Purpose: Tomatoes, an important agricultural product in fresh-cut markets, are sometimes a source of foodborne illness, mainly Salmonella spp. Growth cracks on tomatoes can be a pathway for bacteria, so its detection prior to consumption is important for public health. In this study, multispectral Visible/Near-Infrared (NIR) reflectance imaging techniques were used to determine optimal wavebands for the classification of defect tomatoes. Methods: Hyperspectral reflectance images were collected from samples of naturally cracked tomatoes. To classify the resulting images, the selected wavelength bands were subjected to two-band permutations, and a supervised classification method was used. Results: The results showed that two optimal wavelengths, 713.8 nm and 718.6 nm, could be used to identify cracked spots on tomato surfaces with a correct classification rate of 91.1%. The result indicates that multispectral reflectance imaging with optimized wavebands from hyperspectral images is an effective technique for the classification of defective tomatoes. Conclusions: Although it can be susceptible to specular interference, the multispectral reflectance imaging is an appropriate method for commercial applications because it is faster and much less expensive than Near-Infrared or fluorescence imaging techniques.
In the car industry, welding is a fundamental linking technique used for joining components, such as steel, molds, and automobile parts. However, accurate inspection is required to test the reliability of the welding components. In this study, we investigate the detection of weld beads using 2D image processing in an automatic recognition system. The sample image is obtained using a 2D vision camera embedded in a lighting system, from where a portion of the bead is successfully extracted after image processing. In this process, the soot removal algorithm plays an important role in accurate weld bead detection, and adopts adaptive local gamma correction and gray color coordinates. Using this automatic recognition system, geometric parameters of the weld bead, such as its length, width, angle, and defect size can also be defined. Finally, on comparing the obtained data with the industrial standards, we can determine whether the weld bead is at an acceptable level or not.

Cracks on the asphalt road surface can affect the speed of the car, the consumption of fuel, the ride quality of the road, and the durability of the road surface. Such cracks in roads can lead to very dangerous consequences for long periods of time. To prevent such risks, it is necessary to identify cracks and take appropriate action. It takes too much time and money to do it. Also, it is difficult to use expensive laser equipment vehicles for initial cost and equipment operation. In this paper, we propose an effective detection method of road surface defect using ROI (Region of Interest) setting and cany edge detection method using UAV image. The results of this study can be presented as efficient method for road surface flaw detection and maintenance using UAV. In addition, it can be used to detect cracks such as various buildings and civil engineering structures such as buildings, outer walls, large-scale storage tanks other than roads, and cost reduction effect can be expected.
Purpose: A multispectral algorithm for detection and differentiation of defective (defects on apple skin) and normal Red Delicious apples was developed from analysis of a series of hyperspectral line-scan images. Methods: A fast line-scan hyperspectral imaging system mounted on a conventional apple sorting machine was used to capture hyperspectral images of apples moving approximately 4 apples per second on a conveyor belt. The detection algorithm included an apple segmentation method and a threshold function, and was developed using three wavebands at 676 nm, 714 nm and 779 nm. The algorithm was executed on line-by-line image analysis, simulating online real-time line-scan imaging inspection during fruit processing. Results: The rapid multispectral algorithm detected over 95% of defective apples and 91% of normal apples investigated. Conclusions: The multispectral defect detection algorithm can potentially be used in commercial apple processing lines.
QFN (Quad Flat No-leads Package) is one of the SMD (Surface Mount Device). Since there is no lead in QFN, there are many defects on solder. Therefore, we propose an efficient mechanism for QFN solder defect detection at this paper. For this, we employ Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) of the Machine Learning algorithm. QFN solder's color multi-layer images are used to train CNN. Since these images are 3-channel color images, they have a problem with applying to CNN. To solve this problem, we used each 1-channel grayscale image (Red, Green, Blue) that was separated from 3-channel color images. We were able to detect QFN solder defects by using this CNN. In this paper, it is shown that the CNN is superior to the conventional multi-layer neural networks in detecting QFN solder defects. Later, further research is needed to detect other QFN.
Post-earthquake building condition assessment is crucial for subsequent rescue and remediation and can be automated by emerging computer vision and deep learning technologies. This study is based on an endeavour for the 2nd International Competition of Structural Health Monitoring (IC-SHM 2021). The task package includes five image segmentation objectives - defects (crack/spall/rebar exposure), structural component, and damage state. The structural component and damage state tasks are identified as the priority that can form actionable decisions. A multi-task Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is proposed to conduct the two major tasks simultaneously. The rest 3 sub-tasks (spall/crack/rebar exposure) were incorporated as auxiliary tasks. By synchronously learning defect information (spall/crack/rebar exposure), the multi-task CNN model outperforms the counterpart single-task models in recognizing structural components and estimating damage states. Particularly, the pixel-level damage state estimation witnesses a mIoU (mean intersection over union) improvement from 0.5855 to 0.6374. For the defect detection tasks, rebar exposure is omitted due to the extremely biased sample distribution. The segmentations of crack and spall are automated by single-task U-Net but with extra efforts to resample the provided data. The segmentation of small objects (spall and crack) benefits from the resampling method, with a substantial IoU increment of nearly 10%.

