Since the region segmentation at high resolution contains most of viable semantic object contours in an image, the bottom-up approach for image segmentation is appropriate for the application such as MPEG-4 which needs to preserve semantic object contours. However, the conventioal region merging methods, that follow the region segmentation, have poor performance in keeping low-contrast semantic object contours. In this paper, we propose an image segmentation algorithm based on classified region merging. The algorithm pre-segments an image with a large number of small regions, and also classifies it into several classes having similar gradient characteristics. Then regions only in the same class are merged according to the boundary weakness or statisticsal similarity. The simulation result shows that the proposed image segmentation preserves semantic object contours very well even with a small number of regions.

Since the conventional image segmentation methods using mathematical morphology tend to yield over-segmented results, they normally need postprocess which merges small regions to obtain larger ones. To solve this over-segmentation problem without postprocess had to increase size of structuring element used marker extraction. As size of structuring element is very large, edge of region segments incorrectly. Therefore, this paper selectively applies structuring element of mathematical morphology to improve performance of image segmentation and classifies input image into texture region, edge region and simple region using averaged local variance and image gradient. Proposed image segmentation method removes the cause for over-segmentation of image as selectively applies size of structuring element to each region. Simulation results show that proposed method correctly segment for pixel region of similar luminance value and more correctly search texture region and edge region than conventional methods.
Although most image indexing schemes ate based on global image features, they have limited discrimination capability because they cannot capture local variations of the image. In this paper, we propose a new region-based image retrieval system that can extract important regions in the image using salient point extraction and image segmentation techniques. Our experimental results show that color and texture information in the region provide a significantly improved retrieval performances compared to the global feature extraction methods.
For the disadvantages of multi-scale geometric analysis methods such as loss of definition and complex selection of rules in image fusion, an improved multi-focus image fusion method is proposed. First, the initial fused image is quickly obtained based on the lifting stationary wavelet transform, and a simple normalized cut is performed on the initial fused image to obtain different segmented regions. Then, the original image is subjected to NSCT transformation and the absolute value of the high frequency component coefficient in each segmented region is calculated. At last, the region with the largest absolute value is selected as the postfusion region, and the fused multi-focus image is obtained by traversing each segment region. Numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithm can not only simplify the selection of fusion rules, but also overcome loss of definition and has validity.

In this paper, we proposed a method for enhancement of color images with sky regions. The input image is converted into HSV space and then sky and non-sky regions are separated. For sky region, saturation enhancement is performed for each pixel based on the enhancement factor calculated from the average saturation of its local neighborhood. On the other hand, for the non-sky region, the enhancement is applied only on the luminance value (V) component of the HSV color image, which is performed in two steps. The luminance enhancement, which is also called as dynamic range compression, is carried out using nonlinear transfer function. Again, each pixel is further enhanced for the adjustment of the image contrast depending upon the center pixel and its neighborhood pixel values. At last, the original H and V component image and enhanced S component image for the sky region, and original H and S component image and enhanced V component image for the non-sky region are converted back to RGB image.

In this paper, we propose the region-based image retrieval method using JSEG which is a method for unsupervised segmentation of color-texture regions. JSEG is an algorithm that discretizes an image by color classification, makes the J-image by applying a region to window mask, and then segments the image by using a region growing and merging. The segmented image from JSEG is given to a user as the query image, and a user can select a few segmented regions as the query region. After finding the MBR of regions selected by user query and generating the multiple window masks based on the center point of MBR, we extract the feature vectors from selected regions. We use the accumulated histogram as the global descriptor for performance comparison of extracted feature vectors in each method. Our approach fast and accurately supplies the relevant images for the given query, as the feature vectors extracted from specific regions and global regions are simultaneously applied to image retrieval. Experimental evidence suggests that our algorithm outperforms the recent image-based methods for image indexing and retrieval.

In tangible augmented reality (AR) environments for virtual prototyping, the user interacts with virtual products by manipulating tangible objects with his or her hands, but the user often encounter awkward situations in which his or her hands are occluded by augmented virtual objects, which reduces both immersion and ease of interaction. In this paper, we present how to resolve such hand region occlusion in order to enhance natural interaction and immersive visualization. In the AR environment considered, we use two types (product-type and pointer-type) of tangible objects for tangible user interaction with a virtual product of interest. Holding the tangible objects with his or her hands, the user can create input events by touching specified regions of the product-type tangible object with the pointer-type tangible object. We developed a method for resolving hand region occlusion frequently arising during such user interaction, It first detect hand region in a real image and refines the rendered image of the virtual object by subtracting the hand region from the rendered image, Then, it superimposes the refined image onto the real image to obtain an image in which the occlusion is resolved. Incorporated into tangible AR interaction for virtual prototyping of handheld products such as cellular phones and MP3 players, the method has been found by a preliminary user study that it is not only useful to improve natural interaction and immersive visualization of virtual products, but also helpful for making the users experience the products' shapes and functions better.
Document image layout analysis contains the process to segment document image into detailed regions and the process to classify the segmented regions into text, picture, table or etc. In the region classification process, the size of a region, the density of black pixels, and the complexity of pixel distribution are the bases of region classification. But in case of picture, the ranges of these bases are so wide that it's difficult to decide the classification threshold between picture and others. As a result, the picture has a higher region classification error than others. In this paper, we propose document image layout analysis method which has a better performance for the picture and text region classification than that of previous methods including commercial softwares. In the picture and text region classification, median filter is used in order to reduce the influence of the size of a region, the density of black pixels, and the complexity of pixel distribution. Futhermore the classification error is corrected by the use of region expanding filter and constrained conditions.
This paper takes the region segmentation in image processing and the semantic importance in an image analysis into consideration for digital image watermarking. A semantic importance for an object region, which is segmented by specific features, is determined according to the contents of the region. In this paper, face images are the targets of watermarking for their increasing importance, the use of frequency and strong necessity of protection. A face region is detected and segmented as an object region and encoded watermark information is embedded into the region. Employing a masking and filtering method, experiments are carried out and the results show the usefulness of the proposed method even when there are high compression and a synthesis as a case of copyright infringement.

In this paper an efficient morphologica algorithm for reducing gaussian and impulse noise in gray-scale image is presented. Based on the edge information the input image is partitioned into a flat region and an edge region, then different algorithms are selectively applied to each region. in case of impulse noise, MGR (morphologica grayscale reconstruction) algorithm with directional SE (structuring element) is applied to the flat region. For theedge region opening-closing (closing-opening) is used instead of dialation (erosion), so that the remaining noise around large objects can be removed. In case of gaussian noise, 5*5 OCCO(opening closing closing opening) and 3*3 DMF(directional morphological filter ) are used for the flat region and the edgeregion, respectively. In order to remove discontinuity at the edge boundary, the algorithm uses 3*3 OCCO around the edge region to reconstruct the final image. Experimetnal results have shown that the proposed algorithm achieves a high performance in terms of noise removal, detail preservation, and NMSE.
