A Through-Bulkhead Initiation Module(TBIM) using CH-6 was designed. The TBIM works as the shock-wave generated by a donor charge transmits to the acceptor charge. The structural safety of TBIM housing was calculated via modeling analysis, and the ignition characteristic was proved by 10 cc closed bomb test(CBT). The reliability analysis was made using Probit method on the basis of CBT results. The optimal bulkhead thickness of TBIM which is the most important design parameter was determined using reliability analysis.

A cylindrical constant volume combustion bomb is used to investigate the combustion characteristics and to analyze the heat quantity of homogeneous charge methane-air mixture under various initial pressures, excess air ratios and ignition times. As the overall pressure increase, the values of maximum combustion pressure, maximum heat release rate and cumulative heat release have been increased. But it is not very meaningful to compare with some values such as maximum combustion pressure, maximum heat release rate and cumulative heat release for different overall pressure due to the different heat energy of supplied fuel. So the each value is needed to be compared with normalized value, which is divided by the entered fuel energy. To analyze the heat quantity, some definitions including the CHR ratio, the UHC ratio and the HL ratio are needed and are calculated. As the overall pressure increase, the CHR ratios and the UHC ratios have been decreased, while the HL ratios have been increased. The CHR ratio of 300 ms has the higher value than that of 10000ms, and the HL ratios of 300 ms have a lower value.
It is becoming increasingly difficult for engines using conventional fuels and combustion techniques to meet stringent emission norms. The homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) concept is being evaluated on account of its potential to control both smoke and NOx emissions. However, HCCI engines face problems of combustion control. In this work, a single cylinder water-cooled diesel engine was operated in the HCCI mode. Diesel was injected during the suction stroke($0^{\circ}$ to $20^{\circ}$ degrees aTDC) using a special injection system in order to prepare a nearly homogeneous charge. The engine was able to develop a BMEP(brake mean effective pressure) in the range of 2.15 to 4.32 bar. Extremely low levels of NOx emissions were observed. Though the engine operation was steady, poor brake thermal efficiency(30% lower) and high HC, CO and smoke were problems. The heat release showed two distinct portions: cool flame followed by the main heat release. The low heat release rates were found to result in poor brake thermal efficiency at light loads. At high brake power outputs, improper combustion phasing was the problem. Fuel deposited on the walls was responsible for increased HC and smoke emissions. On the whole, proper combustion phasing and a need for a well- matched injection system were identified as the important needs.

In order to investigate the effect of premixed gasoline, diesel fuel, and n-heptane charges on the combustion and exhaust emission characteristics in a direct injection (DI) diesel engine, the experimental studies are performed. The premixed fuels are injected into the premixing chamber that installed upstream of the intake port in order to minimize the inhomogeneity effect of premixed charge. The injection nozzle for directly injected fuel is equipped in the center of the combustion chamber. The air temperature control system is equipped in the intake manifold to examine the effect of air temperature. The experimental results of this study show premixing fuel is effective method to reduce the NOx and soot emissions of diesel engine. NOx emissions are linearly decreased with increasing premixed ratio for the three kinds of premixed fuels. The heating of intake air $(80^{\circ}C)$ reduced the deterioration of BSFC in high premixed ratio, because it promotes evaporation of premixed diesel droplet in the premixing chamber.
The gas motion inside the engine cylinder plays a very important role in determining the thermal efficiency of an internal combustion engine. A precise information of in-cylinder three dimensional complex gas motion is crucial in optimizing engine design. Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine is a combustion concept, which is a hybrid between Otto and Diesel engine. The turbulent diffusion leads to increased rates of momentum, heat and mass transfer. The in-cylinder turbulence flow was found to affect the present HCCI combustion mainly through its influence on the wall heat transfer. This study investigates the effect of piston geometry shape on the turbulent flow characteristics of in-cylinder from the numerical analysis using the LES model and the results obtained can offer guidelines of the combustion geometries for better combustion process and engine performance.

It is known that diesel engines have the disadvantage of high emission levels of NOx and PM. Therefore, many combustion strategies have been developed to reduce these harmful NOx and PM emissions in a diesel engine. Among these strategies, HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) and PCCI(Premixed Charge Compression Ignition) are the most popular as these can reduce NOx and PM simultaneously. However, when a single fuel like diesel is applied, it is difficult to control the combustion phase and this can lead to power reduction. In this study, premixed gasoline and pilot diesel were used to overcome the problems of controllability of the combustion phase and harmful emissions. We injected gasoline directly into the combustion chamber and the gasoline/air mixture was ignited with a pilot diesel fuel near the top dead center. The results showed that the combustion and emission characteristics of dual-fuel combustion were comparable to those of conventional diesel combustion. When we applied the dual-fuel PCCI combustion concept, more than 90 % of NOx and PM emission was reduced simultaneously without significant degradation of efficiency compared to conventional diesel combustion.