Rubber o-rings are produced by conventional injection molding methods. In this case, products that are not normally molded are determined to be defective. However, if images acquired during image-based reading are read as original, there is a problem of poor accuracy. We have thus learned from convolutional neural networks using adaptive binarization and Convex Hull algorithms by extracting only rubber oring parts from the original images through pre-processing. During the test process, it was confirmed that the defect detection performance of the learning method applied pre-processing was better than the standard suggested.

Various methods have been proposed to determine the defect detection of welding bead, and recently sensor data and image data inspection have been steadily announced. There are advantages that sensor data inspection is highly accurate, and two-dimensional-based image data inspection is able to determine the position of the welding bead. However, when analyzing only with sensor data, it is difficult to determine whether the welding has been performed at the correct position. On the other hand, the image data inspection does not have high accuracy due to noise and measurement errors. In this paper, we propose a method that can complement the shortcomings of each inspection method and increase its advantages to improve accuracy and speed up inspection by fusing sensor data inspection which are average current, average volt, and mixed gas data, and image data inspection methods and is implemented as software. In addition, it is intended to allow users to conveniently and intuitively analyze and grasp the results by performing analysis using a graphical user interface(GUI) and checking the data and inspection results used for the inspection. Sensor inspection is performed using the characteristics of each sensor data, and image data is inspected by applying a morphology geodesic active contour algorithm. The experimental results showed 98% accuracy, and when performing the inspection on the four image data, and sensor data the inspection time was about 1.9 seconds, indicating the performance of software that can be used as a real-time inspector in the welding process.
This paper proposes computer visual inspection algorithms for various LCD defects which are found in a manufacturing process. Modular vision processing steps are required in order to detect different types of LCD defects. Those key modules include RGB filtering for pixel defects, gray-scale morphological processing and Hough transform for line defects, and adaptive threshold for spot defects. The proposed algorithms can give users detailed information on the type of defects in the LCD panel, the size of defect, and its location. The machine vision inspection system is implemented using C language in an embedded Linux system for a high-speed real-time image processing. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithms are quite successful.
A modified SQI method using magnetic leakage flux (MFL) signal for underground gas pipelines' defect detection and characterization is presented in this paper. Raw signals gathered using MFL signals include many unexpected noises and high frequency signals, uneven background signals, signals caused by real defects, etc. The MFL signals of defect free pipelines primarily consist of two kinds of signals, uneven low frequency signals and uncertain high frequency noises. Leakage flux signals caused by defects are added to the case of pipelines having defects. Even though the SQI (Self Quotient Image) is a useful tool to gradually remove the varying backgrounds as well as to characterize the defects, it uses the division and floating point operations. A modified SQI having low computational complexity without time-consuming division operations is presented in this paper. By using defects carved in real pipelines in the pipeline simulation facility (PSF) and real MFL data, the performance of the proposed method is compared with that of the original SQI.
