  • Recently power plants and oil refineries are focusing on capacity enlargement for better efficiency through higher temperature and higher pressure. Thickness of boiler tubes becomes lessened due to oxidation and erasion caused by high temperature bums gas flowing over tubes outside. Accordingly, mechanical stress of tubes is increasing and that is a critical factor to make a crack and fracture. To prevent those sorts of accidents, aging assessment for proper periodic repair and replacement should be conducted reliably and reasonably. We performed IIT test on Cr-Mo steel, one of the most heat-resistant materials for facilities in power plants, and we report the test result and the considerable effectiveness of IIT test.

  • In this study, the Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory was combined with the instrumented indentation technique (IIT) to evaluate work of adhesion and modulus of elastomeric polymer. Indentation test was used to obtain the load-displacement data for contacts between Tungsten Carbide indenter and elastomeric polymer. And the JKR contact model, contrived to take viscoelastic effects of polymer into account, was applied to compensate the contact area and the elastic modulus which Hertzian contact model would underestimate and overestimate, respectively. Besides, we could obtain the thermodynamic work of adhesion by considering the surface energy in this contact model. In order to define the relation between JKR contact area and applied load without optical measuring of contact area, we used the relation between applied load and contact stiffness by examining the correlation between JKR contact area and stiffness through dimensional analysis with 14 kinds of elastomeric polymer. From this work, it could be demonstrated that the interfacial work of adhesion and elastic modulus of compliant polymer can be obtained from a simple instrumented indentation testing without area measurement, and provided as the main algorithm of compliant polymer characterization.

  • Different microstructures in the weld zone of a metal structure including a fusion zone and heat affected zone are formed as compared to the base material. Thus, the mechanical properties in the weld zone are different from those in the base material. As the basic data for reliably understanding the structural characteristics of welded nuclear material, the mechanical properties in the weld zone and base material for a Zircaloy-4 strap and Hastelloy${(R)}$-X alloy strap are measured using an instrumented indentation technique (IIT) in this study.

  • Power generating unit structures are designed and built to meet standard to secure its safety for expected life time. As the structures have been exposed to combined environment, degradation of structure material is accelerated and it can cause unexpected damage; evaluating precise mechanical properties of weak site like welded area is an essential research area as it is directly connected to safety issues. Existing measuring technique like tensile test requires specific size in testing specimen yet it is destructive method which is hard to apply on running structures. To overcome above mentioned limitation, IIT is getting limelight as it is non-destructive and simple method. In this study, latest technique is introduced to evaluate tensile property and residual stress by analyzing stress field occurs under the indenter while IIT is performed. Test on welded area, the weak site of nuclear structures have been practiced and confirmed that IIT can be usefully applied to evaluate integrity in industry.
