  • Wireless Sensor Network(WSN) has attracted great interest recently and the necessity of ZigBee has appeared to standardize and apply the upper layer specification based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard specification in industrial field. Currently, there are many studies about the IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee communication channel. And it is subject of interest to analyze the performance in various channel environments. In this paper, we propose channel models through the analysis of the IEEE 802.15.4 radio wave propagation characteristics in various channel environments. Also, we have analyzed the performance of the IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee for the standard of physical layer of 2.4GHz band in each channel environments.

A Detection Method of Interference from WiFi Network in IEEE 802.15.4 Network (IEEE 802.15.4 네트워크에서 WiFi 네트워크의 간섭 탐지 방법)

  • IEEE 802.15.4 network and WiFi network are installed to overlap each other and configured to use adjacent frequency bands in which case the communication service required by applications can not be guaranteed because of randomly increased frame transmission delay and frequent frame transmission failures at nodes in IEEE 802.15.4 network. In this paper, transmission delay model at IEEE 802.15.4 nodes and an experimental system to evaluate the interference from WiFi traffic are described, then elements for the evaluation of interference are measured with the analysis of their characteristics. A sequential method of using medium access layer and physical layer elements of IEEE 802.15.4 protocols is proposed to decide interference from WiFi network. With the proposed method, if an evaluation function having frame transmission failures and transmission delay as variables returns a value greater than a threshold, intensive measurements of wireless channel power are carried out subsequently and the final decision of interference is made by the calculated average channel power. Experimental results of the method show that the decision time is reduced with increased frequency of decision in comparison to an other similar method.

  • This paper proposes a technique for applying space-time block coding (STBC) - Alamouti scheme on Multiple Inputs Multiple Output (MIMO) system based on IEEE 802.15.4 standard. It is applied to IEEE 802.15.4 standard in $2{\times}1$ MISO and $2{\times}2$ MIMO systems. Simulation is performed using Matlab and the results are compared with conventional IEEE 802.15.4 approaches, Single Input Single Output (SISO) system and switching diversity $1{\times}2$ Single Input Multiple Output (SIMO) system. The simulations show that applied Alamouti scheme gave better Bit Error Rate (BER) performance compared to combined IEEE 802.15.4 with switching diversity and SISO system.

  • Times New RomanThe utilization of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the smart grid application can construct efficient and reliable electrical grid. IEC 61850 was adopted as the standard for smart grid exchanging the information required in an electric power utility. However, applying technologies like IEC 61850 using Ethernet to the automation of small distribution substation directly may cost more than the value of the small distribution substation itself. IEEE 802.15.4 technology attracts attention in the field of power utility automation because of low installation cost and ease of installation. Studies are conducted, which use IEEE 802.15.4 in less strict D1 small distribution substation. This study applied IEEE 802.15.4 to the small distribution substation and conducted performance evaluation using the actual equipment. This study determined the scope of application of IEEE 802.15.4 by conducting a comparative analysis of the message type in IEC 61850.

  • Coexistence of different wireless systems that share the 2.4 GHz ISM frequency band is becoming one of the most important issue. This paper presents a model of the interference that IEEE 802.11b affected by IEEE 802.15.4. The packet error rate (PER) of IEEE 802.11b under the interference of IEEE 802.15.4 is analyzed. The PER is obtained by using the bit error rate (BER) and the collision time. Further, this paper suggests a packet length to reduce the effect of the IEEE 802.15.4 interference and obtain a maximum throughput of the IEEE 802.11b. The analytical results are validated using simulation.

  • In this paper, a real-time transmission algorithm based on IEEE 802.15.4 is proposed. The superframe of IEEE 802.15.4 is applied to the transmission method of real-time mixed data (periodic data, sporadic data, and non real-time message). The simulation results show the real-time performance of sporadic data is improved by using the proposed transmission algorithm.

Worst-case Delay Analysis of Time-Triggered 802.15.4 for Wireless Industrial Environments

  • This paper focuses on worst-case delay analysis of the time-triggered IEEE 802.15.4 protocol to satisfy the industrial quality-of-service (QoS) performance. The IEEE 802.15.4 protocol is considered to be unsuitable for industrial networks because its medium access control method is contention-based CSMA/CA, which exhibits unstable performance with an unbounded delay distribution under heavy traffic. To avoid these limitations, this paper presents a time-triggered version of the nonbeacon-enabled network of IEEE 802.15.4 that relies on a time division multiplexing access (TDMA) method implemented in the application layer without any modification of specification. The timing analysis of this time-triggered IEEE 802.15.4 was executed, and the worst-case transmission delay was calculated. Based on this analysis, the time-triggered IEEE 802.15.4 is a promising alternative for wireless industrial networking.

A Lightweight Authentication Mechanism for Acknowledgment Frame in IEEE 802.15.4 (IEEE 802.15.4에서 확인 프레임을 위한 경량 인증 메커니즘)

  • In IEEE 802.15.4 (Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Network) specification, a successful reception and validation of a data or MAC command frame can be confirmed with an acknowledgment. However, the specification does not support security for acknowledgment frame; the lack of a MAC covering acknowledgments allows an adversary to forge an acknowledgment for any frame. This paper proposes an identity authentication mechanism at the link layer for acknowledgment frame in IEEE 802.15.4 network. With the proposed mechanism there is only three bits for authentication, which can greatly reduce overhead of device. The encrypted bit stream for identity authentication will be transmitted to device by coordinator within association process. Statistical method and simulation results prove that our mechanism is successful in handling MAC layer attack.
