Novel Imidazolium Ionic Liquids Containing Quaternary Ammonium Iodide or Secondary Amine for Dye-sensitized Solar Cell

  • A new type of ionic liquid based on N-(3-aminepropyl)imidazolium iodide, called IIQAI, which consists of imidazolium and quaternary ammonium salt, and APII-(hydroxyethyl, propyl, hexyl) were synthesized and used as ionic liquid in dye-sensitized solar cells. APII-hexyl is solid, whereas IIQAI, APII-(hydroxyethyl, propyl) are viscous liquids. The synthesized ionic liquid showed relative thermal stability compared to the commercial ionic liquid of DMII. Among them, IIQAI was more stable than the other ionic liquid because of the two salt groups. APII-hydroxyethyl, which contains two hydroxyl groups, showed low viscosity with good flow. New types of ionic liquids were examined by $^1H$-NMR spectroscopy, thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). IIQAI enabled a solar energy conversion efficiency of 6.3%, which is slightly higher than that of the referenced (DMII, 6.2%).

Electrochemical Characteristics of Supercapacitor Using Ionic Liquid Electrolyte (Supercapacitor용 이온성 액체 전해질의 전기화학적 특성)

  • Supercapacitor has been studied actively as one of the most promising electrochemical energy storage system for a wide range of applications. To increase the energy density of supercapacitor, the introduction of ionic liquids is required. In this study, two types of EMI-$BF_4$ based on quaternary imidazolium salt were prepared with quaternary reaction and anion exchange. The structural characterization and thermal stability were analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance($^1H$-NMR) and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), respectively. Thermal stability of the EMI-$BF_4$ using TGA confirmed that, after heat treatment, the decomposition temperature of EMI-$BF_4$ was increased. Supercapacitors were fabricated with synthesized and commercial ionic liquids, and charge/discharge characteristics were also investigated. The capacity of supercapacitor, for synthesized and commercial EMI-$BF_4$ were determined to be 0.067 F and 0.073 F respectively, by means of charge/discharge test.

  • 전기습윤이란 고체 표면에 형성된 액적에 전기장을 인가하게 되면 액적과 표면의 계면에너지 감소로 인해 접촉각이 변화되는 현상을 말한다. 이 현상은 전자종이 구현에 응용이 모색되고 있으며, 다초점 렌즈, 마이크로 프리즘, 반사형 디스플레이 등에도 응용될 수 있다. 전기습윤현상의 응용 가능성이 현실화됨에 따라 최근 여러 표면에서의 전기습윤 현상이 연구되고 있다. 예를 들면, 나노 구조로 형성된 실리콘 기판에서 molten salt (1-ethyl-3-methyl-1-H-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate)에 22 V를 인가하면 약 $180^{\circ}$에서 $110^{\circ}$로 접촉각변화를, cyclopentanol에 50 V를 인가하면 표면에 완전히 퍼지는 현상이 보고된 바 있고, 배열된 Carbon Nanotube 박막에서는 탈이온수와 0.03 M NaCl 용액에 대해서 0~50 V를 가해줌에 따라 각각 $155^{\circ}$에서 $90^{\circ}$, $130^{\circ}$에서 $50^{\circ}$로의 접촉갑 변화가 있음이 관찰되었다. 본 연구에서는 화학적으로 안정하고 그 활용도가 매우 광범위한 실리카 코팅층을 전기분무증착법(electrospray deposition)을 이용해 형성하고, 코팅층의 표면 거칠기와 구조, 전기절연층의 두께 등에 따른 전기습윤 현상 거동을 조사하였다.

