SPECTRAL ANALYSIS OF WATER-STRESSED FOREST CANOPY USING EO-l HYPERION DATA

  • Plant water deficiency during drought season causes physiological stress and can be a critical indicator of forest fire vulnerability. In this study, we attempt to analyze the spectral characteristics of water stressed vegetation by using the laboratory measurement on leaf samples and the canopy reflectance spectra extracted from satellite hyperspectral image data. Leaf-level reflectance spectra were measured by varying moisture content using a portable spectro-radiometer. Canopy reflectance spectra of sample forest stands of two primary species (pine and oak) located in central part of the Korean peninsula were extracted from EO-l Hyperion imaging spectrometer data obtained during the drought season in 2001 and the normal precipitation year in 2002. The preliminary analysis on the reflectance spectra shows that the spectral characteristics of leaf samples are not compatible with the ones obtained from canopy level. Although moisture content of vegetation can be influential to the radiant flux reflected from leaf-level, it may not be very straightforward to obtain the spectral characteristics that are directly related to the level of canopy moisture content. Canopy spectra form forest stands can be varied by structural variables (such as LAt, percent coverage, and biomass) other than canopy moisture content.

  • In aquaculture industrial field, an automatic management and control system is needed to cope with the difficulties such as expensive wage, ripe age of management worker and risk according to the unexpected change of environmental conditions in the aquarium. This paper introduces an automatic aquarium monitoring and control system. The system is developed using PC single board computer. A PC can be connected to multi-single hoard computers, and the communication between PC and single board computers is based on RS-422/485 interfacing method. The physical data of pH, DO, temperature and water level etc. are real-timely treated in the single board computer though individual transducers, transfered to the main monitoring PC through RS-422/485 communication, and those data are graphically shown on the PC monitor. Furthermore, the environmental circumstance can be monitored through the image processing system, and the emergency system can be operated under the condition of environmental incident such as electric power stoppage, DO deficiency, pump shut down and low level water etc.

  • A 59-year-old man with thymic carcinoma underwent Tc-99m MIBI myocardial SPECT, and Tc-99m MIBI uptake in the mass was unexpectedly found in a planar image. SPECT images of the thorax showed an increased uptake area with central photon deficiency (a ring-like appearance), which reflected central tumor irreversible ischemia or progressing necrosis with peripheral viable tumor tissue.

  • A 38-year-old woman presented with a week's history of binocular horizontal double vision and acute vertigo with gaze-induced nystagmus. We considered a diagnosis of one of the six syndromes of the sixth cranial nerve and evaluated several causes. She had history of severe anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, and hypertension. Magnetic resonance imaging with angiography showed stenosis of the right vertebral artery and hyperintensity on both basal ganglia. As we describe here, we should consider vertebrobasilar insufficiency as a cause for sixth cranial nerve palsy if a patient has high risk for microvascular ischemia, even in the absence of acute brain hemorrhage or infarction.

  • In this paper, we propose RF front-end architecture using hybrid conversion method to receive broadband signal. The validity is verified by design, fabrication and experiment. The proposed RF front-end architecture due to up-conversion block improves the deficiency of performance deterioration to be generated through harmonic signal and image signal conversion in the conventional RF front-end, and improves the deficiency of the complexity that is from to adopt a multiple local oscillators for the generation of wideband LO signal in the conventional RF front-end by applying the principle that tuning bandwidth is multiplied at sub-harmonic mixer. Manufactured circuits satisfy the deduced design specification and target standard with gain above 80 dB, noise figure below 6.0 dB and IIP3 performance above -5.0 dBm for the condition of the minimum gain in RF front-end.

A study on perceived service value among the students of Hotel Culinary Department in Hyejeon College (혜전대학 호텔조리과 학생이 인식하는 서비스 가치에 관한 연구)

  • The result of this study suggests that students' perception of service value is related to functional value with regard to need and satisfaction, epistemic value, image, emotional value, functional value with regard to price and quality, and social value. Specifically female students give less importance to epistemic value than their male counterparts. Students in the 2nd grade gave less favorable scores to the functional value with regard to need and satisfaction, epistemic value, image, emotional value and functional value with regard to price and quality than students in the 1st grade. Students in the night class gave less scores to epistemic value and functional value with regard to price and quality than students in the day class. It is confirmed that the difference between groups by the period in school is in functional value with regard to need and satisfaction, image, emotional value, and functional value with regard to price and quality. And it is also revealed that these results are similar to the results of analysis by the grade. In conclusion college operators should not overemphasize that the department of Hotel culinary arts occupies the leading position of the culinary academic world in Korea and the firms of food service industry positively evaluate the department of Hotel culinary arts, and in order to cope with the rapidly changing environment of the culinary education consistent investment constant changes and of efforts should not be stopped. On one hand the teaching staff of the department of Hotel culinary arts should reconsider their original role, and need behavior and practice to fill their deficiency with steady efforts in terms of students' perceived service value. In addition the students of the department of Hotel culinary arts should not be shackled by the past tradition, should not take a pessimistic view of the present situation, should not take an optimistic view of the future, and should always cultivate their ability to provide for the future.

Effect of Co-firing PKS and Coal on Flame Structure in a Pulverized Coal Swirl Burner (미분탄 스월버너에서 PKS와 석탄 혼소가 화염 구조에 미치는 영향)

  • Flame structure of co-firing coal and palm kernel shell (PKS) was investigated in a pulverized coal swirl burner by particle image velocimetry (PIV). The pulverized coal swirl flame is operated with a PKS blending ratio of 10%, 20%, and 30%. For all operating conditions, flame structures such as internal recirculation zone (IRZ), outer recirculation zone (ORZ), and exhaust tube vortex (ETV) were observed. In the center of flame, the strong velocity gradient is occurred at the stagnation point where the volatile gas combustion actively takes place and the acceleration is increased with higher PKS blending ratio. OH radical shows the burned gas region at the stagnation point and shear layer between IRZ and ORZ. In addition, OH radical intensity increases for a co-firing condition because of high volatile matter from PKS. Because the volatile gas combustion takes place at lower temperature, co-firing condition (more than 20%) leads to oxygen deficiency and reduces the combustibility of coal particle near the burner. Therefore, increasing PKS blending ratio leads to higher OH radical intensity and lower temperature.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the college students' images of Nurses. Data were collected by open-ended questionnaire. 326 subjects were composed of nursing students and non nursing students who attended in universities and junior colleges at Pusan, Kyung-buk, and Chung-buk from April 30 to May 31, 1995. Collected data were analyzed by all researchers. Statements were categorized and endowed with Key meaning. The results were 1. Positive images of nurses were classified into 21 categories.   • For diagnoses of digestive organs, capsule endoscopes are widely used and offer valuable information without patient's discomfort. A general capsule endoscope which consists of image sensing module, telemetry module and battery is able to move along gastro-intestinal tracts passively only through peristaltic waves. Thus, it is likely to have some limitations for doctor to acquire images from the desired organs and to diagnose them effectively. As solutions to these problems, a locomotive function of capsule endoscopes has being developed. We have proposed a capsule-type microrobot with synchronized multiple legs. However, the proposed capsular microrobot also has some limitations, such as low speed in advancement, inconvenience to controlling the microrobot, lack of an image module, and deficiency in a steering module. In this paper, we will describe the limitations of the locomotive microrobot and propose solutions to the drawbacks. The solutions are applied to the capsular microrobot and evaluated by in-vitro tests. Based on the experimental results, we conclude that the proposed solutions are effective and appropriate for the locomotive microrobot to explore inside intestinal tracts.
