The safety evaluations of railway wheelsets make use of the static fracture toughness obtained in ingot materials. The static fracture toughness of wheelset materials has been extensively studied by experiments, but the dynamic fracture toughness with respect to wheelset materials has not been studied enough yet. It is necessary to evaluate the characteristics of the fracture mechanics depending on each location for a full-scale wheelset for high-speed trains, because the load state for each location of the wheelset while running is different the contact load between the wheel and rail, cyclic stress in the wheel plate, etc. This paper deals with the fracture toughness depend on load rates. The fracture toughness depending on load rate data shows that once the downward curve from quasi-static values was reached, subsequent values showed a slow increase with respect to the impact velocity. This means that dynamic fracture toughness should be considered in the design code of the wheelset material.
The objective of this study was to examine the effect of oxidation inhibitor contents on the work of adhesion, fracture toughness, and impact strength of the unidirectional carbon-carbon composites (C/C composites). The molybdenum disilicide ($MoSi_2$) used as an oxidation inhibitor was impregnated with phenolic resins to improve the anti-oxidation properties of the composites in different concentrations of 4, 12 and 20 wt%. Based on Wilhelmy equation, the work of adhesion of C/C composites was calculated by contact angle methods. Fracture toughness and impact strength were pressured by three-point bending test for the critical intensity factor ($K_IC$) and Izod test method, respectively. As a result, the composites made with $MoSi_2$ resulted in an increasing of both fracture toughness and impact strength. Especially, the composites made with 12 wt% $MoSi_2$ content showed the highest value of London dispersive component, $W_A\;^L$, in work of adhesion, resulting from improving the interfacial adhesion force among fibers, filler, and matrix in this system.
This paper has an purpose to study the effect of C on the toughness of YS 460 MPa FCAW weld metal. These effects were evaluated by charpy impact and CTOD test about 4 FCAW weld metal containing various C and Si content in relation to microstructure. Increase of C content was helpful to increase AF volume fraction and reduce PF(G) and FS volume fraction by increasing super cooling rate for ferrite transformation. Also, Increase of C content up to 0.045wt% made the strength and impact toughness higher by increasing AF volume fraction. The weld metal containing higher C content indicated higher CTOD value. It is because the volume fraction of PF(G) and FS, can play a role as crack initiation site, was reduced. Effect of C on the strength and elongation of weld metal was higher with an increase of Si contents.

In the 1.1 Mn steel containing boron, effects of the 0.1 V addition and processing condition were studied. In the $550^{\circ}C$ interrupted cooling where the main structure is (ferrite + pearlite), the impact toughness decreased as the tensile strength increased by the 0.1 V addition. The $800^{\circ}C$ rolling including two step rolling of $800-770^{\circ}C$, exhibited better strength-toughness balance, as compared to the $770^{\circ}C$ rolling. This seems to be kind of conditioning effect at higher temperature, e.g., more uniform deformation effect. In the accelerated cooling after the $750^{\circ}C$ rolling in a dual phase range, the impact toughness was enhanced, despite a large increase in tensile strength. This is believed to be related to the change of main structure from (ferrite + pearlite) to (ferrite + bainite).
The effects of reheating during welding on the microstructure and impact toughness of weld metal in 25% Cr super duplex stainless steels were investigated. Using different heat inputs, weld metals with different reheated regions were obtained. This showed that, depending on the reheating temperature, the microstructure in the reheated region was quite different from that of the as-deposited microstructure. When reheated into the ${\gamma}+{\alpha}$ temperature range, fine intragranular austenite was formed in the as-deposited columnar structure. However, when reheated above the ${\alpha}$ solvus temperature range, most of the columnar structure disappeared and fine equiaxed austenite and ferrite were formed. Because of the larger amount of fine austenite in the reheated region, a higher impact toughness was obtained in the weld metal with a higher amount of reheated region.
The effects of cooling rate on the microstructures, precipitation of Cu-cluster, .epsilon.-Cu and impact toughness of high strength low alloy(HSLA) steel were studied using hardness tester, impact tester, DSC(differential scanning calorimetry), AES(auger electron spectroscopy) and TEM(transmission electron microscopy). Not only the Cu-precipitates but also the segregation of Cu, As, Sb, P, S, N, Sn along grain boundary were not observed at the specimens heat treated from 800.deg. C to 300.deg. C with the cooling time of 12-125 sec. The Cu-cluster, .epsilon.-Cu are formed by introducing ageing after cooling and the effect of precipitates on hardening increase after cooling was the same in all cooling rate. The peak hardness was obtained at an ageing of 500.deg. C in all cooling conditions. The impact energy become higher as the cooling time increases. This fact can be explained to be due to the tempering effect applied on the cooling stage since the present alloy has a relatively high Ms temperature and the local high concentration of the retained austenite.
This study has observed that the dynamic behavior of Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) in low velocity impact varies with impact velocity. MMCs with 15 fiber volume percent were fabricated by using the squeeze casting method. The AC8A was used as the matrix, and the alumina and the carbon were used as reinforcements. The tensile and vibration tests conducted yielded the yielded the tensile stress and elastic modulus of MMCs The low pass filter and instrumented impact test machine was adopted to study dynamic behaviors of MMCs corresponding to impact velocity. Stable impact signals were obtained by using the low pass filter. Impact corresponding to impact velocity. Stable impact signals were obtained by using the low pass filter. Impact energy of unreinforced alloy and MM s increased as the impact velocity increased. The increase of crack propagation energy was especially prominent, but the dynamic toughness of each material did not change much. To show the relation between crack initiation energy and dynamic fracture toughness, a simple model was proposed by using the strain energy and stress distribution at notch. The model revealed that crack initiation energy is proportional to the square of dynamic fracture toughness and inversely proportional to elastic modulus.

This paper presents experimental study of the static and dynamic fracture toughness behavior of a A1-6061 aluminum alloy reinforced alumina( .delta. -A1$_{2}$0$_{3}$) whiskers with 5%, 10%, 15% volume fraction. The static fracture tests using three-point bending specimen were performed by UTM25T. And drop weight impact tester performing dynamic fracture tests was used to measure dynamic locads applied to a fatigue-precracked specimes. The oneset of crack initiation was detected uwing a strain gage bonded near a crack tip. The value of static fracture toughness $K_{IC}$ and dynamic fracture toughness $K_{ID}$ were decided on the basis of linear elastic fracture mechanics. The effects of fiber volume fraction and loading on fracture toughness were investigated. The distribution of whiskers, bonding state and fracture interfaces involved in void, fiber pull-out state were investigated by optical microscopy(OM) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM)

This study was carried out in the austempering temperature and time after Ni, Mo addition in purpose of modification of impact toughness of austempered ductile irons. Addition of alloy element and austempering treatment of $900^{\circ}C$ 60 minutes followed by $300^{\circ}C$, $350^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes, in this case impact value was increased by ideal mixed structure. But impact value was decreased when holing time is 120minutes, this is attributed to segregation and carbide precipitation from high carbon austenite. Highest impact value was obtained by $350^{\circ}C$ (Mo-addition) and $400^{\circ}C$ (Ni-addition). This phenomena was caused by presence of remained austenite. At all austempering temperature,, Ni-added specimen showed higher impact values than that of Mo-added specimen. And hardness property was affected by austempering temperature and holding time rather than amounts of alloying element.
