  • The icebreaking research vessel ARAON had her second ice trial in the Arctic Ocean from July 16 to August 12, 2010. In this study, the ice loads measured during the “general” operation and “ice breaking” operation in ice-covered waters were analyzed and compared. Whereas the “general” operation stands for the voyage in the water partially covered by ice, the “ice breaking” operation involved substantial ice floes for the ice breaking performance test. Based on the measured data, comparisons of the relationship between the ship speed and ice load, and between the locations of strain gauges and ice loads were investigated. Peak stresses higher than 20 MPa were found. The longitudinal and vertical correlations between the measurement location and ice load were analyzed, and the probability of peak stress was calculated. As a result, the probability function for higher ice loads during both operation modes was expressed in an exponential and power forms.

  • The icebreaking research vessel, ARAON had her second ice trial in the Arctic Sea from 16th July to 12th August 2010. During the voyage, the local ice loads acting on the bow of port side were measured from 14 strain gauges. The measurements were also carried out in ice waters with various ice concentration ratio as well as the icebreaking performance tests. In this study, the ice loads measured during the 'general' operation in ice waters were analyzed. As a first step, the relationship between the location of strain gauges and the ice loads were investigated, and then the possibility for observation of higher ice loads was estimated based on the probability density function. The relationship between the ship speed and the ice load was also investigated. 718 peak stresses data higher than 20 MPa obtained from strain gauges array attached in longitudinally and vertically was analyzed. In general, the ice load increases as the ship speed increases in the low ship speed range, and ice load decreases as the ship speed is greater than a certain speed.

  • The icebreaking research vessel ARAON conducted her second ice trial in the Arctic Ocean during the summer season of 2010. During this voyage, the local ice loads acting on the bow of the port side were measured using 14 strain gauges. The measurement was carried out during icebreaking while measuring the thickness of the ice every 10 m. The obtained strain data were converted to the equivalent stress values, and the effects of the ship speed and ice thickness on the ice load were investigated. As a result, it was found that a faster speed produced a larger stress, according to the variation in the peak values below an ice thickness condition of 1.5 m. Meanwhile, the effect of the ice thickness on the ice load was not clear.

  • A comparative analysis was peformed on the operation cost at partial loads between ice storage systems with the two conventional control strategies, i.e., storage priority and chiller priority. The storage priority control is shown to be more economic for small cooling loads, while the chiller priority control is superior when the cooling load is as large as the design value. Based on this finding, a new control strategy is devised for an ice-storage system to minimize the operation cost at any cooling load. The new control strategy is found to be comparable to the chiller priority for large cooling loads, while it is more economic for small loads compared to the conventional control strategies. The practicality of the new control strategy is also confirmed through a performance test applying the new control strategy to an existing ice-storage system.

  • This paper focuses on the improvement of the influence coefficient matrix method for estimation of local ice load on the icebreaking research vessel ARAON. The influence coefficient matrix relates ice pressure on the hull plate to the measured/calculated hull strain/stress. Conventionally von Mises equivalent stresses representing hull stresses and ice pressure acting on the hull plate are utilized to assemble the influence coefficient matrix. Because of the three dimensional features of the ship-ice collision process, an enhanced method to assemble the influence coefficient matrix is derived considering ice loads in the X, Y, and Z direction simultaneously. Furthermore the location of ice loads acting on hull-plate may fall outside the measuring sensor area, and the enhanced influence coefficient matrix is modified to reduce the difference between the actual and the estimated ice loads by expanding the domain outward from the sensor area. The developed method for enhanced influence coefficient matrix is applied to IBRV ARAON during the 2019 Antarctic ice field test and the local ice loads in three directions are efficiently calculated compared to those by a conventional method.

  • This paper focuses on the estimation of local ice loads exerted from ship-ice interaction processes. The Korean IBRV ARAON was used to perform field ice trials during her 2015 Arctic voyage. During ARAON's general ice transit, a total of 72 channels of data from both strain gauges on the inner hull plates and those installed on the transverse frames of the ARAON's bow section structures were analyzed to calculate the local ice loads. The local ice loads estimated from the analysis of the shear strain data measured on the side frames were compared to those from the hull plate pressures.

  • The first Korean-made icebreaking research vessel "ARAON" had her second sea ice trial in the Arctic Ocean in Aug. 2010 after her first voyage to Antarctic Ocean in Jan. 2010 to gather various material and strength characteristics of sea ice. This is a detail report of ARAON 2010 summer Arctic voyage and this paper describes a standard test procedure to obtain proper sea ice data which provide basic information to estimate ice loads and icebreaking performance of the ship. The data gathered from sea ice in the Chukchi Sea and Beaufort Sea during the Arctic voyage of the ARAON includes ice temperature/salinity and the compressive/flexural strength of sea ice. This paper analyses the gathered sea ice data in comparison with data from the first voyage of the ARAON during her Antarctic Sea ice trial.

  • Ice load is one of the important design parameters for the construction of icebreaking vessels. In this paper, the design ice load prediction for the icebreaking vessels under normal operating condition in ice-covered sea is discussed. The ice loads under normal operating condition are expected from sea trials in moderate ice conditions. In this sense the extreme ice loads during heavy ramming or accidental collision are not considered. Current study describes the global ice load on the hull of the icebreaking vessels. Available ice load data from full-scale sea trials are collected and analyzed according to various ship-ice interaction parameters including displacement, stem angle, speed of a ship and flexural strength and thickness of sea ice. The ice load prediction formula is compared with the collected full-scale sea trials data and it shows a good agreement.

  • This study presents the analysis of relationship between ship speed and local ice load on the Korean Icebreaker ARAON. The relationship curves were made from the data obtained at two areas: the Arctic and the Antarctic; and for two operation condition: the icebreaking condition in sea ice trial and general operation in ice covered sea. The strain data were converted to the equivalent stress value, and the influence of ship speed on the local ice load was analyzed and compared each other. These analysis results are useful in working on a statistically valid hull design approach.

  • This paper focuses on a newly designed ice load formula based on the ARAON's 2016 Arctic field data in order to improve a structural design against ice loads. The strain gage signals from ARAON's hull plating were converted to the local ice pressure upon the hull plating using the influence coefficient matrix and finite element analysis. First, a traditional pressure-area relationship is derived by applying probabilistic approaches to handle the strains measured onboard the ARAON. Then, the local ice load prediction formula is re-analyzed after reviewing the ARAON's additional field data to consider information about the ship speed and thickness of the sea ice. It is shown that the newly developed pressure-area relationship well reflects the influence of other design parameters such as the ship speed and ice thickness in the prediction of local ice loads on Arctic vessels.
