  • An initial rotor position estimation method is proposed in this study for an interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor without a resolver or an absolute encoder. This method uses least squares approximation to estimate the initial rotor position. The magnetic polarity is identified by injection of short pulses. The proposed estimation process is robust because it does not require complex signal processing that depends on the performance of a digital filter. In addition, it can be applied to various servo systems because it does not require additional hardware. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method using a standard industrial servomotor with interior-permanent magnets.

  • In this paper, the basic design study of a water-cooling jacket, which have reported no cases for applying to railway traction motors so far, were conducted for applying to Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) for railway vehicles. The basic thermal characteristics analysis of the 110kW-class IPMSM was performed by using 3-dimentional thermal equivalent network method. The necessary design requirements of the water-cooling jacket were derived by analyzing the results of the basic thermal properties. Next, the thermal characteristics analysis technique was established by using the equivalent model of the solenoid-typed pipe to be installed on the inside of the water-cooling jacket for 110kW-class IPMSM. Finally, a design model of 6kW-class water-cooling jacket was derived through the analysis of various design parameters.

  • This paper presents the method to calculate the motor parameters considering skew in EPS Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM). The skew is applied to stator or rotor by general technology used for design of reducing noise and vibration in motor. The characteristics analysis of motor including the skew is mostly used by 3D Finite Element Analysis (FEA), though, this analysis is a very time-consuming to perform. Besides, The reliability lacks due to the considerable change of motor characteristics according to the number of elements in 3D FEA. However, analysis time and effort can be saved by characteristic analysis considering skew using 2D FEA. Therefore, in this paper, a quick and accurate method for the calculations of motor parameters considering skew is suggested. The proposed method is verified by the comparison of calculated and experimental results.

  • In this paper, inter-turn fault diagnosis of the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is performed in offline state by linking the finite element analysis (FEA) tool and control simulation tool. In order to diagnose the inter-turn fault, it is important to select the current value to determine the fault. First, the basic principles for inter-turn fault diagnosis of IPMSM are explained and co-analysis model for fault diagnosis is constructed. Further, in order to select the appropriate high frequency voltage, the change of the current value to be judged as failure was analyzed at various voltage and frequency conditions, and the change of the current value according to the number of the failed windings was analyzed. Finally, the current value to be judged as failure is selected.

  • A research on thermal analysis method is conducted for the characterization of heat generation during operation of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) for Light Railway Transits(LRT) in this paper. Efficient cooling of the heat generated in the IPMSM is important because the excessive heat generated from the winding, core and permanent magnet makes it harder for a long time continuous operation of IPMSM. Therefore, in order to analyze the heat generation characteristics of the 110kW-class IPMSM as advanced research for application the IPMSM to the cooling device, the heat transfer coefficients for each component of the 110 kW-class IPMSM were derived and the thermal equivalent network was configured to perform the thermal analysis in this study. Finally, the 110kW-class IPMSM prototype is made and a comparative verification between the test data and the thermal analysis results through its various performance tests are carried out.

  • This paper presents a method for evaluating interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) performance over the entire operation region. Using a d-q axis equivalent circuit model consisting of motor parameters such as the permanent magnetic flux, copper resistance, core loss resistance, and d-q axis inductance, a conventional mathematical model of an IPMSM has been developed. It is well understood that in IPMSMs, magnetic operating conditions cause cross saturation and that the iron loss resistance - upon which core losses depend - changes according to the motor speed; for the sake of convenience, however, d-q axis machine models usually neglect the influence of magnetic cross saturation and assume that the iron loss resistance is constant. This paper proposes an analysis method based on considering a magnetic cross saturation and estimating a core loss resistance that changes with the operating conditions and speed. The proposed method is then verified by means of a comparison between the computed and the experimental results.

  • The paper reports an improvement method on torque ripples of multi-pole interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) applied to a traction motor for hybrid electric vehicles. In the case of multi-pole IPMSM, the magnetic flux generated by a permanent magnet tends to leak through the bridge of the rotor without a link with stator windings. The slit design on the rotor surface was proposed to reduce torque rippling and increase the output power by reducing the leakage flux. Two design parameters for the slit are suggested for optimal design using the response surface method. As an analysis method, the 2D finite element method (FEM) was applied to consider magnetic saturation effect.

  • Recently, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(PMSM) drives are widely used for industrial applications due to its high efficiency and high power factor control strategy. PMSM generally have two classifications such as the SPMSM(Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) and IPMSM(Inter Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors). IPMSA has economical merits over SPMSM in higher speed range, mechanical robustness, and higher power rate by the geometric difference. The maximum torque operation in IPMSM is realized by the current angle control which is to utilize additional reluctance torque due to a rotor saliency. In traction, spindle and compressor drives, constant power operation with higher speed range are desirable. This is simply achieved in the DC motor drives by the reduction of the field current as the speed is increased. However, in the PMSM, direct control of the magnet flux is not available. The airgap flux can be weakened by the appropriate current angle control to demagnetize. In this paper, the control method of optimal current vector in IPMSM is described in order to obtain the maximum torque or maximum output with the speed and load variations. The applied algorithm is realized by the proto system with torque and speed control Experimental results show this approach is satisfied for the high performance servo applications. • In order to apply Interior Permanet Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) to the propulsion system of the railway transit, 110kW class IPMSMs with high-power density are designed as a concentrated winding model and a distributed winding model in this study. The concentrated winding model designed in this study is 6 poles/9 slots and the distributed winding model is 6 poles/36 slots. In general, the eddy current losses in the permanent magnets of IPMSM are caused by the slot harmonics. The thermal demagnetization of the magnet by the eddy current losses at high rotational speed often becomes one of the major problems in the IPMSM with a concentrated windings especially. A design to reduce eddy current losses in permanent magnet design is important in IPMSM for the railway vehicle propulsion system which requires high-speed operation. Therefore, a method to devide the permanent magnet is proposed to reduce the eddy current losses in permanent magnet in this study. Authors analyze the variation characteristics of the eddy current losses generated in permanent magnet of the concentrated winding model by changing the number of the division of the permanent magnets.

  • For the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) drive to operate above the base speed in the constant horsepower region, the field weakening control is applied. However, the field weakening control was not almost applied to sensorless control of the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor. In this paper, the field weakening control is applied to the sensorless control of IPMSM based on the fuzzy controller. The effectiveness of the proposed system is verified by the experimental results.
