The Role of Open Business Model in Technology Commercialization

  • Purpose: This paper has examined the impact of open innovation business model in technology commercialization with the data from 30 companies of manufacturing firms in South Korea. Methods: The findings provide support for distinguishing five hypotheses relating to development time, IP management, sales, firm size and R&D intensity. To test the hypotheses, data were collected using via e-mail and fax. Small and medium-sized (less than 300 employees) and large industrial firms were chosen for this study. Results: The result shows that openness in its business model is positively associated with successful technology commercialization. Conclusion: The major findings and the implications are: First, as the business model gets more open, development period of technology will be more favorable which gets benefit from rising costs of innovation. Second, as the business model gets more open, large portion of sales are created from new products. Thus, the problem of shorter product life in the market which affects large portion of market revenue can be solved through an open business model. Third, in general, R&D intensity, firm size and the level of IP management affect determination of business model types. The findings also suggest that companies need to increasingly address their external technology exploitation process instead of focusing on their internal innovation processes.

  • Recently, growing up in social and economic development, the lifestyle of Koreans brought many changes in the form of leisure activity and influenced a lot in leisure. In particular, the establishment of the five-day work week increased the leisure time and became popular with family activities. Accordingly, the base of the leisure population expanding, people have an interest in the new way of leisure and the desire is increasing. Camping culture that increasingly take place in the tent camping now is changing into a cultural center to enjoy the camping SUV vehicle. The desire of consumers for the design of the unique exterior and interior caravan increasingly appearing as a major requirement. In this study, we propose a caravan design development strategies to meet the needs of such customers. First analyzes the hypothesis set and to identify the Overview of the caravan, and optimization of use and the problem of the user. Proceed with the design map analysis through classification of the caravan design registered in the KIPO, and proceed to the market research and patented technology to identify and to proceed with the caravan design development strategies for the various products.

Combining Model-based and Heuristic Techniques for Fast Tracking the Global Maximum Power Point of a Photovoltaic String

  • Under partial shading conditions (PSCs), multiple maximums may be exhibited on the P-U curve of string inverter photovoltaic (PV) systems. Under such conditions, heuristic methods are invalid for extracting a global maximum power point (GMPP); intelligent algorithms are time-consuming; and model-based methods are complex and costly. To overcome these shortcomings, a novel hybrid MPPT (MPF-IP&O) based on a model-based peak forecasting (MPF) method and an improved perturbation and observation (IP&O) method is proposed. The MPF considers the influence of temperature and does not require solar radiation measurements. In addition, it can forecast all of the peak values of the PV string without complex computation under PSCs, and it can determine the candidate GMPP after a comparison. Hence, the MPF narrows the searching range tremendously and accelerates the convergence to the GMPP. Additionally, the IP&O with a successive approximation strategy searches for the real GMPP in the neighborhood of the candidate one, which can significantly enhance the tracking efficiency. Finally, simulation and experiment results show that the proposed method has a higher tracking speed and accuracy than the perturbation and observation (P&O) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) methods under PSCs.

A Strategy of the Link Saving Routing and Its Characteristics for QoS Aware Energy Saving(QAES) in IP Networks (IP Network에서 QoS Aware Energy Saving(QAES)을 위한 링크 절약 라우팅의 한 방법 및 특성)

  • Today the energy consumption of ICT networks is about 10% of the worldwide power consumption and is predicted to increase remarkably in the near future. For this reason, this paper studies energy saving strategies assuring the network-level QoS. In the strategies, the energy consumption of NIC(network interface card) on both endpoint of links decreases by selecting links and making them sleep when the total traffic volume of the IP network is lower than a threshold. In this paper, we propose a heuristic routing algorithm based on so-called delegating/delegated routers, and evaluate its characteristics using computer simulation considering network-level QoS. The selection of sleep links is determined in terms of the number of traffic paths (called min_used path) or the amount of traffics(called min_used traffic) through those kinks. To our experiment, the min_used traffic method shows a little better energy saving but the increased path length compared to the min_used path method. Those two methods have better energy saving characteristics than the random method. This paper confirms that the delegating/delegated router-based routing algorithm results in energy saving effects and sustains network-level QoS in IP networks.

  • The concept of license sales and its business model, which was introduced by Dolby 40 years ago, was implemented by Intel in the form of their promotional strategy "Intel Inside" and became the basis for Sharp's Plasmacluster. This strategy proved to be useful in securing stable profitability and competitiveness in the market, as it is designed to (i) license technology, which is an intangible asset, and (ii) combine various communication activities and management strategies to create a brand for the licensed technology. Although the concept and theory of "Technology Brand Marketing" are not fully understood, we know that they exist and are fully functional. Many corporations have branded their technology, though their intention may not be as clear as that of Dolby or Intel. This paper introduces the technology brands of advanced Japanese corporations in different sectors that have striven to earn credibility through "Technology Brand Marketing" and the possibilities this has opened up for them.

A Study on the Interior Design Guidelines in consideration of Merchandising of Department Store Supermarket (백화점 수퍼마켓의 머천다이징을 고려한 실내디자인 지침에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the details of the overall interior design of the department store supermarket retail space, interior design and development, seeks to help change. In this study, a range of research the department store supermarket located in the major department store. Since 2012, new construction or renewal has been done in a department store, was investigated by selecting a total of five locations of two places in the premium supermarket. Conclusions are as followings ; First, In-store merchandising strategies, store configuration strategy, product mix strategies, and the layout plan considering the advanced strategies. Secondly, the interior guidelines are, (1)VP should be planned as an expression of a company or brand management strategies to visualize a concept image of product planning stages of merchandising to entering the store to induce curiosity to customers. (2)PP is by planning purposes, the use of lighting, directing structure, color harmony, by utilizing such as props and small parts must be able to attract attention. (3)IP is the customer to organize display, depending on the type of the display items to facilitate fraud, and the fixture plan in association with it, the customer selects a product must induced to purchase.

  • Although the effectiveness of an express train's service is measured in "Total System Time or Cost" units, many cases had used indirect method what based on the distintion by number of passengers in a station or experiential knowledgements. These methods are not guarantee itself as an optimal strategy. Focusing "Total System Time or Cost" directly, this paper investigates the express train service's stop scheduling based on each OD-volume and trip time which mainly affect system time and cost. To do this, we built an IP model which has a binary set presenting express train's stop scheduling as decision variable and suggest a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to find heuristic optimal solution.

  • Recently, network systems are widely used in several areas, and some considerable attentions have been directed to the Networked Control System(NCS). In NCS, network-induced delays are inevitable, and they sometimes degrade the performance of networked control systems to be a source of potential instability. In this paper, We proposes a compensation method for networked control system subject to network-induced delays by using a simple method, which is based on a sort of predictive strategy. To evaluate its feasibility and effectiveness, a real-time NCS for a rotary inverted pendulum is implemented via an Ethernet. Based on the experimental results. we show that the proposed simple method can be a practical and feasible solution to NCS design.

  • FieldBus communication systems in industrial wired and wireless network may cause the degradation of the TCP performance due to the racket loss. TCP is particularly targeted at the wired networks, a packet loss is assumed to be caused by the network congestion. As a result, the performance of TCP decreases significantly when used over networks that exhibit a high bit error rate. In order to solve this problem, this paper designs and implements the WFSnoop mechanism which offers a fast local retransmission. The proposed mechanism does not require any changes in customer premises. Base on the simulation in the wired and wireless network environment, we analyzed the performance of the WFSnoop mechanism.
