  • The vergence control method is presented for a parallel-axls stereo camera (PASC) using a signal processing technique such as shift, (rotation), and scaling. The PASC is considered as the simplest one of binocular stereo cameras. However, its major limitation lies in the controllability of vergence since its left and right imaging sensors of CCDs are fixed. On the other hand, a horizontal-moving-axis stereo camera (HMASC) with movable imaging sensors is able to control the vergence by moving its CCDs horizontally. In spite of its vergence controllability, there is a major drawback in the implementation because of complicated mechanical structure and the additional cost. To overcome the vergence control problem of the PASC, an operational principle of the HMASC is applied to the PASC. To be specific, without any additional hardware the vergence control problem of the PASC is solved with the signal processing technique. Assuming the virtual displacement between CCD's, a disappearing part of acquired images is removed and the original image site is recovered via interpolation. Experimental results show that the vergence control between stereo images captured by the PASC it possible with an acceptable degradation of the image quality defending on the virtual displacement of CCDs.

  • Recently, interest in potential for estimating water quality using high resolution satellite images is increasing. However, low SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) over inland water and radiometric errors such as non-linearity of brightness value of high resolution satellite images often lead to accuracy degradation in water quality estimation. Therefore radiometric correction should be carried out to estimate water quality for high resolution satellite images. For KOMPSAT-2 images parameters for brightness value-radiance conversion are not available and precise radiometric correction is difficult. To exploit KOMPSAT-2 images for water quality monitoring, it is necessary to investigate non-linearity of brightness value and noise over inland water. In this paper, we performed brightness value comparison between KOMPSAT-2 images and IKONOS/GeoEye-1, which are known to show the linearity. We used the images obtained over the same area and on the same date for comparison. As a result, we showed that although KOMPSAT-2 images are more noisy;the trend of brightness value and pattern of noise are almost similar to reference images. The results showed that appropriate target area to minimize the impact of noise was $5{\times}5$. Non-linearity of brightness value between KOMPSAT-2 and reference images was not observed. Therefore we could conclude that KOMPSAT-2 may be used for estimation of water quality parameters such as concentration of chlorophyll.

  • Our problem is improvement of image quality because it is inevitable cell loss of image data when traffic congestion occurs. If cells are discarded indiscriminately in transmission of MPEG video data, it occurs severe degradation in quality of service(QOS). In this paper, to solve this problem, we propose two method. The first, we analyze the traffic characteristics of an MPEG encoder and generate high priority and low priority data stream. During network congestion, only the least low priority cells are dropped, and this ensures that the high priority cells are successfully transmitted, which, in turn, guarantees satisfactory QoS. In this case, the prioritization scheme for the encoder assigns components of the data stream to each priority level based on the value of a parameter ${\beta}$. The second, Number of high priority cells are increased when value of ${\beta}$ is large. It occurs the loss of high priority cell in the congestion. To prevent it, this paper is regulated to data stream rate as buffer occupancy with UPC controller. Therefore, encoder's bandwidth can be calculated renegotiation of the encoder and networks. In this paper, the encoder's bandwidth requirements are characterized by a usage parameter control (UPC) set consisting of peak rate, burstness, and sustained rate. An adaptive encoder rate control algorithm at the Networks Interface Card(NIC) computes the necessary UPC parameter to maintain the user specified quality of service. Simulation results are given for a rate-controlled VBR video encoder operating through an ATM network interface which supports dynamic UPC. These results show that dynamic bandwidth renegotiation of prioritized data stream could provided bandwidth saving and significant quality gains which guarantee high priority data stream.

  • A high performance LWIR(long wavelength infra red) zoom thermal imaging sensor using $480{\times}6$ HgCdTe(MCT) linear detector has been developed by ADD Korea. The optical system consists of zoom telescope having large objective about 190 mm diameter and optically well corrected scanning system. The zoom ratio of the telescope is 3: 1 and its magnification change is performed by moving two lens groups. And also these moving groups are used for athermalization of the system. It is certain that the zoom sensor can be used in wide operating temperature range without any degradation of the system performance. Especially, the sensor image can be displayed with the HDTV(high definition television) format of which aspect ratio is 16:9. In case of HDTV format, the scanning system is able to display 620,000 pixels. This function can make wider horizontal field of view without any loss of performance than the normal TV format image. The MRTD(minimum resolvable temperature difference) of the LWIR thermal imaging sensor shows good results below 0.04 K at spatial frequency 2 cycles/mrad and 0.23 K at spatial frequency 8 cycles/mrad at the narrow field of view.

