Selection of suitable ice class for ships operation is an important but not simple task. The increased exploitation of the Polar waters, both seasonal periods and geographical areas, as well as the introduction of new international design standards such as Polar Code, reduces the relevancy of using existing experience as basis for the selection, and new methods and knowledge have to be developed. This paper will analyse what can be the limiting ice thickness for ships navigating in the Russian Arctic and designed according to the Finnish-Swedish ice class rules. The permanent deformations of ice-strengthened shell structures for various ice classes is determined using MT Uikku as the typical size of a vessel navigating in ice. The ice load in various conditions is determined using the ARCDEV data from the winter 1998 as the basic database. By comparing the measured load in various ice conditions with the serviceability limit state of the structures, the limiting ice thickness for various ice classes is determined. The database for maximum loads includes 3-weeks ice load measurements during April 1998 on the Kara Sea mainly by icebreaker assistance. Gumbel 1 distribution is fitted on the measured 20 min maximum values and the data is divided into various classes using ship speed, ice thickness and ice concentration as the main parameters. Results encouragingly show that present designs are safer than assumed in the Polar Code suggesting that assisted operation in Arctic conditions is feasible in rougher conditions than indicated in the Polar Code.
Primarily, tower loads of a wind turbine arise from aerodynamic effect and a top head mass. But sometime asymmetric loads of rotor also affect on the tower loads. Especially ice formation on two blades out of three causes the asymmetric loads, because the ice formation on blades lead to large rotating mass imbalance. This rotating mass imbalance of rotor affects tower fatigue loads. So design load cases of ice formation on blade should be considered in the fatigue design loads of the tower according to GL guideline 2010. This paper describes the change of tower fatigue loads following increase of tower height in the condition of ice formation. Finally, the optimal operation strategy is examined in order to reduce tower fatigue design loads.
In summer 2010, field measurements of local ice loads were carried out in the Arctic Ocean using the Korean first icebreaking research vessel, ARAON. In some previous studies by the authors, several investigations for the data measured at 2010 including the relationship between the measuring points and ice loads, the possibility for observation of higher ice load and the relationship between the ship speed and ice loads were reported. During 10 days in August 2013, new field measurements were performed in similar waters of the Arctic Ocean using the same vessel, ARAON. The aim of this study is to investigate the statistical properties of 2013 measurements and compare results by two periods.
Ice storage systems are used to shift the peak load in day time into night time in summer. This paper describes a system simulation of partial ice storage system composed of an encapsulated ice storage tank, a screw compressor chiller, a heat exchanger, and a brine pump. For the system simulation, a one-dimensional model of ice storage tank is developed and validated by comparison with the performance data from measurements of an ice storage tank installed at a building. The control strategies considered in this study are chiller priority and storage priority being used commercially. The system is simulated with design cooling load of 600 RT peak load in design day and with off-design day cooling load, and the electric energy costs of the two control strategies for the same system size are compared. As a result of calculation, the energy consumption in a week for storage priority is higher than that for chiller priority control. However due to lower cost of night electric charge rate, energy cost for storage priority control is lower than chiller priority.
The icebreaking research vessel ARAON conducted her second ice trial in the Arctic Ocean during the summer season of 2010. During this voyage, the local ice loads acting on the bow of the port side were measured using 14 strain gauges. The measurement was carried out during icebreaking while measuring the thickness of the ice every 10 m. The obtained strain data were converted to the equivalent stress values, and the effects of the ship speed and ice thickness on the ice load were investigated. As a result, it was found that a faster speed produced a larger stress, according to the variation in the peak values below an ice thickness condition of 1.5 m. Meanwhile, the effect of the ice thickness on the ice load was not clear.
The electric power load during the peak time in summer is strongly affected by cooling load, which decreases the preparation ratio of electricity and brings about the failure in the supply of electricity in the electric power system. The ice-storage system and heat pump system etc. are used to settle this problem. In this study, the method of estimating temperature and humidity to forecast the cooling load of ice storage system is suggested. And also the method of forecasting the cooling load using neural network is suggested. For the simulation, the cooling load is calculated using actual temperature and humidity, The forecast of the temperature, humidity and cooling load are simulated. As a result of the simulation, the forecasted data is approached to the actual data.

The electric power load during the summer peak time is strongly affected by cooling load, which decreases the preparation ratio of electricity and brings about the failure in the supply of electricity in the electric power system. The ice storage system and heat pump system etc. are used to settle this problem. In this study, the method of estimating temperature and humidity to forecast the cooling load of ice storage system is suggested. The method of forecasting the cooling load using neural network is also suggested. The daily cooling load is mainly dependent on actual temperature and humidity of the day. The simulation is started with forecasting the temperature and humidity of the following day from the past data. The cooling load is then simulated by using the forecasted temperature and humidity data obtained from the simulation. It was observed that the forecasted data were closely approached to the actual data.
The decrease of summer peak electric load of our country is very important. The government is arranging a lot of support policies and statutes. etc. to decrease of peak electric load. And ice storage system is known as one of the alternatives. The purpose of this study is to collect basic data for operating characteristics to plan the most suitable operation of capsule-type ice storage system. The storaging tank is designed to take charge 40% of total cooling load in building, In operation condition the storage tank took charge 50%. Coefficient Of Performance of daily screw refrigerator is around 4.
The most important factor in the structural design of ships and offshore structures operating in arctic region is ice load, which results from ice-structure interaction during the ice collision process. The mechanical properties of ice related to strength and failure, however, show very complicated aspect varying with temperature, volume fraction of brine, grain size, strain rate and etc. So it is nearly impossible to establish a perfect material model of ice satisfying all the mechanical characteristics completely. Therefore, in general, ice collision analysis was carried out by relatively simple material models considering only specific aspects of mechanical characteristics of ice and it would be the most significant cause of inevitable errors in the analysis. Especially, it is well-known that the most distinctive mechanical property of ice is high dependency on strain rate. Ice shows brittle attribute in higher strain rate while it becomes ductile in lower strain rate range. In this study, the simulation method of ice collision to ship hull using the nonlinear dynamic FE analysis was dealt with. To consider the strain rate effects of ice during ice-structural interaction, strain rate dependent constitutive model in which yield stress and hardening behaviors vary with strain rate was adopted. To reduce the huge amount of computing time, the modeling range of ice and ship structure were restricted to the confined region of interest. Under the various scenario of ice-ship hull collision, the structural behavior of hull panels and failure modes of ice were examined by nonlinear FE analysis technique.
