The Earth's total magnetic field was calculated from on board TAM(Three-Axis Magnetometer) observations of KOMPSAT-1 satellite between June 19th and 21st, 2000. The TAM's telemetry data were transformed from ECI(Earth-Centered Inertial Frame) to ECEF(Earth-Centered Earth-Fixed Frame) and then to spherical coordination. Self-induced field from the satellite bus were removed by the symmetric nature of the magnetic field. The 2-D wavenumber correlation filtering and quadrant-swapping method were applied to eliminate the dynamic components and track-line noise. To test the validity of the TAM's geomagnetic field, ${\phi}$rsted satellite's magnetic model and IGRF2000 model were used for statistical comparison. The correlation coefficients between KOMPSAT-1/${\phi}$rsted and KOMPSAT-1/IGRF2000 models are 0.97 and 0.96, respectively. The global spherical harmonic coeffi-cient was then calculated from the KOMPSAT-1 data degree and order of up to 19 and compared with those from IGRF2000, $\phi$rsted, and CHAMP models. The KOMPSAT-1 model was found to be stable to degree & order of up to 5 and it can give new information for the low frequency components of the global geomagtic field.
Solar activities ejecting high energy particles influence satellites and satellite communications as well as perturb geomagnetic fields. To understand space environments near the Earth being influenced by the Sun, we must study about the magnetosphere, the ionosphere, and the atmosphere beforehand. To study this issue, we investigate some ionospheric models, atmospheric models and geomagnetic field models : IRI(International Reference Ionosphere), PIM(Parameterized Ionospheric Model) and IGRF(International Geomagnetic Reference Field). We develop the models and build a web site to serve IRI, PIM and IGRF model on the internet so that one can easily get information of daily and global ionospheric and geomagnetic variations.
The magnetic field measurements from the KitSat-1 and KitSat-2 were tested by comparing with the IGRF model. The magnetic data have been collected by a three-axis fluxgate magnetometer on each satellite at an latitude of 1,325 km and 820 km, respectively. To avoid highly variable magnetic disturbances at the polar region, the field map has been within the limits of 50 degrees in latitude. Each data is averaged over the square of $5{\times}5$ degrees in both latitude and longitude. In these results, the relatively quiet periods were selected and the sampling rate was 30 seconds. It is shown that the results from these measurements are consistent with the IGRF map over the global surface map.
Geomagnetic data from 3-axis magnetometer and the IGRF model (tilite - eccentric dipole model) were used to determine the attitude of a satellite. We compared the values of the geomagnetic model with the magnetometer data and two attitude angles, called $\alpha$ -angle and $\beta$-angle respectively, were calculated. From these angles we calculated simple bounds, $\gamma1$ and $\gamma2$, on the true attitude angle $\gamma$, which is used to detemine attitude, between the z-axis and the local vertical. And then we investigated conditions of attitudes of UoSAT-11, 14, 22.

This paper describes the variations of geomagnetic field by analyzing the geomagnetic observation data, which spanned the period from 1918 through 1944 and the global geomagnetic model in Korea. Geomagnetic data observed at Incheon in the period of 1918~1944 and global geomagnetic model (IGRF-95) were obtained from the World Geomagnetic Data Center. In this study, the variations of geomagnetic declination is estimated as $1^\circ{50'}$ from 1918 to 2000 and the variation rate is given as the nearest 1'20"/yr. The total variation of inclination is about 38' for 82 years and the variation rate is estimated as the nearest 27"/yr."/yr.;/yr.
The Earth's total magnetic field was extracted from on board TAM (Three Axis Magnetometer) observations of KOMPSAT-1 satellite between June 19th and 21st, 2000. In the pre-processing, the TAM's telemetry data were transformed from ECI (Earth Centered Inertial frame) to ECEF (Earth Centered Earth Fixed frame) and then to spherical coordination, and self-induced magnetic field by satellite bus itself were removed by using an on-orbit magnetometer data correction method. The 2-D wavenumber correlation filtering and quadrant-swapping method were applied to the pre-processed data in order to eliminate dynamic components and track-line noise, respectively. Then, the spherical harmonic coefficients are calculated from KOMPSAT-1 data. To test the validity of the TAM's geomagnetic field, Danish/NASA/French ${\phi}$rsted satellite's magnetic model and IGRF2000 model were used for statistical comparison. The correlation coefficient between ${\phi}$rsted and TAM is 0.97 and IGRF and TAM is 0.96. It was found that the data from on board magnetometer observations for attitude control of Earth-observing satellites can be used to determinate the Earth's total magnetic field and that they can be efficiently used to upgrade the global geomagnetic field coefficients, such as IGRF by providing new information at various altitudes with better temporal and spatial coverage.
Near-earth space is composed of plasmas which embed a number of plasma waves. Space plasmas consist of electrons and multi-ion that determine local wave propagation characteristics. In multi-ion plasmas, it is difficult to find out analytic solutions from the dispersion relation in general. In this work, we have developed a model with an arbitrary magnetic field and density as well as multi-ion plasmas. This model allows us to investigate how plasma waves behave when they propagate along realistic magnetic field lines, which are assumed by IGRF(International Geomagnetic Reference Field). The results are found to be useful for the analysis of the in situ observational data in space. For instance, if waves are assumed to propagate into the polar region, from the equatorial region, our model quantitatively show how polarization is altered along earth travel path.
KIGAM has installed a FLARE+ continuous geomagnetic observation system in 1998 in Daejeon of which the IAGA identification code is DZN. The coordinates of the absolute measurement plinth precisely determined by the PDGPS(Post-Processing Differential Global Positioning System) is (127-21-37.19E, 36-22-43.96N, 45.93 m) in WGS84 for the horizontal and from the geoid surface for the vertical. Periodically we have conducted the absolute geomagnetic measurement on the plinth above. We have processed the continuous time-variation 3-axis geomagnetic data measured on arbitrary sensors' coordinates in the observatory and absolute geomagnetic data together to get as the results the time-variation H(orizontal), D(eclination), Z(vertical down), F(scalar calculated from 3 components) and P(Proton Precession Magnetometer Data). We have compared our own data with those calculated from the 10th generation IGRF(International Geomagnetic Reference Field). All the measured data in the DZN Observatory can be acquired through the website http://geomag.kigam.re.kr.

The main field component of the Earth's magnetic field was modeled from the tri-axial magnetometer onboard KOrean MultiPurpose SATellite-II (KOMPSAT-II) for the purpose of satellite attitude control. The model computed by the KOMPSAT-II magnetometer measurement data is compared with the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) model of a degree of up to 13 in spherical harmonic coefficients. The previous study with KOMPSAT-I (Kim et al. 2004) indicated a good correlation of power spectrum of spherical harmonic coefficients with respect to the degree up to 5. This study, however, showed an agreement of the degree up to 8-9 of the coefficient power spectrum and a discrepancy between degrees 10 and 13. We have concluded that relevant data selection process, removal of the external field from the data in the high latitude region, an accuracy of the magnetometer all play an important role in finding a coherence with the IGRF model. This study will be extended to the secular variation model of geomagnetism if longer-period data become available.
The vehicle's heading angle determination is formulated and the proposed method based on geometry engages the magnetometer and the GPS. The resulting maximum determination accuracy of 0.3deg over the entire earth as a standard deviation is obtained for a magnetometer with measurement error of 1nT.
