승용 디젤 엔진의 실린더 차이 압력을 이용한 IMEP 추정 및 제어 알고리즘 개발 (Development of IMEP Estimation and Control Algorithm Using In-Cylinder Difference Pressure for Passenger Diesel Engines)

  • 이 연구에서는 실린더 압력과 모터링 압력의 차이인 차이 압력(difference pressure)을 이용하여 IMEP를 추정하는 방법을 제안하고, 추정된 IMEP를 $IMEP_{diff}$로 정의하였다. $IMEP_{diff}$는 차이 압력이 연소 시작 시점에서 연소 종료 시점까지만 존재하는 압력이라는 사실에 기반하여 이론적인 IMEP 계산식의 연산 구간을 최적화한 것으로 IMEP와 비교 시 $R^2$ 0.9955의 높은 선형관계를 보였다. 또한 이론적인 IMEP 계산 방법과 비교하여 21 %의 실린더 압력 데이터 및 31 %의 계산량만으로 IMEP 획득이 가능하여 실시간 제어에 용이하다. $IMEP_{diff}$ 추정 및 제어 성능은 엔진 실험을 통하여 검증하였으며, $IMEP_{diff}$ 제어를 통하여 실린더 간 토크 편차 감소를 확인하였다.

Combustion and Emission Characteristics of a Natural Gas Engine under Different Operating Conditions

  • Natural gas is a promising alternative fuel of internal combustion engines. In this paper, the combustion and emission characteristics were investigated on a natural gas engine at two different fuel injection timings during the intake stroke. The results show that fuel injection timing affects combustion processes. The optimum spark timing (MBT) achieving the maximum indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) is related to fuel injection timing and air fuel ratio. At MBT spark timing, late fuel injection timing delays ignition timing and prolongs combustion duration in most cases. But fuel injection timing has little effect on IMEP at fixed lambdas. The coefficient of variation (COV) of IMEP is dependent on air fuel ratio, throttle positions and fuel injection timings at MBT spark timing. The COV of IMEP increases with lambda in most cases. Late fuel injection timings can reduce the COV of IMEP at part loads. Moreover, engine-out CO and total hydrocarbon (THC) emissions can be reduced at late fuel injection timing.

  • Calculation of indicated mean effective pressure(IMEP) requires high cylinder pressure sampling rate and heavy computational load. Because of that, it is difficult to implement in a conventional electronic control unit. In this paper, a cylinder pressure based real-time IMEP estimation method is proposed for controller implementation. Crank angle at 10-bar difference pressure($CA_{DP10}$) and cylinder pressure difference between $60^{\circ}$ ATDC and $60^{\circ}$ BTDC($DP_{deg}$) are used for IMEP estimation. These pressure variables can represent effectively start of combustion(SOC) and fuel injection quantity respectively. The proposed IMEP estimation method is validated by transient engine operation using a common-rail direct injection diesel engine.

Experimental Study on the Cycle-to-Cycle Combustion Variations in a Spark Ignition Engine

  • A cyclic variability has long been recognized as limiting the range of operating conditions of spark ignition engines, in particular, under idling conditions. The coefficient of variation (COV) in indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) defines the cyclic variability in indicated work per cycle, and it has been found that vehicle drivability problems usually result. For analysis of the cyclic variations in spark ignition engines at idling, the results show that cyclic variability by the COV, COV of IMEP, the lowest normalized value (LNV), and burn angles can help to design the spark ignition engine.

  • It is necessary to understand the combustion process and cycle-by-cycle variation in combustion to improve the engine stability and consequently to improve the fuel economy and exhaust emissions. The pressure related parameters instead of mass fraction burned were compared for the effect of initial combustion pressures on the following combustion and the analysis of cycle-by-cycle variation in combustion for two pen injected SI engines. The correlation between IMEP and pressures at referenced crank angles showed almost the same trends for equivalence ratios, but the different mixture preparations indicated different tendency. The dependency of IMEP on pressure at the referenced crank angles increases as the mixture becomes leaner for both engines. The mixture distribution in the combustion chamber was varied with the coolant temperature and intake valve deactivation due to the evaporation of fuel and air motion. The correlation between pressure related parameters were also compared for the coolant temperatures and air motion.

