DNA barcoding has been widely used in species identification and biodiversity research. A short fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequence serves as a DNA bio-barcode. We collected DNA barcodes, based on COI sequences from 156 species (529 sequences) of fish, insects, and shellfish. We present results on phylogenetic relationships to assess biodiversity the in the Korean peninsula. Average GC% contents of the 68 fish species (46.9%), the 59 shellfish species (38.0%), and the 29 insect species (33.2%) are reported. Using the Kimura 2 parameter in all possible pairwise comparisons, the average interspecific distances were compared with the average intraspecific distances in fish (3.22 vs. 0.41), insects (2.06 vs. 0.25), and shellfish (3.58 vs. 0.14). Our results confirm that distance-based DNA barcoding provides sufficient information to identify and delineate fish, insect, and shellfish species by means of all possible pairwise comparisons. These results also confirm that the development of an effective molecular barcode identification system is possible. All DNA barcode sequences collected from our study will be useful for the interpretation of species-level identification and community-level patterns in fish, insects, and shellfish in Korea, although at the species level, the rate of correct identification in a diversified environment might be low.
Leaf feeding insect species of welsh onion and shallot were surveyed, and their species abundances were analyzed by fitness test for lognomal disstribution. A total of 13 and 6 species were identified on welsh onion and shallot, respectively. The dominant species on welsh onion were Thrips tabacid, Acrolepiopsis sapporensis, Spodoptera exigua, and Liriomyza chinensis. Thrips tabacid was also identified as the major species on the shallot. The community dominance was high in welsh onion and shallot observed on 12 October, Suwon. The species abundance patterns of the two communities were well described by lognormal distribution(P> 0.50).
Headwater streams provide various microhabitats, resulting in high diversity of macroinvertebrate community. In this study, we compared the differences of communities between two adjacent headwater streams (Jangjeon stream (GRJ; GRJ1-GRJ5) and Haanmi stream (GRH; GRH1-GRH3)) in Jungwang and Gariwang mountains, Gangwon-do and evaluated the effects of habitat condition to the macroinvertebrates community composition. In order to characterize the macroinvertebrate communities and extract influential environmental factors, we applied to Cluster analysis (CA), Indicator species analysis and Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). Total 33,613 individuals in 3 phyla, 5 classes, 13 orders, 51 families, and 114 taxa (genera or species) were collected. Gammarus sp. was dominant at the upper stream of GRJ, whereas Chironomidae spp. was abundant at GRH and the downstream of GRJ. The CA classified samples into six clusters (1-6) reflecting spatial and temporal variation of benthic macroinvertebrate communities. Benthic macroinvertebrate community composition was significantly different between two adjacent streams. Sweltsa sp. 1, Psilotreta kisoensis, Rhyacophila shikotsuensis and Serratella setigera were identified as representative indicator species for clusters 1, 2, 3 and 5, respectively. Similar to CA results, NMDS revealed the spatial and temporal differences of benthic macroinvertebrate communities, indicating the difference of community composition as well as microhabitat condition. Forest composition, proportion of boulders (>256 mm), and water velocity were main factors affecting the macroinvertebrate community composition.
Actinomycetes produce diverse secondary metabolites which have the primary importance in medicine, agriculture and food production, and key to this is their ability to interact with other organisms in natural habitats. In this study, we have investigated the taxonomical and functional diversity of actinomycetes in fecal sample of rhinoceros beetle larvae (Allomyrina dichotoma L.) by using culture-dependent and -independent approaches. For the culture-independent approach, the community DNA was extracted from the sample and 16S rRNA genes of actinomycetes were amplified using actinomycetes-specific PCR primers. Thirty-seven clones were classified into 15 genera and 24 species of actinomycetes. For the culture-dependent approach, 53 strains were isolated from larval feces, of which 27 isolates were selected based on morphological characteristics. The isolates were classified into 4 genera and 14 species, and 24 isolates (89%) were identified as the genus Streptomyces. Many of the representative isolates had antimicrobial activities against plant pathogenic fungi and Gram-positive bacteria. In addition, most of the isolates (78%) showed biochemical properties to hydrolyze cellulose and casein. The results demonstrated that diverse and valuable actinomycetes could be isolated from insect fecal samples, indicating that insect guts can be rich sources for novel bioactive compounds.
The purpose of this study is to identify insects inhabiting Mulyeongari-Oreum wetland and to provide basic information for conservation of wetlands. As a result, a total 229 species, 73 families, 9 orders of insects were collected: 136 species, 39 families, 6 orders from Mulyeongari-Oreum Wetland and 121 species, 52 families, 9 orders from Mt. Sooryeong. Of the 229 species of insects investigated, Copris tripartitus Waterhouse, an endangered species of wildlife fauna in Korea, was found with many individuals. Also, Lychnuris rufa(Olivier), having a narrow habitat near unpolluted water and mountains, was also recorded with 3 individuals and then should be considered as a protected species in Wetlands. To identify the community structure of moth on Mulyeongari-Oreum wetland, a light trap was examined and a total 76 species of moths were collected. Total dominant species was Hydrillodes morosa(Butler) with index of 0.12 and the species diversity on the moth community from survey area was the highest in July with index of 3.42.
