Steward Observatory has a rich and diverse program of investigations, with significant groups working on star and planet formation and astrobiology, galaxy and quasar formation and evolution, technology for adaptive optics and interferometry, computational astrophysics, and effectiveness of educational practice. To support this work, Steward operates and offers a range of observational and other facilities, including the Large Binocular Telescope, the MMT, the Magellan Telescopes, the Arizona Radio Observatory, and a suite of 1- and 2-m class telescopes. A special opportunity for IR astronomy exists with Arizona now running UKIRT. Steward Observatory astronomers would welcome the opportunity to form genuine scientific collaborations that are mutually beneficial for high-impact projects and improving the observing facilities.
We have used a mid-IR (mid-infrared) continuous-wave (cw) optical parametric oscillator (OPO), developed previously and described in Ref. 12, to build a performance-evaluation setup for a mid-IR spectrometer. The used CW OPO had a wavelength tuning range of $ 2.5-3.6{\mu}m$ using a pump laser with a wavelength of 1064 nm and a fan-out MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) nonlinear crystal in a concentric cavity design. The OPO was combined with a near-IR integrating sphere and a Fourier-transform IR optical spectrum analyzer to build a performance-evaluation setup for mid-IR spectrometers. We applied this performance-evaluation setup to evaluating a mid-IR spectrometer developed domestically, and demonstrated the capability of evaluating the performance, such as spectral resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, spectral stray light, and so on, based on this setup.

Ternary $SrO-B_2O_3-SiO_2$ glasses were fabricated as a function of R(${\equiv}SrO\;mole%/B_2O_3\;mole%$) and K(${\equiv}SiO_2\;mole%/B_2O_3\;mole%$). The structures of these glasses were investigated through Infrared transmittance, vicker's hardness, and refractive index. The results indicated : First, in the infrared transmittance spectra, when R increased, the intensities of the absorption bands around $1200{\sim}1600cm^{-1}$ resulting from the B-O stretching vibration bond in the symmetrical trigonal $BO_3$ units decreased, and these of the absorption bands around $800{\sim}1200cm^{-1}$ caused by the B-O stretching vibration bond of the tetrahedral $BO_4$ units varied. Also, the intensities of the absorption bands for the B-O stretching vibration bond in trigonal $BO_3$ units increased and these of the bands for B-O stretching vibration bond in tetrahedral $BO_4$ units decreased as K increased. Second, the increase and the decrease of vicker's hardness values for these glasses depended on the fraction of $BO_4$ units and it of $BO_3$ units, respectively. The refractive index of these glasses mostly depended on the SrO contents and only slightly depended on the fraction of $BO_4$ and $BO_3{^-}$ units.
Purpose: This study is to prepare tintable hard coatings for plastic lenses and to evaluate spectroscopic and surface characteristic for these coatings. Methods: These coatings had been prepared by the sol-gel method using TEOS, MTMS and GPTS. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, infrared (IR) spectroscopy and UV/VIS spectroscopy have been used to investigate the optical and structural characteristics of the coatings. Results: Tint ability of this coating was about 2 times higher than general hard coatings. The lenses applied by tintable hard coatings showed excellent adhesion, abrasion resistance, hot water resistance, and chemical resistance. Pencil hardness was 5H and the surface of coatings was smooth and free of cracks. Conclusions: This hard coating system for plastic lenses offered a hard and stable surface that could be tinted.

The vortex-driven magnetization process of micron-sized, exchange-coupled square elements with composition of $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$ (12 nm)/$Ir_{20}Mn_{80}$ (5 nm) is investigated. The exchange-bias is introduced by field-cooling through the blocking temperature (TB) of the system, whereby Landau-shaped vortex states of the $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$ layer are imprinted into the $Ir_{20}Mn_{80}$. In the case of zero-field cooling, the exchange-coupling at the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic interface significantly enhances the vortex stability by increasing the nucleation and annihilation fields, while reducing coercivity and remanence. For the field-cooled elements, the hysteresis loops are shifted along the cooling field axis. The loop shift is attributed to the imprinting of displaced vortex state of $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$ into $Ir_{20}Mn_{80}$, which leads to asymmetric effective local pinning fields at the interface. The asymmetry of the hysteresis loop and the strength of the exchange-bias field can be tuned by varying the strength of cooling field. Micromagnetic modeling reproduces the experimentally observed vortex-driven magnetization process if the local pinning fields induced by exchange-coupling of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers are taken into account.
The design and implementation of a radiative temperature measurement system for a flash light are carried out. Since a massive amount of energy is emitted within a very short time, it is impossible to measure the temperature of a flash with a conventional method. It is also irrelevant to measure one with an optical noncontact method. In this paper, a radiative temperature measurement system using the ratio of spectral radiances over mid- and long-wavelength infrared (IR) is designed and implemented. The implemented system utilizes optical bandpass filters to divide the wavelengths within the mid- and long-wavelength IR ranges, and pyroelectric IR detectors to measure the incident optical power of each wavelength-divided channel. It is shown that the measured radiative temperature of a flash is in the range of 1393 to 1455 K. This temperature-measurement system can be utilized to obtain information about the spectral radiance of a flash as a light source, which is of crucial importance to approaching the modeling and simulation of the various effects of a flash.
The slotted type of hollow copper cathode was constructed and tested for its geometric stability and usability for laser operation at 780nm. The peak output power of copper ion laser emission was measured for different operating conditions. The IR-laser power was dependent on the parameters of the geometry of the hollow cathodes, discharge current and gas fillings. The peak power decreased with increasing neon pressure over 60%. One reason for this decrease in output power may be conjectured as hier due to the decreasing population of the upper laser level. The copper ion laser transition at 780 nm populated at the 5p level. The hollow cathode copper ion laser is operated in He and Ne mixture by electric discharge excitation and could be operated for more than 100 hours with only a 35% drop in the output power(2.8mW cw for 9.6cm active length).

Spectral irradiance measurement system was developed to measure the spectral irradiance of optical sources in the wavelength range from 250[nm] to 1600[nm]. Our system is composed of source system, fore-optics, monochromator system, optical detector system, and automatic control system. Optical detector system with PMT, Si, InGaAs, and IR enhanced InGaAs detectors is used to measure the wide spectrum of optical sources in ultraviolet visible, and infrared wavelength regions. Spectral irradiance of the 1[kW] quartz-halogen tungsten lamp was measured and compared in the wavelength range from 250[nm] to 1600[nm]. The differences between our results and those reported by NIST are below 3[%], 3.5[%], and 5[%] in the wavelength range of 450∼700[nm], 700∼1600[nm], 250∼400[nm], respectively.

Machining technique for optical crystals with single point diamond turning tool is reported in this paper. The main factors influencing the machined surface quality are studied and regularities of machining process are drawn. Optical crystals have been known to more and more important applications in the field of modern optics. Ge is more brittle material of poor machinability. The traditional machining method is polishing which has many shortcomings such as low production efficiency, poor ability to be automatically controlled and edge effect of the workpiece. The purpose of our research is to find the optimum machining conditions for ductile cutting of Ge and apply the SPDTM technique to the manufacturing of ultra precision optical components of Ge. As a result, the surface roughness is the best when cutting speed is 180m/min, feed rate is 2mm/min, depth of cut is $0.5{\mu}m$ and nose radius of tool is 0.8mm.