  • A detector module measuring a depth of interaction was developed using silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) and two layers of scintillation crystal array treated with multiple reflectors. When reconstructing an image based on a signal obtained by using different types of reflector of each layer, the interaction positions of scintillation pixels and gamma rays could be tracked by utilizing the feature that all scintillation pixels were recorded at different positions. The bottom layer uses a specular reflector, and the top layer uses a diffuse reflector to differently process the size of the signal obtained from the SiPM. The optical grease was used to recude the sharp refractive index change between the layers of scintillator and the SiPM. The signals obtained from the 16 SiPMs were reduced to four signals using the Anger equations, and the images were reconstructed using them. All the scintillation pixels composed of the two layers appeared in the reconstructed image, which distinguished the layer where the scintillation pixels and gamma rays interacted. If the detectors, which measure the interaction depth of two layers using different reflectors, will be applied to preclinical positron emission tomography, the degradation of spatial resolution appearing outside the field of interest could be solved.

  • In spite of development in speech recognition technology, speech recognition under noisy environment is still a difficult task. To solve this problem, Researchers has been proposed different methods where they have been used visual information except audio information for visual speech recognition. However, visual information also has visual noises as well as the noises of audio information, and this visual noises cause degradation in visual speech recognition. Therefore, it is one the field of interest how to extract visual features parameter for enhancing visual speech recognition performance. In this paper, we propose a method for visual feature parameter extraction based on image-base approach for enhancing recognition performance of the HMM based visual speech recognizer. For experiments, we have constructed Audio-visual database which is consisted with 105 speackers and each speaker has uttered 62 words. We have applied histogram matching, lip folding, RASTA filtering, Liner Mask, DCT and PCA. The experimental results show that the recognition performance of our proposed method enhanced at about 21% than the baseline method.

  • PVM provides users with a single image of high performance parallel computing machine by collecting machines distributed over a network. Low communication overhead is essential to effectively run applications on PVM based platforms. In the original PVM, three times of memory copies are required for a PVM task to send a message to a remote task, which results in performance degradation. We propose a zero-copy model using global shared memory that can be accessed by PVM tasks, PVM daemon, and network interface card(NIC). In the scheme, a task packs data into global shared memory, and notify daemon that the data is ready to be sent, then daemon routes the data to a remote task to which it is sent with no virtual data copy overhead. Experimental result reveals that the message round trip time between two machines is reduced significantly in the proposed zero-copy scheme.

  • This paper is for investigation of the noise reduction effect all 20 filters by combining Low Pass Filter(LPF) 5 kinds, High Pass Filter(HPF) 4 kinds, Median Filter(MF) 11 kinds. Noise is added to reduce noise and minimize the quality degradation in medical imaging system. We also compared Peak Signal to Noise Ratio(PSNR), Mean Square Error(MSE) for all the combinations of different filters. As a result, noise decrease appeared in the LPF3*3#1 + HPF3*3#1 + Vertical3*1 of highest filter. We confirmed noise reduction effect by applying the proposed filter combination in many fields of medical imaging applications.

  • A new pixel circuit for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diodes (AMOLEDs), based on the polycrystalline silicon thin film transistors (Poly-Si TFTs), was proposed and verified by SMART SPICE simulation. One driving and six switching TFTs and one storage capacitor were used to improve display image uniformity without any additional control signal line. The proposed pixel circuit compensates an inevitable threshold voltage variation of Poly-Si TFTs and also compensates the degradation of OLED at low power supply voltage($V_{DD}$). The simulation results show that the proposed pixel circuit successfully compensates the variation of OLED driving current within 0.8% compared with 20% of the conventional pixel circuit.

  • The ray tracing method, which is one of many photorealistic rendering techniques, requires heavy computational processing to synthesize images. Parallel processing can be used to reduce the computational processing time. A parallel algorithm for the ray tracing has been implemented and executed for various images on transputer systems. In order to develop a scalable parallel algorithm, a processor farming technique has been exploited. Since each image is divided and distributed to each farming processor, the scalability of the parallel system and load balancing are achieved naturally in the proposed algorithm. Efficiency of the parallel algorithm is obtained up to 95% for nine processors. However, the best size of a distributed task is much higher in simple images due to less computational requirement for every pixel. Efficiency degradation is observed for large granularity tasks because of load unbalancing caused by the large task. Overall, transputer systems behave as good scalable parallel processing system with respect to the cost-performance ratio.