In this study, gut bacterial communities in xylophagous insects were analyzed using the pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA genes for their potential biotechnological applications in lignocelluloses degradation. The result showed that operational taxonomic units (OTUs), species richness and diversity index were higher in the hindgut than in the midgut of all insect samples analyzed. The dominant phyla or classes were Firmicutes (54.0%), Bacteroidetes (14.5%), ${\gamma}-Proteobacteria$ (12.3%) in all xylophagous insects except for Rhinotermitidae. The principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) showed that the bacterial community structure mostly clustered according to phylogeny of hosts rather than their habitats. In our study, the two carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-degrading isolates which showed the highest enzyme activity were most closely related to Bacillus toyonensis $BCT-7112^T$ and Lactococcus lactis subsp. hordniae $NCDO\;2181^T$, respectively. Cellulolytic enzyme activity analysis showed that ${\beta}-1,4-glucosidase$, ${\beta}-1,4-endoglucanase$ and ${\beta}-1,4-xylanase$ were higher in the hindgut of Cerambycidae. The results demonstrate that xylophagous insect guts harbor diverse gut bacteria, including valuable cellulolytic bacteria, which could be used for various biotechnological applications.
The environmental risks of cucumber mosaic virus resistant transgenic chili peppers with the CMVP0-CP gene on non-target organisms in the agroecosystem environments was evaluated during the periods of the chili pepper growing season (June 19, July 30, August 31) in 2007. Arthropods assemblages leaves and flowers of chili peppers were quantitatively collected by using an insect vacuum collector to compare the arthropod community structures between non-transgenic chili peppers (nTR, P 915) and mosaic virus resistant transgenic chili peppers (TR, CMV-cp, line 7). There was no statistical difference in the arthropod community structure between the two types of crops, nTR and TR, at the same season, although the species richness and Shannon's index were somewhat different among seasons; indicating no effects of genetically modified peppers on the arthropod community. However, further studies were required to conclude more concretely for the potential environmental risk of the transgenic chili pepper of CMV-cp.

Community composition and abundance of aquatic invertebrates are important for ecological functions. Community characteristics of insects and gastropods were compared in five regions to investigate the effect of geological factors in surveys conducted between June and August to analyze seasonal changes in invertebrate communities. Underwater traps were used to obtain a constant collection effect. Insect communities were dominated by Hydrochara affinis, Rhantus suturalis and Sigara nigroventralis, and nMDS analysis demonstrated the separation of their communities by region. H. affinis and Sternolophus rufipes were not found in Haenam and Cheolwon, respectively. The results showed the effects of regional temperature on the distribution of aquatic insects. Pomacea canaliculata, Hippeutis cantori and Austropeplea ollula were dominant in the gastropod community. The seasonal variation in the abundance of P. canaliculata was the most pronounced, and its abundance in August was 38.2 times higher than in June. The abundances of several species including Hippeutis cantori were negatively correlated with that of P. canaliculata. These results suggest that P. canaliculata is a pivotal factor that drives seasonal changes in gastropod community.
This study was carried out to investigate the benthic macroinvertebrates community of three surveyed sites, Kwangdeok-gyo, Yangeochang, and Gudam-gyo, located at Gudam in Gyeongsangbuk-do. The benthic macroinvertebrates collected from the surveyed sites were composed of 47 species, 26 families, 11 orders, 5 class, 3 phyla. Among these phyla, aquatic insects in Arthropoda were 38 species, 20 families and 5 orders. Each of sites has shown the particular situation of aquatic insect fauna on the species composition. Chironomus sp. at the all surveyed sites was dominant species. Dominance indices(DI) showed most highly at St. 2 and lowly at St. 1. The species diversity indices(H') showed the highest at St. 1 and lowest at St. 2. Dominance indices ranged 0.40~1.00(mean, 0.69), and species diversity indices ranged 0.04~3.40(mean. 1.98).

This study was corried out to provide basic data for water analysis biodiversity, Actual vegetation map, flora and fauna on the Sanchon-tideland(Geojaesi), Doma-tideland(Namhaegun) in Kyungsangnamdo from august 2002 to February 2003. This tidelands was very broad and was being reclaimed. Therefore, it was anxious about destroying the habitat of the water birds. Since the water temperature was influenced by the surrounding air, it was highest in summer and lowest in winter. pH value and DO concentration of the water was highest in winter in the Sanchon-tideland and in surmmer in the Doma-tideland. COD concentration was lowest in winter in two tidelands. SS concentration was highest in summer. T-P and T-N concentration were very low but decreased with the seasonal change from summer to winter. Vascular plants of this area consist of 11 varieties, 67 species, 64 genera, 29 families(Sanchon-tideland) and 1 forma, 11varieties, 62 species, 64 genera, 30 families(Doma-tideland). The predominant community of this area, Phragmites communis Community were found on the seashore. The total insect specimens were classified into 120 species, 48 families, 10 orders(Sanchon-tideland) and perdominant species were Gabala argentata(Dominance 18.78%, Diversity index 1.75, Richness index 45.78). And 91 species, 40 families, 8 orders(Doma-tideland) and perdominant species were Sternolophus (Sternolophus) rufipes(Dominance 15.47%, Diversity index 1.47, Richness index 33.66). The total Fishes were classified into 3 species, 2 families, 1 order and Amphibia were 3 species, 2 families, 1 order. And Salicomia herbacea should be worthwhile species to conserve in this area. Because the water birds lived in The Tideland Sanchon and Doma, it was considered that it was necessary to preserve them.
