Plant Flora and Insect Fauna in the Fallow Paddy Fields of Jeonnam and Jeonbuk Province (전남북지역 휴경논의 식생 및 곤충상)

  • A study was conducted to find out plant flora, the occurrence of insect pests and natural enemies in the fallow paddy fields of Jeonnam and Jeonbuk provinces from 2004 to 2005. They were identified as 124 plant species in 32 families, 58 insect pest species in 30 families and 11 natural enemy species in 9 families. Plant species belonging to Poaceae and Asteraceae were founded as 28 and 18 species, respectively, and dominated significantly among plants growing in the fallow paddy fields. In insect pests, Conocephalus chinensis, Nysius plebejus, Cletus punctiger, Eysarcoris aeneus, Nephotettix cincticeps, Laodelphax striatellus and Tipula sp. occurred significantly in the fallow paddy fields. Among them, occurrences of N. cincticeps and L. striatellus were low from May to June, and that of L. striatellus was high in August and September. In insect natural enemies, Coenagrion sp., Harmonia axyridis, Propylea japonica and Eristalis tenax occurred significantly in the fallow paddy fields.

Insect Diversity on the Paddy Field Wetland, Gonggeom-ji, Sangju, first designed by Ministry of Environment, Korea (국내 최초 환경부 지정 논 습지 지역인 공검지의 곤충 다양성)

  • This study was conducted to know the wetland insect diversity at Gonggeom-ji in Sangju city which is the first designated paddy field wetland protection by the Ministry of Environment of Korea in 2011. Data was collected at four times from March to November in 2014 using by Searching, Sweeping and Pitfall trap methods. In this study a total of 227 species of 205 genera belonging to 78 families from 8 orders were collected and individuals were 1,327. Among them, the order of Coleoptera was the most species-rich (42.73%), Hemiptera was the second order (22.47%). In the total diversity index (H') was 6.339 that means highly positive. Dominant Index (DI) was 0.143, Evenness index (EI) was 0.810. Over all survey periods, interspecies competitiveness was high, and community stability was also high. Therefore Gonggeom-ji wetland revealed stable and positive environmental situation.

Occurrence of Insect Pests from Street Trees in Six Urban and Suburban Parks of Honam Region, South Korea (호남권 내 6개 지역에서의 도심 및 교외 수목 해충 발생 양상)

  • We investigated the occurrence of insect pests on street trees that were planted or naturally grew in a total of six urban and suburban parks (two sites in Iksan, one site in Gimje and three sites in Gwangju) in Honam region, South Korea from May to September, 2022. The six survey sites are divided into three characters, two 'nearby forest (NF)', two 'nearby river (NR)' and two 'nearby downtown (ND)' according to the created location of sites and the results on fauna of insect pests compared with street tree species for each character of survey sites. As results, we could discover 51 species of 49 genera in 27 families belonging to five insect orders from a total of 21 tree species belonging to 13 families in six survey sites. Among the insect taxa, hemipteran pests are most diverse with 22 species of 20 genera in 12 families and it is confirmed that Prunus × yedoensis Matsum. (Rosaceae) is damaged by most diverse 25 insect pests. With regard to character of survey sites, trees in 'nearby river' were affected by most diverse 34 insect pests, even though tree species were few compare to sites of 'nearby forest' and 'nearby downtown. Among the affected area of tree parts, leaf-feeding insect pests are most diverse with 22 species. From the present study, we provided a checklist of insect pests from the street trees and selected six most concerned species. Indeed, it is needed to conduct sustainable surveys and monitoring on occurrence of insect pests from street trees in urban and suburban parks because the species of planted street trees in parks can be extremely diverse with occurrence of unexpected insect pests.

Influence of β-carotene enhanced transgenic soybean cultivation on the diversity of non-target arthropods in Korea for three years

  • Environmental risk assessment of living modified (LM) crops is essential for their cultivation. In this study, we cultivated β-carotene enhanced transgenic soybean (LM soybean) and non-LM soybean (Gwangan) in living modified organism (LMO) isolated fields, and investigated changes in the insect fauna using three types of collection methods for three years. In total, 331,483 individual insects and arachnids, representing 82 families in 14 orders, were captured during the study. Totals of 166,518 and 164,965 individual insects and arachnids were collected from LM soybean and Gwangan, respectively. Throughout the study, although there were differences between the investigation year, region, and methods, there were no significant differences between the population densities of insect pests, natural enemies, and other insects on LM soybean and non-LM soybean. Also, there were no statistically significant differences between varieties in the results of the species diversity analysis. The data on insect species population densities were subjected to multidimensional scaling (MDS), which did not distinguish between the two varieties, LM soybean and the non-LM soybean, in all cultivated fields. However, the results of the MDS analysis were completely divided into six groups based on the yearly survey areas. These results provided the insect diversity for an environmental risk assessment of LM soybean and suggested that the guideline could be useful to detect LM crops.

