  • Two different imide oligomers(6FDA-ODA/APA and 6FDA-MDA/MA) having crosslinkable end groups were prepared by using a solution imidization method and their properties were investigated. Also, semi-interpenetrating polymer networks(semi-IPN) were prepared using the blends of imide oligomers with polyetherimide $Ultem^{(R)}$, which is used in dual-ovenable packaging materials. The characteristic properties of semi-IPN films were interpreted by using TGA, Thin Film Diffusion Analyzer, and WAXD. Molecular weights of imide oligomers were successfully controlled utilizing 2-aminophenylacetylene(APA) and maleic anhydride(MA) as an endcapping agent. Exotherm reactions by crosslinking appeared and the amount of exthotherm heat was linearly increased as the content of imide oligomers was increased. For semi-IPNs of $Ultem^{(R)}$ and imide oligomers, 5% and 10% weight loss temperatures increased as the contents of imide oligomers were increased. Diffusion coefficient and water uptake of semi-IPNs decreased as the content of imide oligomers was increased, which might be resulted from hydrophobic fluorine group and high packing density. It was concluded that relatively low thermal stability and hydrolytic stability of polyetherimide $Ultem^{(R)}$ were improved by incorporating new developed imide oligomers.

  • Active sites and substrate bindings of 1-aminoxyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase (MD-ACO1) catalyzing the oxidative conversion of ACC to ethylene have been determined based on site-directed mutagenesis and comparative modeling methods. Molecular modeling based on the crystal structure of Isopenicillin N synthase (IPNS) provided MD-ACO1 structure. MD-ACO1 protein folds into a compact jelly roll shape, consisting of 9 ${\alpha}$-helices, 10 ${\beta}$-strands and several long loops. The MD-ACO1/ACC/Fe(II)/Ascorbate complex conformation was determined from automated docking program, AUTODOCK. The MD-ACO1/Fell complex model was consistent with well known binding motif information (HIS177-ASP179-HIS234). The cosubstrate, ascorbate is placed between iron binding pocket and Arg244 of MD-ACO1 enzyme, supporting the critical role of Arg244 for generating reaction product. These findings are strongly supported by previous biochemical data as well as site-directed mutagenesis data. The structure of enzyme/substrate suggests the structural mechanism for the biochemical role as well as substrate specificity of MD-ACO1 enzyme.

  • This study examines the role of the nano- and micro-particle ratio in dispersion stability and mechanical properties of composite resins for SLA(stereolithography) 3D printing technology. VTES(vinyltriethoxysilane)-coated $ZrO_2$ ceramic particles with different nano- and micro-particle ratios are prepared by a hydrolysis and condensation reaction and then dispersed in commercial photopolymer (High-temp) based on interpenetrating networks(IPNs). The coating characteristics of VTES-coated $ZrO_2$ particles are observed by FE-TEM and FT-IR. The rheological properties of VTES-coated $ZrO_2/High-temp$ composite solution with different particle ratios are investigated by rheometer, and the dispersion properties of the composite solution are confirmed by relaxation NMR and Turbiscan. The mechanical properties of 3D-printed objects are measured by a tensile test and nanoindenter. To investigate the aggregation and dispersion properties of VTES-coated $ZrO_2$ ceramic particles with different particle ratios, we observe the cross-sectional images of 3D printed objects using FE-SEM. The 3D printed objects of the composite solution with nano-particles of 80 % demonstrate improved mechanical characteristics.
