  • Emission reduction in the cold start period of SI engines is crucial to meet stringent emission regulations such as SULEV Emissoin reduction is the starting point of the study in the which the variable valve timing (VVT) technology may be one promising method to minimize cold start emissions while maintaining engine performance. This is because it is possible to change valve overlap and residual gas fraction during cold start and idle operations. Our previous study showed that spark timing is another important factor for reducing cold-start emissions since it affects warm-up time of close-coupled catalysts (CCC) by changing exhaust gas temperature. However, even though these factors may be favorable for reduction of emissions, they may deteriorate combustion stability in these operating conditions. This means that the two variables should be optimized for best exhaust emissions and engine stability. This study investigated the effects of valve and spark timings in idle performance such as combustion stability and exhaust emissions. Experiments showed that valve timings significantly affected engine stability and exhaust emissions, especially CO and $NO_x$, due to change in residual gas fraction within the combustion chamber. Spark timing also affects HC emissions and exhaust gas temperature. Yet it has no significant effects on combustion stability. A control strategy of proper valve timing and spark timing is suggested in order to achieve a reduction in exhaust emissions and a stable operation of the engine in a cold start and idle operation.

  • We introduce a queueing system with general arrival stream and exponential service time under the N-policy, where customers may renege during idle period and arrival rates may vary according to the server's status. Probability distributions of the lengths of idle period and busy period are derived using absorbing Markov chain approach and a method to obtain the optimal control policy that minimizes long-run expected operating cost per unit time is provided. Numerical analysis is done to illustrate and characterize the method.

  • For the purpose of drawing a representative type of utilizing idle farmlands, this study collected and analyzed newspaper articles about cases of utilizing idle farmlands in the past decade using Internet search engines. Prior to this, it clarified a concept of idle farmlands to raise accuracy of searching articles, and selected NAVER as a search engine. It set "idle farmland", "abandoned land", and "utilizing" as basic search words in search option, and also set search period from 1st of January in 2004 to 31st of December in 2013. This study primarily searched 1,593 articles, and extracted 165 articles excluding overlapped and unrelated articles. Furthermore, it investigated extracted articles by date, media, headline, content of use, region(province), particular area(city and country), main agent, item and keyword 1, 2, 3 for proper use. This study also examined frequencies by year according to indoor and outdoor environment as well as regional differences through frequencies by regional groups and chronology. Furthermore, it drew a diagram of frequency flow of keyword 2, 3 with each keyword 1 as the central figure in order to draw various types of using idle farmlands. Through the diagrams, this study drew 9 using types such as (1) community service. agriculture type, (2) high income. agriculture type, (3) sightseeing. landscape. agriculture type, (4) livestock. agriculture type, (5) weekend farm type, (6) high income. woodland type, (7) ecology. landscape. woodland type, (8) agricultural work-study type, (9) ecological environment type.

  • In cognitive radios, secondary users can use the spectrum exclusively allocated to a primary wireless system if the secondary users detect the spectrum in idle states. Because the secondary users can utilize the idle state of the spectrum, the utilization rate of the spectrum can be improved. The idle states can be detected by using secondary users' sensing schemes. However, the wireless channel environment where secondary users perform the spectrum sensing is not very friendly to secondary users because the signal-to-noise ratio of the received primary signal is very low. Hence, cooperative sensing scheme where more than one secondary user take part in the spectrum sensing is generally used in cognitive radios. In this paper, we investigate the cooperative sensing performance for machine-to-machine communication devices operated by batteries with limited energy. In general, the energy consumed for the spectrum sensing increases as the length of the sensing period and the number of cooperative sensing nodes. Accordingly, even though the total amount of the consumed energy is the same, an energy allocation methodology how to distribute the energy to the sensing period and sensing nodes can achieve the optimum sensing performance, which is numerically analyzed.

  • In multi-server environment, We have to design a mechanism that selects appropriate servers for processing each service request while maximizing server throughput and minimizing average response of service requests. In this paper, we propose a job scheduling method for courseware delivery system using a idle computing resources on LAN. The proposed scheduling method propose an approach that uses client service request time, server available period and server load of requested service as guidelines of server selection. Comparing the our approach method to conventional one, experiments that the proposed approach provides better performance.

  • Purpose: This study suggests the multi-purposed emotional space that is one of the alternatives to reuse idle spaces in the city. Because human who is living in modern society begins pursue new contents and leisurely life all the time and live toward the period of high emotion with personal characteristics, architectural industry also need to change its planning and design to satisfy contemporary man and to adjust rapid social mobility. Method: For this study, the buildings where are located near Asia Cultural Complex (ACC) and leaved as idle spaces now that is used for important facilities are used to apply the multi-purposed emotional Space. Essential methodology and terminology were examined to estimate and construct the multi-purposed emotional space. Result: The multi-purposed emotional space provides that people aggressively request subjects to satisfy their emotional attractiveness as well as comforts and pleasures beyond the functional basic requirements in space. On the other words, it can be regarded as limited context to physical space responsive to social and environmental changes for the surrounding, and may maximize user experiences. Since emotions tend to be abstract and subjective while architectural space has pretty physical properties, this study attempts to integrate contrastive properties between emotional and architectural spaces to make a real object.

  • We propose a wireless positioning system using IC-IPDL method that exploits the modified-IPDL method and the interference cancellation techniques to improve hearability. In the proposed system, IPDL method is modified to maintain the transmission of CPICH for stability of CDMA network Simultaneously in mobile CPICH is cancelled out using the interference cancellation techniques for improving hearability. The simulation results showed that the proposed location system has a compatible performance to the standard IPDL method though CPICH exists during idle period.

  • In this paper, we propose a dynamic slot allocation scheme to improve the slot utilization rate in tactical multi-hop networks in which the channel condition varies due to node movements. The proposed scheme takes advantage of the fact that nodes that are more than three hops apart can use the same slot simultaneously. The frame is divided into two parts: the control period and the data period. To know the available slot information within two-hop distance, the node exchanges a slot allocation information with one-hop neighbors during the control period. The node can get the information on idle slots that are not used within two-hop distance but assigned already to other nodes that are more than three-hop away. The identified idle slot can be used by the node, which increases the slot utilization rate. The performance analysis results of the proposed scheme show that it increases the slot utilization rate sufficiently despite the overhead of the control period in the multi-hop networks of the future soldier system.

  • A capacity expansion planning problem with buy-or-lease decisions is considered. Demands for capacity are deterministic and are given period-dependently at each period. Capacity additions occur by buying or leasing a capacity, and leased capacity at any period is reconverted to original source after a fixed length of periods, say, lease period. All cost functions (buying, leasing and idle costs) are assumed to be concave. And shortages of capacity and disposals are not considered. The properties of an optimal solution are characterized. This is then used in a tree search algorithm for the optimal solution and other two algorithms for a near-optimal solution are added. And these algorithms are illustrated with numerical examples.
