This paper focuses on the improvement of the influence coefficient matrix method for estimation of local ice load on the icebreaking research vessel ARAON. The influence coefficient matrix relates ice pressure on the hull plate to the measured/calculated hull strain/stress. Conventionally von Mises equivalent stresses representing hull stresses and ice pressure acting on the hull plate are utilized to assemble the influence coefficient matrix. Because of the three dimensional features of the ship-ice collision process, an enhanced method to assemble the influence coefficient matrix is derived considering ice loads in the X, Y, and Z direction simultaneously. Furthermore the location of ice loads acting on hull-plate may fall outside the measuring sensor area, and the enhanced influence coefficient matrix is modified to reduce the difference between the actual and the estimated ice loads by expanding the domain outward from the sensor area. The developed method for enhanced influence coefficient matrix is applied to IBRV ARAON during the 2019 Antarctic ice field test and the local ice loads in three directions are efficiently calculated compared to those by a conventional method.
A field trial in an ice-covered sea is one of the most important tasks in the design of icebreaking ships and offshore structures. To correctly estimate the ice load and ice resistance of a ship's hull, it is essential to understand the material properties of sea ice during ice field trials and to use the proper experimental procedure for gathering effective ice data. The first Korean-made icebreaking research vessel, "ARAON," had her second sea ice trial in the Arctic Ocean during the summer season of 2010. This paper describes the test procedures used to obtain proper sea ice data, which provides the basic information for the ship's performance in an ice-covered sea and is used to estimate the correct ice load and ice resistance of the IBRV ARAON. The data gathered from the sea ice in the Chukchi Sea and Beaufort Sea during the Arctic voyage of the ARAON includes the temperature, density, and salinity of the sea ice, which was believed to be from two-year old ice floes. This paper analyses the gathered sea ice data in comparison with data from the first voyage of the ARAON during her Antarctic Sea ice trial.

This study presents the analysis of relationship between ship speed and local ice load on the Korean Icebreaker ARAON. The relationship curves were made from the data obtained at two areas: the Arctic and the Antarctic; and for two operation condition: the icebreaking condition in sea ice trial and general operation in ice covered sea. The strain data were converted to the equivalent stress value, and the influence of ship speed on the local ice load was analyzed and compared each other. These analysis results are useful in working on a statistically valid hull design approach.

The charge operation of an ice storage system has been analyzed in this paper. The thermal characteristics of major components of the ice storage system. i.e., the refrigerator and the ice storage tank are evaluated from performance tests on an existing ice storage system. Based on the measured data for thermal characteristics, a simulation is carried out for the charge operation and the effect of the refrigerator size on the system performance is investigated. The results indicate that the larger the refrigerator size for a given storage capacity, the lower the inlet temperature of the ice storage tank so that the lower the efficiency of charge operation. It is also found that there exists an optimal size of the refrigerator with which the ice storage at the end of the charge operation is maximized, but the complete charge is not possible even with the optimally sized refrigerator. This leads to the result that the design capacity of the storage tank should be larger than the required amount of cold energy for the daytime cooling considering the practically chargeable amount of cold energy during the nighttime. Where the cooling load sharing of the storage is 40%, the nominal capacity of an ice storage tank needs to be larger than the required storage amount by 30%.

This paper focuses on the estimation of local ice loads exerted from ship-ice interaction processes. The Korean IBRV ARAON was used to perform field ice trials during her 2015 Arctic voyage. During ARAON's general ice transit, a total of 72 channels of data from both strain gauges on the inner hull plates and those installed on the transverse frames of the ARAON's bow section structures were analyzed to calculate the local ice loads. The local ice loads estimated from the analysis of the shear strain data measured on the side frames were compared to those from the hull plate pressures.

A comparative analysis of an ice storage system has been performed on the operation cost for the four control strategies, i.e., chiller priority and chiller downstream, chiller priority and chiller upstream, storage priority and chiller upstream, storage priority and chiller downstream. Main components of the ice storage system are an ice-on-coil storage tank and a screw compressor chiller. With the simulation program, the operation cost has been evaluated from the economics of an ice storage system. It is found that the operation cost of the ice storage system is strongly dependent on the control strategy, i.e., chiller priority or storage priority, but less affected by the arrangement method, i.e., chiller upstream or chiller downstream. In case of the maximum load day, the control strategy with chiller priority and chiller upstream is supposed to obtain the reduction of operation cost. However, it is found that the control strategy with storage priority and chiller downstream is the best economical operation for most summer seasons except the maximum load day.

The strength assessment is the most important part at the design of ice-class propeller. Based on ice rules for ice-class propeller in IACS URI3 and FEM, the strength assessment method of ice-class propeller is established in this paper. To avoid the multifarious meshing process of propeller blade, an automatic meshing method has been developed by dividing the propeller geometry into a number of 8-node hexahedron elements along radial, chordwise and thickness directions, then the loaded areas in five cases can easily be calculated and identified. The static FEM is applied to calculate the stress and deformation of propeller blade. The fair agreements between the results of the present method and ANSYS/Workbench demonstrate its robust and the feasibility, and also the method is able to produce smooth gradient field. The blade stress and deformation distributions for five load cases are studied, and then the strength of the whole blade is checked.

It is necessary to estimate the cooling load of the next day for effective control of ice thermal storage system. In this paper, new methodology is proposed to estimate the cooling load using design parameters of building and predicted weather data. Only six input parameters such as sensible heat coefficient and constant, latent heat coefficient and constant, maximum and minimum temperature are necessary to obtain hourly distribution of cooling load for the next day. Two benchmarking buildings(hospital and research institute) are selected to validate the performance of the proposed method, and the estimated cooling loads in hourly and daily bases are calculated and compared with the measured data for E hospital. The estimated results show fairly good agreement with the measured data for both buildings.
A modern industrial society is presently considering not only cultural life but also health promotion to enhance the quality of life. There are many ways to enjoy the wellbeing life. Especially, ice-skating has been focused on as leisure sports with many remarkable advantages. Even though ice-skating was recognized as winter sport, nowadays people enjoyed skating are increased more and more because of indoor ice link. So, construction of indoor ice link has been boomed up. However, The techniques of ice link freezing system are insufficient because the ice link freezing system on the local construction was designed by advanced country techniques. So, this study has been conducted to analyze the air conditioning and refrigeration system in existing local ice link to suggest the design method of ice link.

Recently large capacity of electric equipment and increasing in atomic power generation are shown. One of the reason is shortage of the electric power supply for air conditioning load during summer. And every consumer is concerning about economical refrigeration and air conditioning system to decreases electric power consumption and decrease in global warming. For these necessities, ice making thermal storage system is required. Therefore, in this paper, the possibility of continuous slurry ice making using flowing organic water solution in cooled circular tube has been investigated. The experiments was carried out under some parameters of concentration and velocity of water solution, temperature of cooled tube wall, and control pressure in tube, As a result, four types of operating conditions in the pipe, that was supercooling, continuous ice making, intermittent ice making and ice blockage, were classified . And it was found that the critical condition for continuous ice making was acquired as a function of these experimental parameters.