A Checklist of the Families Lonchaeidae, Pallopteridae, Platystomatidae, and Ulidiidae (Insecta: Diptera: Tephritoidea) in Korea with Notes on 12 Species New to Korea

  • A preliminary list of the following four tephritoid families is provided including 30 Korean species, of which 12 are new to Korea: two Lonchaeidae, three Pallopteridae (two new to Korea), 17 Platystomatidae (two new to Korea), and eight Ulidiidae (all new to Korea). This list is mainly based on the insect collection at the Yonsei University Wonju Campus and on previous publications concerning these taxa. Although a full taxonomic revision for each family is required in the long term, this preliminary list will provide a useful starting point to further investigation of these families. For the other three tephritoid families known in Korea but not treated in the present study, 89 species of Tephritidae, 14 species of Pyrgotidae, and one species of the rare family Ctenostylidae have been reported previously. A total of 134 species in seven families are officially recognized for the Korean fauna of the superfamily Tephritoidea.

New Korean Record of Twenty Eight Species of the Family Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera)

  • We report twenty eight ichneumonid species new to Korea. These species belong to seven subfamilies. Among them five subfamilies, Diacritinae Townes, 1965, Microleptinae Townes, 1958, Orthocentrinae F$\ddot{o} $rster, 1869, Orthopelmatinae Schmiedeknecht, 1910, Phrudinae Townes and Townes, 1949, are newly introduced to Korean fauna. All specimens are based on the insect collection of animal systematic laboratory at the Yeungnam University Gyeongsan Campus. Photographs of habitus of newly recorded subfamilies, diagnosis of 28 species and host information are provided.

  • Two species, Lyctoxylon dentatum (Pascoe, 1866) and Melalgus batillus (Lesne, 1902), belong to the family Bostrichidae are reported in Korea for the first time. We provide the brief diagnosis and information on the species and their photographic images.

A Study on the Characteristics of Aquatic Insect Fauna in Differently Disrupted Ponds Located in Gungdaeoreum, Jeju (제주도 궁대오름 일대 교란정도가 다른 연못의 수서곤충 분포 특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to understand the distribution characteristics of aquatic insects in ecologically different ponds in terms of the disruption. We investigated the fauna of aquatic insects in three artificial ponds (pond 1, 2 and 3) and two natural ponds (pond 4 and 5) located within 1 km each other around Gungdaeoreum in Jeju Island, from March 2018 to June 2020. A total of 50 species belonging to 15 families were found in the surveyed ponds: total 850 individuals with 14 species in 4 families of the order Odonata, total 4,391 individuals with 14 species in 6 families of the order Hemiptera, and total 2,014 individuals with 22 species in 4 families of the order Coleoptera. In overall, total abundance and species numbers were relatively higher than those of artificial pond in natural ponds in which animal and plant ecosystems were well established. In the case of artificial ponds, the number of individuals and species recovered rapidly when reconstituted by introducing aquatic plants, etc. (Pond 1). The nymphs of Odonata were observed largely in ponds without natural enemies such as large fish, and where adults could freely access without interception by artificial structure. Phytophagous Corixidae of the order Hemiptera were abundant, and Haliplidae populations of the order Coleoptera were affected by the distribution of the plants. Accordingly, the major factors affecting aquatic insect abundance were identified as the presence of refuges such as the topography and aquatic plants and presence of predators. Species of the order, Odonata were vulnerable based on these factors. Our results can be useful as basic information for the restoration of wetlands and construction of artificial wetlands or for conservation of species diversity in the future.

The Change of Flora and Fauna on Extensive Rooftop Green Areas (관리조방형 옥상녹화지의 동.식물상 변화)

  • The purpose of this study is conducted to examine the change of flora and fauna in the extensive rooftop green area from 2005 to 2009. The experimental site is on the rooftop green area of Seoul Women's University which was constructed in 2005. This research was consisted of four parts: soil, potted plants, invading plants and small animals especially insects. The plants were surveyed by enumeration, while animals were surveyed by two methods which are 'Netting and Searching' and 'Pit fall trap'. The initial group of plants planted in 2005 was 100 species of 26 families whereas in 2009 there were 62 species of 23 families including 22 invading species of 11 families. In case of insects in 2009, 21 species of 7 families (9 orders) were detected; 19 species of 15 families (8 orders) were discovered by 'Netting and Searching' and 5 species of 5 families (5 orders) by 'Pit fall trap'.

An Ecological Study on the Wetlands in Haman Area (함안지역 습지에 대한 생태학적 연구)

  • The ecological study on seven wetlands of Haman area in Kyungsangnamdo, Korea, was carried out. In especial, the biological data of the sites were unknown. In this study, water quality including water temperature, pH, DO, COD, T-N, T-P, SS were tested. On the survey of plants and animals, vegetation and flora were investigated and the fauna of insects, fish, and amphibians were studied on each wetland. Water of wetland Oksu was heavily polluted and wetlands Pyungy and Dodulyangy were relatively clean. The water pollution was most severe in winter at all of the wetlands. Plant communities were classified into 9 natural communities and 1 artificial community. On the vegetation, wetland Sugok showed the highest plant taxa, and 41 families, 78 species and 16 varieties were classified. There was remarkable difference in number of plant taxa. The difference may be caused by the variances of wetland sizes, the influence from terrestrial environment. Wetland Sugok showed most rich insect fauna, and 10 orders, 76 families 224 species and 1082 individuals were identified. The species diversity was 2.05 and the species richness was 73.49. Wetland Ddun showed poor insect fauna, and 6 orders, 23 families, 29 species and 81 individuals were identified. Total collected fish were 4 orders, 7 families and 11 species. The fish fauna was most rich in wetlands Oksu and Pyungy, but poor in wetland Unan. Total collected amphibians were 2 orders, 3 families and 4 species.