Recently the direct injection diesel engine is the most efficient one available for road vehicles, so this fundamental advantage suggests the compression injection diesel engine are a wise choice for future development efforts. The compression ignition diesel engine, with its bigger compression ratios if compared to the SI engine, offers a higher thermodynamic efficiency, also additionally the diesel engine with its less pumping losses due to the throttled intake charge as in a SI engine has higher fuel economy. But the largest obstacle to the success of this engine is meeting emission standards for Nitric oxides and particulate matter while maintain fuel consumption advantage over currently available engines. Thus its use should be largely promoted, however, diesel engine emits more Nitric oxides and particulate matter than other competing one. There has been a trade-off between PM and NOx, so efforts to reduce NOx have increased PM and vice versa, but trap change this situation and better possibility emerge for treating NOx emission with engine related means, such as injection timing, equivalence ratio, charge composition, and engine speed. The common rail direct injection system is able to adjust the fuel injection timing in a compression ignition engine, so this electronically controlled injection system can reduce the formation of NOx gas without increase in soot. In this study it is designed and used the engine test bed which is installed with turbocharge and intercooler. In addition to equipped using CRDI by controlling injection timing with mapping modulator, it has been tested and analyzed the engine performance, combustion characteristics, and exhaust emission as operating parameters.

In general, DI gasoline engine has the advantages of higher power output, higher thermal efficiency, higher EGR tolerance and lower emissions due to the operation characteristics of increased volumetric efficiency, compression ratio and ultra-lean combustion scheme. In order to apply the concept of stratified charge into direct injection gasoline engine, some kinds of methodologies have been adapted in various papers. In this study, a reflector was adapted around the injector nozzle to apply the concept of stratified charge combustion which leads the air-fuel mixture to be rich near spark plug. Therefore, the mixture near the spark plug is locally rich to ignite while the lean mixture is wholly introduced into the combustion chamber. The characteristics of combustion is analyzed with the variations of fuel injection pressure and load in a stratified -charge direct injection single cylinder gasoline engine. The obtained results are summarized as follows ; 1. The MBT spark timing approached to TDC with the increase of load on account of the increase of evaporation energy, but has little relation with fuel injection pressure. 2. The stratification effects are apparent with the increase of injection pressure. It is considered by the development of secondary diffusive combustion and the increase of heat release of same region, but proceed rapidly than diesel engine. Especially, in the case of high pressure injection (l70bar) and high load (3.0kgf m), the diffusive combustion parts are developed excessively and results in the decrease of peak pressure than in the case of middle load. 3. The index of engine stability, COVimep value, is drastically decreased with the increase of load. 4. To get better performance of DI gasoline engine development, staged optimizaion must be needed such as injection pressure, reflector, intake swirl, injection timing, chamber shape, ignition system and so on. In this study, the I50bar injection pressure is appeared as the optimum.

Recently, the important issues of gasoline engine are to reduce the fuel consumption and emission. Thus, many researchers are studying the technology to solve these problems. One approach of these issues is to achieve homogeneous charge combustion and stratified change combustion with various injection strategy. In this study, the combustion characteristics of DISI engine accrding to injection strategy were examined. The effect of injection timing on lean limit A/F were investigated using dual DISI single cylinder. The results show that the engine operation region of dual DISI type engine is larger than that of PFI and DISI type engine cases. Especially, late injection is very effective to extend the operation region more than any other injection timings. In addition, the results show that when the DISI injection ratio is increase, leam limit A/F is improved. It means that the dual injection system car meet with emission regulations and reduce the fuel consumption. Also, combustion pressure of dual injection system is much higher than PFI and DISI injection.

Dual fuel combustion strategy with di-methl ether (DME) and gasoline was tested in a compression ignition engine. Characteristics of combustion and emissions were analyzed with the variation of engine operating parameters such as fuel proportion, DME injection timing, intake oxygen concentration, DME injection pressure and so forth. Gasoline was injected into the intake manifold to form the homogeneous mixture with intake charge and DME was injected directly into the cylinder at the late compression stroke to ignite the homogeneous gasoline-air mixture. Dual fuel combustion strategy was advantageous in achievement of higher thermal efficiency and low NOx emission compared with DME single fuel combustion. Higher thermal efficiency was attributed to the lower heat tranfer loss from the decreased combustion temperature since the amount of lean premixed combustion was increased with the larger amount of gasoline proportion. Lower NOx emissions were also possible by lowering the combustion temperature.
