  • With the development of information and communication technology and spread of smart devices, online information exchange has become a daily routine. Accordingly, the management and utilization of online word of mouth (WOM) has become an important issue for companies. Numerous studies have examined the impact of online WOM on firm performance. This study analyzes the impact of negative word of mouth (NWOM) on firm value, considering the influence of corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity and research and development (R&D) investment. Using a hierarchical linear model, we find that 1) NWOM has a negative impact on firm value, 2) CSR activities do not significantly influence this impact, and 3) R&D investment reduces this negative impact. This study contributes by demonstrating the effect of NWOM on firm value, examining the influence of CSR activities and R&D investment on the impact of NWOM, and confirming that the hierarchical linear model can be applied effectively to panel data in empirical studies. As a practical implication, companies must prevent and manage NWOM, whose impact, when caused by an unavoidable incident, can be alleviated by proactively announcing that the company is striving for competitiveness, for instance, by investing in R&D.

  • The study examines lagged economic effects of research and development (R&D) investment on the market value of manufacturing firms listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange or the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in China. This study applies panel data analysis methods to address the following issues: 1) There might be an adjustment lag in the impact of R&D investment on corporate market value, and 2) Unobserved firm effects must be taken into account. The balanced panel data includes a total of 1,462 observations with 34 cross-sections of manufacturing firms listed on Chinese stock markets and with 27 time-specific quarterly periods from 2007 to 2017. The results indicate that the R&D investment of Chinese manufacturing firms tends to yield favorable market value of the firm with some adjustments to time. The results show that R&D investment exhibits a strong positive impact on their market value of manufacturing firms in Chinese stock markets. Moreover, R&D investment has a positive time-lag effect on the market value of the firm. Interestingly, the R&D investment of Chinese manufacturing firms generate a relatively constant positive effect on their market value, supporting the notion that the corresponding returns of R&D investment for such firms yield lagged but added market values.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to investigate the direct and indirect impact of innovation space factors on the growth of semiconductor enterprises. Design/methodology - This empirical study uses the financial statements of 83 semiconductor listed companies in 23 provinces from 2004 to 2019 approved by CSRC (2019). A stepwise regression and backward regression are employed in order to examine the role of innovation space to expand technology investment in promoting business growth and uses South Korean Samsung's investment in China as a test case. Findings - Results indicate that innovation space, technology input, geographical area, owner's background, operating years and financing liabilities all contribute to a boost in business growth. Factors such as carbon emission, financial liberalization, government efficiency, technology input, and financing liabilities further influence management growth. Innovation space follows a nonlinear pattern, and this plays a positive role in magnifying the influence of technology on management growth. Additionally, operations of the state-owned companies and expansionary financing enterprises are influenced by the external economy. Regarding the spatial distribution, the Samsung investment in 24 companies in China shows that Samsung focuses on the acquisition of scarce resources for semiconductor production as a component of its investment and innovation strategy. Originality/value - Even though prior research has considered the concepts studied here, this study contributes to empirically evaluate the direct impact of innovation space on business growth, and the indirect impact of innovation space on business growth through technology investment. This study includes an in-depth discussion of the practical effects that innovation space has on China's economy, using a case of South Korean Samsung's investment in China as a test the empirical findings.

  • This study investigates the impact of over-investment on the market value of cash holdings. In addition, this paper examines whether the effect of over-investment on the value of cash holdings differs depending on firms' ownership structure. The results show that increase in over-investment reduces the market value of cash holdings. This suggests that investors perceive that over-investment deteriorates future business performance and generates excessive burdens on future cash flows. As a result, they provide negative evaluation on the market value of cash holdings. In addition, the negative impact of over-investment on the market value of cash holdings is more significant for owner manager firms where managers hold a high level of equity. Such empirical results imply that owner manager firms are more likely to use their cash holdings for private interest, therefore, over-investment reduces the cash value to a greater extent. This study provides empirical evidence that the effect of over-investment on the market value of cash holdings varies depending on the characteristics of firms' ownership structure.

  • This study examines the relationships between R&D investment and Market value of Firms using data of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector of Korea. In particular, this paper investigates the role of technology innovation system in the impact of R&D investment on firm's Market value of Firms. Findings from the previous studies on the relationship between R&D investment and Market value of Firms are positive relationship. Main of the previous studies demonstrated a positive impact of R&D investment on Market value of Firms. On the other hand, some recent studies showed this is not the case. Those studies persisted that the technological innovation system for managing and efficiently utilizing R&D investment and capability has to be built in order for R&D investment to give rise to increases in Market value of Firms. According to the Oslo manual by OECD, it is assumed that a technology innovation system can becharacterized as three factors :capability for technological innovation, capability for technology commercialization, capability for technological innovation management. This study divides sample firms into two groups using the "Inno-Biz" certificate system of the Korean Small and Medium Business Administration (SMBA): Inno-Biz firms Vs. Not Inno-Biz firms. The system selects innovative SMEs denoted as "Inno-Biz" using the above factors as criteria. The results revealed that the technology innovation system has the moderating effect to R&D investment on Market value of Firms.

  • Social enterprises that are solving pressing global issues and providing services such as micro-finance, affordable housing, appropriate technology and education for the 'bottom of the pyramid' as well as cultural and community-related businesses that improve the 'quality of life' within a society are the target of impact investments. Among them, a capital financing is one of the most important factor in founding and fostering of social enterprise. • The choice of big public investment project needs an appropriate feasibility analysis before it is implemented, bemuse a rot wisely chosen one would bring about big and longrun societal costs. But the feasibility analysis for the big public investment project in Korea has been done without linking the economic benefits and environmental damages. Consequently social conflicts arose frequently during and after project implementation, owing to such concerns asincreasing costs and serious ecological damages. The recent social conflict over the Saemangeum Project is a typical case. This reclamation project began in 1991 and finished 60% of the whole process in 1999, when its feasibility was again assessed under the public pressure by the joint assessment team consisting of both citizen's and government's professionals. Even the assessment report by this joint team could not show the convincing results owing to the improper assessment procedure and failure to set proper feasibility criteria. This paper pointed out the limitations of our current procedure of feasibility assessment and identified the concrete problems that atosee during the recent reassessment process of the Saemangeum reclamation project by the joint team. In order to improve the current problem-ridden practices, it is concluded by the policy recommendation for establishing a right feasibility assessment procedure for the public investment projects.
