical model of the slab coupled with MTMD and acoustic power is introduced to evaluate the performance of noise control for simplicity. Numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the effect of the properties of MTMD on the vibration and noise control of the simply supported slab. Numerical analysis shows that mass ratio of MTMD is critical on the vibration and noise control of the slab and it is also essential to reduce the vibration in higher modes of slab in the light of its great effect on the radiation of sound.
The demand of blasting work in civil engineering work is increasing because of the increasing social infra-structural construction work. The blasting method creates large benefit in regard to the economic aspect and shortening construction period. This method, however, has problems to be solved in respect to the blasting vibration and noise. Blasting vibration and noise have been studied by many workers, regarding to the impact on the structure and human body. This investigation is concerned on the affect of blasting vibration and noise on the animals which is relatively new. In general, animals have inferior mental capacity than human in hearing but have higher sensitivity on the vibration and noise due to blasting. The object of this study is to investigate an appropriate measurement of lessening damage on the animals by vibration and noise due to blasting.
This work was intended to investigate the effect of vibration transmission paths on the ride vibration of tractor during the rotavating and transporting operations by applying the vibration path analysis method. Accelerations at the cab mounts were measured during the rotavating and transporting operations. Ride vibrations at the sear were than calculated using the measured accelerations at the cab mounts, and the frequency response functions and inertances between the seat and cab mounts, which were derived experimentally by the impact hammer test in static condition. The human sensitivity to vibration frequency was also taken into consideration for the calculation of ride vibrations at the 1/3 octave center frequencies in the frequency domain. Vibrations transmitted through rear cab mounts affected more significantly the ride vibration of tractor. The peak accelerations at the seat occurred at the frequencies of the engine and crank speed, and the frequency induced by tire lugs on the road transportation. It was found that the rear cab mounts should be improved in order to reduce the ride vibrations more effectively.