The cyclic combustion variations can be characterized by the pressure parameters, combustion parameters, and flame front parameters. The coefficient of variation in indicated mean effective pressure ($COV_{IMEP}$) defines the cyclic variability in indicated work per cycle, and it has been found that vehicle driveability problems usually result when $COV_{IMEP}$ exceeds about 10%. For analysis of the cyclic variability in SI engines at idling, the results show that cyclic variability by the $COV_{IMEP}$ or the coefficient of variation in maximum pressure can be explained and may be consequently reduced by the help of the optimum spark timings.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate variation of spark plug protrusion and PDA valve on the exhaust emission in a gasoline engine. Swirl is one of the important parameters that affects the characteristics of combustion. PDA valve has been developed to satisfy requirements of sufficient swirl generation for improving the combustion and reducing of emission level. Also, especially, the variation of spark plug protrusion have an important effect to the early flame propagative process. This is largely due to the high flame speed by short of flame propagation distance. So, this is forced that injection timing, spark timing and intake air motion govern the stable combustion. As a result, using two combustion chamber, without charge of engine specification and the variable spark plug location and PDA valve could be reduced exhaust gas at a part load engine conditions(1500rpm imep 3.9bar, 2000rpm imep 3.2bar, 2400rpm imep 3.9bar).

HCCI엔진의 과급조건에서 EGR영향에 대한 수치해석적 연구 (Numerical Investigation of Exhaust Gas Recirculation Effect under Boost Pressure Condition on Homogeneous Charge Compression Autoignition)

  • 본 연구에서는 HCCI엔진의 과급조건에서 EGR의 영향에 대하여 수치해석적인 방법으로 연구하였다. 수치해석은 CHEMKIN-PRO에 있는 single-zone model을 사용하였고 연료로는 N-heptnae, Iso-octane 그리고 PRF50을 사용하였다. 사용된 연료의 화학반응 매커니즘과 열역학적 변수들은 Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory(LLNL)의 모델을 사용하였다. 연소상의 변화는 열효율에 큰 영향을 미치게 되므로 이영향을 배제하기 위해 본 연구에서는 CA50을 $365^{\circ}CA$($5^{\circ}CA$ aTDC)로 일정하게 고정하였다. 연구결과 EGR의 영향으로 줄어든 산소의 영향에 의해 저온산화반응과 NTC, 고온산화반응이 모두 약화되고 열발생률이 감소하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 과급과 EGR을 함께 사용하게 되면 과급에 의해 증가한 산소량과 연료의 영향으로 인해 연소가 강화되어 저온산화반응, NTC, 고온산화반응이 강화되고 열 발생률이 증가하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. EGR만을 사용하는 경우 IMEP가 감소하는 경향을 나타내지만 과급과 EGR을 함께 사용하는 경우 과급의 영향으로 인해 IMEP가 크게 증가하여 낮은 압력상승률과 높은 출력을 함께 얻을 수 있는 것을 확인하였다.

폐회로 디젤엔진의 연소특성에 관한 고찰 (An Investigation on Combustion Characteristics of The Closed Cycle Diesel Engine)

  • In order to obtain underwater or underground power sources, the closed cycle diesel engine is operated in the non air-breathing circuit system where the major species of the working fluid include oxygen, argon, and recycled exhaust gas. In the present study, the closed cycle diesel engine is designed to operate at the intake pressure between 2 and 3 bar. For operating in the open-cycle and closed-cycle situations, experimental apparatus using this diesel engine is made with ACAP as data acquisition system. In open, semi-open, and closed cycle modes, the predicted p-$\theta$ and P-V are compared with load bank power. Computation have been performed for wide range of major experimental parameters such as the specific fuel and oxygen concentrations, fuel conversion efficiency and polytropic exponent, IMEP and maximum cylinder pressure.
