  • Spontaneous combustion propensity of various coals of carbonization grade as a pulverized fuel of coal fired power plant has been tested from an initial temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$ by heated in an oven with air to analyze an self oxidation starting temperature. This tests produce a CPT(Cross Point Temperature), IT(Ignition temperature) and CPS(Cross Point Slope) by calculated as the slope of time taken a rapid exothermic oxidation reaction at CPT base. CPS show a carbonization rank dependence, whereby wood pellet has the highest propensity to spontaneous combustion of $20.995^{\circ}C/min$. A subbituminous KIDECO coal shows an CPS values of $15.370^{\circ}C/min$ whereas it of pet coke of the highest carbonization rank has $20.950^{\circ}C/min$. The nature of this trend is most likely a concentration of volatile matter and oxygen functional groups of coal surface that governs the available component for oxidation as well as surface area of fuel char, and constant pressure molar heat.

  • For the safety design and operation of many chemical process, it is necessary to know certain explosion limit, flash point and autoignition temperature(AIT) of handling substances. Also it is necessary to know explosion limit at high temperature and pressure. For the safe handling of MEK(methyl ethyl ketone), explosion limit at $25^{\circ}C$ and the temperature dependence of the explosion limits were investigated. And flash point and AIT for MEK were experimented. By using the literatures data, the lower and upper explosion limits of MEK recommended 1.8 vol% and 11.0 vol%, respectively. In this study, measured the lower and upper flash points of MEK were $-5^{\circ}C$ and $22^{\circ}C$, respectively. This study measured relationship between the AITs and the ignition delay times by using ASTM E659-78 apparatus for MEK, and the experimental AIT of MEK was $507^{\circ}C$. The new equations for predicting the temperature dependence of the explosion limits of MEK is proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with the literature data.

  • The extinction behavior and the unsteady response of augmented reduced mechanism(ARM) have been investigated by adopting an OPPDIF code and a numerical solver for the flamelet equations. By comparing the performance of the ARM based on Miller and Bowman's mechanism(MB-ARM) with that of the ARM based on GRI-Mech 3.0(GRI-3.0-ARM), it is identified that the MB-ARM is more suitable for the unsteady calculation because it is relatively less stiff than GRI-3.0-ARM during an ignition process. The steady results using the MB-ARM, which is modified to predict reasonably the extinction point of experiment, are in excellent agreement with those from full mechanism. Under the sinusoidal transient disturbances of scalar dissipation rate, the unsteady responses of the flame temperature and species concentrations using a modified MB-ARM show in very close agreement with those from full mechanism. It is presumed that above modified MB-ARM is very suitable for the unsteady simulation of turbulent flames because it gives not only a low computational cost but also a good prediction performance for flame structure, extinction point and unsteady response.

  • Detonation reaction in L.P.G./$O_2$ mixture gas has been investigated over the L.P.G. concentration range of 3∼45 volume%. The variation of detonation velocity with mixture ratio is very interesting as it shows and inflection point near at the stoichiometric ratio. This might be ascribed to the fact that the detonation reactions at fuel-rich condition and fuel-lean condition proceed via different mechanisms. The maximum detonation velocity of 2.65km/sec occurs not at stoichiometric ratio(${\phi}$=1) but at fuel-rich condition (${\phi}$=1.57). Assuming that a stable detonation wave must propagates with the constant velocity, The upper and lower limit of detonation were determined and found to be 40.0 and 3.40 L.P.G. volume% respectively. The shock-heating technique was also utilized for the measurement of self-ignition temperature onsetting a stable detonation wave at varous mixture ratios. The self-ignition temperature at stoichiometric ratio is $742{\pm}3{\circ}K$ and the self-ignition temperature increases as the mixture ratio deviates from the stoichiometric condition.

  • The aim of this study is to confirm the physicochemical property and hazard of thinner (012), which is a diluent of enamel paint used for floor coating for waterproofing and oil painting for the outer wall. The literatures of physicochemical property and hazard of thinner were surveyed and its physicochemical property were evaluated. And then, the inhalation toxicity of thinner affecting the central nervous system and reproductive organs in rats were examined by subchronic (6 h./day. 5 days/ week for 13 weeks) inhalation test. 1) According to the 13-week subchronic inhalation test, there were no significant changes in clinical test and body weight. However, a significant evidence of toxicity was observed in the hematological test and organ weight such as heart, kidney, liver and brain (p<0.01) in the 200 ppm and 1,000 ppm exposure groups in a dose response manner. In the histopathology analysis, there were no significant evidence of toxicity. Therefore, thinner was not classified as an organ targeted toxic agent. In case of Harmfulness, it could be classified as a chronic toxic agent 3($500 ppm/4hr, rat). 2) The reproductive toxicity such as extension of the period of estrous cycle, reduction of serum estradiol concentration and increase of frequency of the abnormal sperm was observed in the 1,000 ppm exposed animals. 3) The result of the physicochemical property of the test material showed that the specific gravity was 0.793, boiling point $155.8^{\circ}C$, steam pressure 2.1 kPa, ignition point $34.5^{\circ}C$, and spontaneous ignition point $280^{\circ}C$. The endothermic and exothermic values were 371.4 J/g and 159.1 J/g. respectively. The explosion limit was 214 mg/l. These data showed that thinner could be classified as an explosion agent level 1.2 and ignitive liquid agent 3 ($23-60^{\circ}C$) according to the notification No. 2008-1 of the Labor Ministry, "Classifying Standard of Chemical Materials."

  • The purpose of this study is to check the fire origin and cause of the fire by observing the shape of the flame propagation in air-conditioner indoor unit through the fire tests. We supposed that the flame is spread from the surroundings to the top of the air-conditioner and ignited on top of the air-conditioner with n-heptane. And then repeated this experiment twice under the same conditions. After the ignition, refrigerant filled in air-conditioner and lubricating oil exploded with large explosion and flame having high temperature and pressure belched out rapidly due to bursting refrigerant pipe linked air-conditioner between 734 seconds and 559 seconds. After result of checking the combustion residue we found that almost all of that was lost except a part of the evaporator, motor and metal. The position of short-circuit traces of wiring for the air-conditioner ignited itself is similar to that of fire damage by external flame. Therefore, we verified that it is not certain to determine the ignition cause and point by only the shape of the combustion residues.

Also it is necessary to know explosion limit at high temperature and pressure. For the safe handling of propane, explosion limit and autoignition temperature of combustion characteristics for propane were investigated. By using the literatures data, the lower and upper explosion limits of propane recommended 2.0 vol% and 10.0 vol%, respectively. Also autoignition temperatures of propane with ignition sources recommended $450^{\circ}C$ at the electrically heated cruicible fumace(the whole surface heating) and recommended about $960^{\circ}C$ at the local hot surface. The new equations for predicting the temperature and the pressure dependence of the explosion limits of propane are proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with the literature data.

  • Heat transfer oils are used in applications such as heating systems of chemical plant, refinery heat exchange systems, gas plant process, injection molding systems, and pulp and paper processing. These oils are extremely stable and resistance to thermal and oxidative degradation. In the event of a spill or accidental release of heat transfer oils, it can be ignite easily when there is an ignition source. This paper discusses the flammability and thermal stabilities of new and used oils. The flammability of the oils are assessed by measuring changes in flash point and auto ignition temperature. The thermal stability of oils are evaluated by the thermal screening unit ($TS^u$) and the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). From the experimental results, it is suggested to give fire hazard characteristics to safe precautions for the proper use and treatment of heat transfer oils.
