Ice crushing occurs in many situations that involve a sliding frictional component such as sports involving ice-contact, ice interaction with ship hulls, and ice-on-ice sliding/crushing within glaciers and between interacting sea ice floes. Ice crushing-friction tests were conducted in the lab at $-10^{\circ}C$ using a set of acrylic ice-crushing platens that included a flat smooth surface and a variety of high-roughness surfaces with regular arrays of small prominences. The experiments were part of Phase II tests of the Blade Runners technology for reducing ice-induced vibration. Ice was crushed against the platens where the ice movement had both a vertical and a horizontal component. High-speed imaging through the platens was used to observe the ice contact zone as it evolved during the tests. Vertical crushing rates were in the range 10-30 mm/s and the horizontal sliding rates were in the range 4.14-30 mm/s. Three types of freshwater ice were used. Friction coefficients were extraordinarily low and were proportional to the ratio of the tangential sliding rate and the normal crushing rate. For the rough surfaces all of the friction coefficient variation was determined by the fluid dynamics of a slurry that flowed through channels that developed between leeward-facing facets of the prominences and the moving ice. The slurry originated from a highly-lubricating self-generating squeeze film of ice particles and melt located between the encroaching intact ice and the surfaces.

Sea ice is the main factor affecting the safety of the Arctic engineering. However, traditional numerical methods derived from classical continuum mechanics have difficulties in resolving discontinuous problems like ice damage. In this paper, a non-local, meshfree numerical method called "peridynamics", which is based on integral form, was applied to simulate the interaction between level ice and a cylindrical, vertical, rigid structure at different velocities. Ice in the simulation was freshwater ice and simplified as elastic-brittle material with a linear elastic constitutive model and critical equivalent strain criterion for material failure in state-based peridynamics. The ice forces obtained from peridynamic simulation are in the same order as experimental data. Numerical visualization shows advantages of applying peridynamics on ice damage. To study the repetitive nature of ice force, damage zone lengths of crushing failure were computed and conclude that damage zone lengths are 0.15-0.2 times as ice thickness.

The two most important tasks of icebreakers are first to secure a sailing route by breaking the thick sea ice and second to sail efficiently herself for purposes of exploration and transportation in the polar seas. The resistance of icebreakers is a priority factor at the preliminary design stage; not only must their sailing efficiency be satisfied, but the design of the propulsion system will be directly affected. Therefore, the performance of icebreakers must be accurately calculated and evaluated through the use of model tests in an ice tank before construction starts. In this paper, a new procedure is developed, based on model tests, to estimate a ship's ice breaking resistance during continuous ice-breaking in ice. Some of the factors associated with crushing failures are systematically considered in order to correctly estimate her ice-breaking resistance. This study is intended to contribute to the improvement of the techniques for ice resistance prediction with ice breaking ships.
Regrading the development of offshore natural gas field near Sakhalin Island which is an ice-infested area, this study aims to estimate the dynamic ice load for construction of offshore structures operating in this region. In this paper the design ice load and dynamic responses of a slender Arctic structure upon continuous ice movement are sutdied. Crushing agter a certain elastic deformation is assumed as a primary failure mechanism at the contact zone between semi-infinite level ice edge and the face of structure. Dynamic interaction forces are calculated using a modified Korzhavin's equation and a two-dimensional ice-structure interaction model is adopted. To verify the numerical model, dynamic analysis is performed for on of the Baltic Sea channel markers whose response patterns were presiously observed.

This paper presents the semi-analytical ice load calculation methods that are useful to simulate the ice-breaking process. Since the semi-analytical methods rely on the previously developed closed form equations or numerical analysis results, the user's exact understanding for the equations must be supported in order to use the methods properly. In this study, various failure modes of ice such as local crushing, in-plane splitting failure, out-of-plane bending failure and radial or circumferential cracking with rotation of the broken ice floe are considered. Based on the presented methods, the fracture modes were evaluated according to the size and thickness of ice. In addition, time series analysis for the ice-breaking process was performed on several ice conditions and the results were analyzed.

Understanding of 'spatial' pressure distribution is required to determine design loads on local structures, such as plating and framing. However, obtaining a practical 'spatial' pressure distribution is a hard task due to the sensitivity of the data acquisition frequency and resolution. High-resolution Pessure-Idicating Flm (PIF) was applied to obtain pressure distribution and pressure magnitude using stepped crushing method. Different types of PIF were stacked at each test to creating a pressure distribution plot at specific time steps. Two different concepts of plotting 'spatial' pressure-area curve was introduced and evaluated. Diverse unit pixel size was chosen to investigate the effect of the resolution in data analysis. Activated area was not significantly affected by unit pixel size; however, total force was highly sensitive.
In the present paper, the overall state of the arts of ice mechanics which is the most typical research topic of the artic engineering field was studied. And also, ice loads genrated by ice-structure interaction were estimated using numerical approach. The effects of viscous property of ice sheets to the ice load were investigated. The time dependent deformation behaviors of ice was modeled by visco-plastic problem using the finite element formalism. Constitutive model representing the material properties of ice was idealized by comblned rheological model with Maxwell and Voigt models. Numerical calculations for the bending and crushing behavior of ice sheet which are the most typical interaction modes between ice sheets and structures were carried out. The time dependent viscous behaviors of ice sheets interaction forces acting on structures were analyzed and the results were studied in detail.
Ice loads can determined by many factors like ice properies and dimension, velocity and type of structures. The magnitude of ice load varies with the failure mode which can be predicted by failure maps if the aspect ratio and strain rate are known. To reduce the ice force, various types of structure have been investigated and it is now known that the identor shape plays an important role in reducing ice load on Arctic offshoe structures. The conical and wedge structures are good applied examples in the Arctic region. In this study, ice forces on single wedge indentors are investigated for crushing failure mode. The ice loads on wedged indentors are compared with those on cylindrical structures. Also the concept of "ice annual"is introduced to verify the ice loads to multi and single wedge structures.tructures.

This paper presents 2D numerical modeling to calculate ship-ice interactions that occur when an icebreaker advances into ice-covered water. The numerical model calculates repeated icebreaking of an ice plate and removal of small ice floes. The icebreaking of the ice plate is calculated using a ship-ice contact detection technique and fluid-structural interaction of ice plate bending behavior. The ship-ice interactions in small ice floes are calculated using a physically based modeling with 3DOF rigid body equations. The ice plate is broken in crushing, bending, and splitting mode. The ice floes drift by wind or current and by the force induced by the ship-ice interaction. The time history of ice force and ice floe distribution when an icebreaker advances into the ice-covered water are obtained numerically. Numerical results demonstrate that the time history of ice force and distribution of ice floes (ice channel width) depend on the ice floe size, ship motion and ice drifting by wind or current. It is shown that the numerical model of ship maneuvering in realistic ice conditions is necessary to obtain precise information about the ship in ice-covered water. The proposed numerical model can be useful to provide data of a ship operating in ice-covered water.