Physical and Thermodynamic Properties of Imidazolium Ionic Liquids (이미다졸계 이온성 액체의 물성)

  • Ionic liquids (ILs) existing as liquid state at room temperature are composed of a immense heterocyclic cation and inorganic anion which is smaller than cation's size. Thus, the species of cation and anion as well as the length of alkyl group on the cation have influence on their physical properties. Their outstanding properties such as non-volatility, thermal stability and wide range of electrochemical stability make these materials excellent candidates for green solvent which can substitute the conventional organic solvents. In this study, ILs based on imidazolium cation have been synthesized such as 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([BMIM][Br]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM] [Cl]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide ([BMIM][I]), and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM][$BF_4$]). The density, viscosity, refractive index, heat capacity and ionic conductivity of [BMIM][Br], [BMIM][I], and [BMIM] [$BF_4$] were measured over range of temperature of 293.2 to 323.2 K. The density and refractive index values of [BMIM][I] were the highest among three ILs and the viscosity values of [BMIM][Br] were the highest among three ILs. The heat capacities [BMIM][$BF_4$] were higher than those of [BMIM][Br]. The ionic conductivities of [BMIM][$BF_4$] were higher than those of [BMIM][I].

Cycloaddition of Carbon Dioxide to Allyl Glycidyl Ether Using Silica-supported Ionic Liquid as a Catalyst (실리카에 고정화된 이온성액체를 촉매로 이용한 알릴글리시딜에테르와 이산화탄소의 부가반응)

  • In this study, imidazolium salt ionic liquid on amorphous silica was prepared and its catalytic performance in the cycloaddition of $CO_2$ with allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) to produce heterocyclic carbonate was investigated. The ionic liquid was generated on chloropropyl functionalized silica through the immobilization of imidazole. The prepared catalyst was characterized using a number of instrumental analysis including XRD, BET, $^{29}Si$ MAS-NMR and SEM. $^{29}Si$ MAS-NMR showed that the ionic liquid formed adduct with the chloropropyl groups attached to the silica surface. The immobilized ionic liquid showed very good catalytic activity for the cycloaddition of $CO_2$ with AGE, showing 55-61% of AGE conversion with over 85% of the carbonate selectivity at $80-120^{\circ}C$. Its AGE conversion and selectivity to the carbonate were even higher than the homogeneous analog, 1-n-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium bromide (BMImBr).

Catalytic Performance of Ionic Liquids in the Synthesis of Glycerol Carbonate from Glycerol and Urea (글리세롤과 요소로부터 글리세롤카보네이트 합성에서 이온성액체의 촉매 특성)

  • The preparation of glycerol carbonate (GC) from urea through carbonylation with renewable glycerol was investigated by using ionic liquid catalysts. It was found that quaternary ammonium salt and imidazolium salt ionic liquids with a shorter alkyl chain length and higher nucleophilic anion showed better catalytic performance. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time and degree of vacuum on the reactivity of TBAC catalyst ware discussed. Zinc chloride ($ZnCl_2$) was used as co-catalyst with the ionic liquid catalyst. The mixed catalyst showed a synergy effect on the glycerol conversion and GC yield probably due to the acid-base properties of the catalysts.

Liquid Extraction of Succinic Acid by Aqueous Two-Phase Systems Composed of Piperidinium Ionic Liquids and Phosphate Salt (피페리딘계 이온성 액체와 포스페이트 염으로 구성된 수상이성분계를 이용한 숙신산의 추출)

  • As an effective method for extraction of succinic acid, aqueous two-phase systems based on piperidinium ionic liquids were used in this study. Effects of the alkyl chain length of cation in piperinidium ionic liquids on phase diagram and extraction efficiencies were investigated. Experimental results show that aqueous two phase systems can be formed by adding appropriate amount of piperidinium ionic liquids to aqueous $K_2HPO_4$ solutions. It can be found that the ability of piperidinium ionic liquids for phase separation followed the order [OMPip][Br]>[HMPip][Br]>[BMPip][Br]>[EMPip][Br]. The biphase-forming ability of piperidinium ionic liquids was higher than that of imidazolium and pyrrolidinium ionic liquids in the presence of $K_2HPO_4$. 75~95% of the succinic acid could be extracted into the ionic liquid-rich phase in a single-step extraction. There was little difference in the extraction efficiency of succinic acid by piperidinium ionic liquids comparing to other ionic liquids such as imidazolium and pyrrolonidium ionic liquids. This aqueous two phase system by piperidinium ionic liquid is suggested to have effective application for the separation of succinic acid.
