  • Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) by isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS) interfaced with gas chromatography (GC) is a state of the art analytical technique for stable isotopes in earth sciences, environmental sciences and forensics. Since early 1990s, GC-IRMS has been widely used to investigate the authenticity of food in forensic science and to trace the sources of organic contaminants in environmental science. In Korea, a GC-IRMS was firstly installed at the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI) in early 2005. In this study, we introduce the GC-IRMS of the KBSI shortly to stimulate various isotope-related researches of Korea, and report preliminary CSIA results for BTEX of different manufacturers.

  • Preferences of users on movies are observables of various factors that are related with user attributes and movie features. For movie recommendation, analysis methods for relation among users, movies, and preference patterns are mandatory. As a relational analysis tool, we focus on the Infinite Relational Model (IRM) which was introduced as a tool for multiple concept search. We show that IRM-based co-clustering on preference patterns and movie descriptors can be used as the first tool for movie recommender methods, especially content-based filtering approaches. By introducing a set of well-defined tag sets for movies and doing three-way co-clustering on a movie-rating matrix and a movie-tag matrix, we discovered various explainable relations among users and movies. We suggest various usages of IRM-based co-clustering, espcially, for incremental and dynamic recommender systems.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to monitor the outcomes of periapical surgery in periapically infected tooth with or without retrograde filling materials (MTA or IRM). Patients and Methods: A total of 85 teeth in 63 patients were included in the study between November 2004 and August 2008. Randomly, MTA or IRM was used as a retrograde filling material or only apical resection without retrograde filling. Teeth with advanced periodontal bone loss or presence of root fracture were excluded from the study. The patients were subjected to a minimum follow-up period of 12 months, with a mean of 17.1 months. Results: Successful healing was observed in 83.3% of the MTA-treated teeth, 80% of the IRM-treated teeth and 75% of the teeth which was not retrograde filling. Doubtful healing was seen 9.3% (MTA), 13.3% (IRM), 12.5% (no retro-filling). The success rate of upper incisors (92%) was higher than lower lincisor and molars (66.7% and 50%, respectively). Conclusion: In this study, periapical surgery including retrograde filling improves the prognosis. And, no statistically significant differences were found between retrograde filling materials (MTA or IRM).

  • IT investment is continuously increasing. Its outcome, however, is not accomplished as easily as originally expected. There have a variety of efforts to overcome this dilemma. In public sector, information resource management (IRM) was suggested as one of the most effective approach for information & IT management. Accordingly, United States has been incorporating the IRM principles into information-related laws since 1980s. However, such efforts were insufficient in Korea. In this study we attempt to compare our information-related laws with United States laws with respect to major components of IRM. Based on this finding, we go one-step further to suggest ways to arrange a new legislation where the IRM would be a foundation for information & IT management.

  • In this paper we have proposed a new architecture of DQ-IRM(Double-Quadrature Image Rejection Mixer) for image rejection in the low-IF receiver. It consist of a frequency-tunable RF PPF(Poly Phase Filter) and the quadrature mixers. The conventional DQ-IRM generates the quadrature RF signals for the RF wide band at once. But the proposed DQ-IRM with the frequency-tuable RF PPF generates the quadrature RF signals for the narrow band of 2~3 channels bandwidth, which is partitioned from the RF wide band. We designed the CMOS RF tuner for T-DMB(Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) with the proposed 3rd DQ-IRM using a 0.18um CMOS technology and verified the performances of the designed receiver such as the image rejection ratio, the noise figure and the power consumption. The overall NF of the RF tuner is about 1.26 dB and the image reject ratio is about 51 dB. The power consumption is 55.8 mW at 1.8 V supply voltage. The chip area is $3.0{\times}2.5mm^2$.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the sealing abilities of four endodontic temporary restorative materials using a methylene blue dye penetration test under dynamic loading. Standardized access cavities were prepared in forty-four intact human permanent molar teeth, and the cavities were restored with Caviton, MD-Temp, IRM, or ZOE. After thermocycling, an intermittent load of 98 N at 1 Hz was applied for 1,000 cycles to the long axis of the functional cusp of each of the teeth, which were immersed in a 1% methylene blue solution. The teeth were split in half, and the linear depth of dye penetration was evaluated according to the criteria. The results were analyzed using one-way ANOVA (p = 0.05) and Duncan's multiple range test. The results demonstrated that Caviton and MD-Temp showed significantly lower microleakage than IRM and ZOE. It was concluded that Caviton and MD-Temp exhibited better sealing ability than IRM and ZOE under dynamic loading.

  • Purpose: This study assessed the association between eye symptoms (enophthalmos or diplopia) and site of damage, volume, deviated inferior rectus muscle (IRM) and type of fracture with computed tomography (CT). The intent is to anticipate the prognosis of orbital trauma at initial diagnosis. Methods: Forty-five patients were diagnosed with fractures of the inferior wall of one orbit. Fracture area, volume of displaced tissue, deviated IRM, and type of fracture were evaluated from coronal CT by one investigator. The association of those variables with the occurrence of eye symptoms (diplopia and enophthalmos) was assessed. Results: Of 45 patients, 27 were symptom-free (Group A) and 18 had symptoms (Group B) of enophthalmos and/or diplopia. In Group B, 12 had diplopia, one was enophthalmos, and five had both. By CT measurement, group A mean area was $192.6mm^2$ and the mean volume was $673.2mm^3$. Group B area was $316.2mm^2$ and volume was $1,710.6mm^3$. The volume was more influential on symptom occurrence. Each patient was categorized into four grades depending on the location of IRM. Symptom occurrence and higher grade were associated. Twenty-six patients had trap-door fracture (one side, attached to the fracture), and 19 had punched-out fracture (both sides detached). The punched-out fracture was more strongly associated with symptoms and had statistically significantly higher area and volume. Conclusion: In orbital trauma, measurement of fracture area and volume, evaluation of the deviated IRM and classification of the fracture type by coronal CT can effectively predict prognosis and surgical indication.
