  • Although the Distributed Coordination Function is the fundamental access protocol of IEEE 802.11, it cannot meet the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements in general. So, the Point Coordinate Function is provided to support QoS related services. However, it has inherent problems. Access point (AP) has no knowledge of the queue status and instantaneous channel condition of stations in the system. In this paper we propose an efficient and versatile polling scheduler that shows excellent throughput and fairness performance. Comparison with well known polling schemes is provided through computer simulation under various channel situations including error prone environments.

  • IEEE 802.11 DCF(Distributed Coordination Function)의 성능은 채널에 접근하기 위하여 경쟁하는 단말수에 큰 영향을 받는다.

  • This paper suggests the new network scanning algorithm that makes use of measurement pilot of IEEE 802.11k. The purpose of suggesting this algorithm is to improve the existing network scanning schemes. After introducing new algorithm, this paper shows the difference of time property and energy property between former scanning schemes and new scheme with simulation results. Passive scan has a merit of low-power consumption but it takes too long time to fulfill whole scanning. On the contrary, an advantage of active scan is speed but it consumes more battery power than passive scan. By using measurement pilot's smaller interval than beacon interval, the suggested algorithm can consume less power than active scan does, and also make shorter scanning delay than passive scan does.

  • To improve the efficiency of wireless channel, IEEE 802.11ac uses the DL MU-MIMO MAC scheme through which an AP transmits multiple frames to different mobile nodes simultaneously. IEEE 802.11ac DL MU-MIMO MAC needs a new step, called as TXOP sharing, between legacy IEEE 802.11n DL SU-MIMO's two operations, the obtaining an EDCA TXOP and the transmitting multiple frames for EDCA TXOP. In the TXOP sharing operation, both wireless channel destinations and frames transmitted for its TXOP period should are determined. So this paper deals with the TXOP sharing for improving IEEE 802.11ac MAC performance. However, the EDCA priority based method mentioned by IEEE 802.11ac standard document not fair among the buffers and the frames of buffers, and occurs in high_loss rate and high_delay about specific buffers. In this paper, we propose a new scheme of the TXOP sharing with sequencing p-AC, s-AC in similar properties, and all S-AC. This method provides a differentiated service without damage of EDCA characteristics.

  • The increase of smartphone users have made mobile carriers offload increasingly congested traffic of 3/4G by providing Wi-Fi hot-spots in the public places such as coffee shops and subway stations. In the traditional authentication in WLAN, the users should convince the service providers that they are valid customers before they use WLAN services. Since the authentication protocol is designed for service providers. Even with the mutual authentication based on the IEEE 802.1X, which is supported by IEEE 802.11 standard, it is difficult to be convinced of that the service providers really have installed the WLAN APs, which users are confronted with. An attacker can install rogue APs that masquerade as legitimate APs by copying the SSID, MAC address, etc. in order to obtain users' private information. In this paper, we introduce a method of authenticating legitimate APs for smartphone users. And we show our proposal can be well utilized for the current Wi-Fi hot-spots as a security plug-in and prove it through our experiments.

  • The IEEE 802.11 MAC (Media Access Control) Protocol supports two modes of operation, a random access mode for nonreal-time data applications processed by Distributed Coordinated Function (DCF), and a polling mode for real-time applications served by Point Coordinated Function (PCF). It is known that the standard IEEE 802.11 is insufficient to serve real-time traffic. To provide Quality of Service (QoS) of real-time traffic, we propose the Downlink-first scheduling with Earliest Due Date (EDD) in Contention Free Period (CFP) with suitable admission control. The capacity and deadline violation probability of the proposed system is analyzed and compared to the standard pair system of downlink and uplink. Analytical and simulation results show that the proposed scheme is remarkably efficient in view of the deadline violation probability.

  • Understanding and optimizing the energy consumption of wireless devices is critical to maximize the network lifetime and to provide guidelines for the design of new protocols and interfaces. In this work, we first provide an accurate analysis of the energy performance of an IEEE 802.11 WLAN, and then we derive the configuration to optimize it. We further analyze the impact of the energy configuration of the stations on the throughput performance, and we discuss under which circumstances throughput and energy efficiency can be both jointly maximized and where they constitute different challenges. Our findings are that, although an energy-optimized configuration typically yields gains in terms of throughput as compared against the default configuration, it comes with a reduction in performance as compared against the maximum-bandwidth configuration, a reduction that depends on the energy parameters of the wireless interface.

  • This paper focuses on contention-based medium access control (MAC) protocols used in wireless local area networks. We propose a novel MAC protocol called adaptive backoff tuning MAC (ABTMAC) based on IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF). In our proposed MAC protocol, we utilize a fixed transmission attempt rate and each node dynamically adjusts its backoff window size considering the current network status. We determined the appropriate transmission attempt rate for both cases where the request-to-send/clear-to-send mechanism was and was not employed. Robustness against performance degradation caused by the difference between desired and actual values of the attempt rate parameter is considered when setting it. The performance of the protocol is evaluated analytically and through simulations. These results indicate that a wireless network utilizing ABTMAC performs better than one using IEEE 802.11 DCF.
