In this paper, a new Scene-based Nonuniformity Correction (SBNUC) method is proposed by applying Image Roughness-like and Spatial Noise cost functions on deep neural network structure. The classic approaches for nonuniformity correction require generally plenty of sequential image data sets to acquire accurate image correction offset coefficients. The proposed method, however, is able to estimate offset from only a couple of images powered by the characteristic of deep neural network scheme. The real world SWIR image set is applied to verify the performance of proposed method and the result shows that image quality improvement of PSNR 70.3dB (maximum) is achieved. This is about 8.0dB more than the improved IRLMS algorithm which preliminarily requires precise image registration process on consecutive image frames.

From the Beckmann's reflection model of wave incident, reflected light from a surface is known to have not only specular but also diffuse components. The specular component dominant a surface for a mirror-like surface is distributed on the almost the same area as the spot on the surface, but the diffuse component region dominant f3r a rough surface spreads scattered on the larger areas than the spot. Therefore, statistic parameters from the scattered light distribution are more meaningful in the diffuse region, while the magnitude of rather meaning in the specular region. In usual, there need two sensors to acquire two kinds of information: Photo-detector for light intensity magnitude and image sensor for light intensity distribution. But dual sensor scheme requires a beam splitter usually to feed light to each sensor, and moreover there is not a combination rule to relieve the different sensor characteristics. In this study a new method is proposed for acquisition of the dual information using only an image sensor. Specular region is established on an image area being distinguished from a diffuse component, and laser power is adjusted so that no pixel of the image sensor in the specular region is saturated. Simulation based on the light reflection theory and the experimental results are quite well matched, and thus the proposed method was proved to be very useful for mirror-like surface measurement.

The light pattern reflected from a machined surface contains some information like roughness and profile on the projected surface as expected in the Beckmann-Spizzichino model. In applying the theory into a real reliable measuring device, many parameters such as incident light power, wave length, spot size should be kept a constant optical value. However, the reflected light power is likely to change with the environmental noise, the variations of the light source, the reflectivity of the surface, etc. even though the incident light power is constant. In this study, a method for adjusting the incident light power to keep the reflected light power projected on a CMOS image sensor constant was proposed and a simple adjustment algorithm based on PI digital control was examined. Experiments verified that the proposed method made the surface roughness measurement better and more reliable even under variations of the height of light source.

This paper presents the principle and experimental results of a non-contact surface roughness measurement by means of screen projected pattern of lase beam reflected from a polished surface. In the reflected laser beam pattern especially from a fine surface like ground or polished one, light intensity varies from the center fo the image to its boundary as the Gaussian distribution. The standard deviation of a light intensity distribution is assumed to be a good non-contact estimator for measuring the surface roughnes, because the light reflectivity is known to be well related with the surface roughness. This method doesn't need to discriminate between the specularly reflected light and the diffusely reflected one, whereas the scattered laser intensity method must do. Nor it needs to adjust the change of light intensity caused by environmental lights or specimen materials. Reflected laser beam pattern narrowly spreads out in the vertical direction to tiny scratches on the polished surface due to abrasives. The deeper the scratch the more the dispersion, which means the rougher surface. The standard deviation of the pattern is nearly in proportion to the surface roughness. Measurement errors by this method are shown to be below 10 percent compared with those obtained by a common contact method. The inclination of measuring unit from the normal axis causes the measurement errors up to 10 percent for an angle of 4 degree. Therefore the proposed method can be used as an on-the-machine quick roughness estimator within 10 percent measurement error.

The SPM could image the most detailed microstructure of a sample in a wet and dry state by measuring the interaction between the atoms on the sample surface and the extremely sharp probe tip. The refined fibre exhibited large wrinkles formed by fibrillar bundles, the disintegrated fibres extensively showed “scale-like features”. By using the Non-Contact Atomic Force Microscopy (NC-AFM) and Contact Atomic Force Microscopy (C-AFM) including Phase Detection Microscopy (PDM) and Force Modulation Microscopy (FMM), it was possible to investigate surface topography, surface roughness and mechanical property (hardness or visco-elasticity) of fibre surface in detail. The PDM and FMM images showed that the disintegrated only fibre displayed uniform mechanical properties, whereas the refined one did not. The surface roughness of pulp fibres was higher in refined fibres than in disintegrated fibres due to the presence of external fibrils. These SPM images would be used to provide visual evidence of morphological change of a single fibre created during mechanical treatments such as refining, drying, calendering and so on.

As part of a research dedicated to the field evaluation of the durability of concrete subjected to freezing-thawing, this study analyzes the relationship between the surface roughness and the relative dynamic elastic modulus through image analysis. Four mix compositions with water-to-binder ratios (W/B) of 40%, 50%, 60% and 70% and without AE agent were considered to provoke early freezing. The basic physical properties of the mixes including the relative dynamic elastic modulus and the compressive strength were first evaluated experimentally according to W/B. Then, tests were performed to measure the surface roughness followed by photographs and SEM image analysis. The measured surface roughness tended to increase with larger number of freezing-thawing cycles regardless of W/B. The relative dynamic elastic modulus appeared to increase gradually with the number of cycles for the relatively denser mixes with W/B of 40% and 50%. Besides, the surface roughness increased only at rupture for the mixes with W/B of 60% and 70%. Moreover, the analysis of the photographs of the surface of the mixes with W/B of 40% and 50% revealed that the degradation progressed gradually from the surface with the freezing-thawing cycles. However, for the mixes with W/B of 60% and 70%, apparent change of the surface remained very insignificant until rupture at which damage like cracking could be observed. Consequently, the analysis of surface photograph or the measurement of the surface roughness presented some limitation in assessing the degree of freezing-thawing-induced degradation in case of relatively porous specimens. On the other hand, the photograph and surface roughness appeared to be sufficient for assessing such degradation for the mixes with W/B of 40% and 50%. Accordingly, the image of the surface and the surface roughness are potentially applicable on site for the assessment of freezing-thawing damages in relatively dense mixes.

Fractal dimension is the method to measure the roughness and the irregularity of something that cannot be defined obviously by Euclidean dimension. And the analysis method of this dimension don't need perfect, accurate boundary and color like analysis lot diameter, perimeter, aspect or reflectivity of wear particles or surface. If we arranged the morphological characteristic of various wear particle by using the characteristic of fractal dimension, it might be very efficient to the diagnosis of driving condition. In order to describe morphology of various wear particle, the wear test was carried out under friction experimental conditions. And fractal descriptors was applied to boundary and surface of wear particle with image processing system. These descriptors to analyze shape and surface wear particle are boundary fractal dimension and surface fractal dimension.

This study is about the effect from properties of coated paper and ink dispersion to the printed mottle. Ink receptivity would be expected that it is mainly effected by roughness of coated paper Because the transfer of ink can not be uniform with rough surface, it will cause the optical appearance such like printed mottle. And also it may be able to cause the printed mottle from uneven transfer of ink due to absorption property of based paper, depend on size degree, by using dampening in Off-set printing. Each different specific of surface and ink dispersion could cause printed mottle. Therefore this study was carried out by using densitometer and image analysis to show the interaction between properties of domestic coated paper and ink dispersion.

The purpose of this research is particle shape evaluation of granular soil and aggregate using Digital Image Process(DIP). DIP is very useful to measure the roughness and particle shape of aggregates. Couple of aggregates, like standard sand, two different crushed stones, and two different marine aggregates, have been employed. Shape factor of two different marine aggregates is ranged 0.35 to 0.54. Crushed stone I is that of 0.74 which is highly flat, but standard sand is elongated shape. Especially, two marine aggregate showed a big difference of width and length which meaned a long shape. There is any significant difference of elongation ratio and flakiness for each aggregate with different measuring system, like direct measurement of vernier calipers and DIP method. Within the limited test results, DIP is one of useful to get the particle shape of aggregate with limitation of measuring errors and to apply the particle distribution curve.

Image analyses for sheared joint specimens are performed to study asperity degradation characteristics with respect to the roughness mobilization of rock joints. Four different types of joint specimens, which are made of high-strength gypsum materials, are prepared by replicating the three-dimensional roughness of rock joints. About twenty jointed rock shear tests are performed at various normal stress levels. The characteristic and scale of asperity degradation on the sheared joint specimens are analyzed using the digital image analysis technique. The results show that the asperity degradation characteristic mainly depends on the normal stress level and can be defined by asperity failure and wear. The asperity degradation develops significantly around the peak shear displacement and the average amount of degraded asperities remains constant with further displacement because of new degradation of small scale asperities. The shear strength results using high-strength gypsum materials can not fully represent physical properties of each mineral particles of asperities on the natural rock joint surface. However the results of this quantitative estimation for the relationship between the peak shear displacement and the asperity degradation suggest that the characterization of asperity degradation provides an important insight into mechanical characteristics and shear models of rock joints.
