  • In this paper, the EM wave absorber was designed and fabricated for improvement of Wireless LAN environment at 2.4 GHz. We fabricated several samples in different composition ratios of Sendust and CPE(Chlorinated Polyethylene). Absorption abilities were simulated in accordance with different thicknesses of the prepared absorbers and changed complex relative permittivity and permeability due to composition ratio. The mixing ratio of Sendust and CPE was searched as 80: 20 wt.% by experiments and simulation Then the EM wave absorber was fabricated and tested using the simulated data. As a result, the EM wave absorber was fabricated based on simulated data. Simulated and measured results agreed well. As a result, the developed EM wave absorber with thickness of 3.25 mm has absorption ability of 19 dB at 2.4 GHz.

  • The concept of energy-efficient networking has begun to spread in the past few years, gaining increasing popularity. A common opinion among networking researchers is that the sole introduction of low consumption silicon technologies may not be enough to effectively curb energy requirements. Thus, for disruptively boosting the network energy efficiency, these hardware enhancements must be integrated with ad-hoc mechanisms that explicitly manage energy saving, by exploiting network-specific features. The IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) standard is one of such efforts. EEE introduces a low power mode for the most common Ethernet physical layer standards and is expected to provide large energy savings. However, it has been shown that EEE may not achieve good energy efficiency because mode transition overheads can be significant, leading to almost full energy consumption even at low utilization levels. Coalescing techniques such as packet coalescing and interrupt coalescing were proposed to improve energy efficiency of EEE, but their implementations typically adopt a simple policy that employs a few fixed values for coalescing parameters, thus it is difficult to achieve optimal energy efficiency. The paper proposes adaptive interrupt coalescing (AIC) that adopts an optimal policy that could not only improve energy efficiency but support performance. AIC has been implemented at the sender side with the Intel 82579 network interface card (NIC) and e1000e Linux device driver. The experiments were performed at 100 M bps transfer rate and show that energy efficiency of AIC is improved in most cases despite performance consideration and in the best case can be improved up to 37% compared to that of conventional interrupt coalescing techniques.

  • In this paper, a radio resource allocation scheme for a multi-hop relay transmission in cognitive radio (CR) system is proposed to support the employment of relay nodes in IEEE 802.22 standard for wireless regional area network (WRAN). An optimization problem is formulated to maximize the number of serving secondary users (SUs) under system constraints such as time-divided frame structure for multiplexing and a single resource-unit to every relay-hop. However, due to mathematical complexity, the optimization problem is solved with a sub-optimal manner instead, which takes three steps in the order of user selection, relay/path selection, and frequency selection. In the numerical analysis, this proposed solution is evaluated in terms of service rate denoting as the ratio of the number of serving SUs to the number of service-requesting SUs. Simulation results show the condition of adopting multi-hop relay and the optimum number of relaying hops by comparing with the performance of 1-hop system.

  • Tag collection is one of the major concerns in radio frequency identification(RFID) system. All tags in RFID reader's transmission range send response message back to the reader in response to collection request message on the given rf channel. When multiple tags respond simultaneously, tag-collision may occur. Tag-collision problem is one of the most important issues in active RFID performance. To mitigate this problem, frame slotted ALOHA(FSA) anti-collision protocol is widely used in active RFID system. Several studies show that the maximum system efficiency of FSA anti-collision protocol is 36.8%. In this paper, we propose an efficient slotted CSMA/CA protocol to improve tag collection performance. We compare our protocol to the FSA anti-collision protocol. For the experiment, an 433MHz active RFID system is implemented, which is composed of an RFID reader and multiple tags. We evaluated the tag collection performance using one RFID reader and 40 tags in the real test bed. The experimental result shows that proposed protocol improves the tag collection time, round and collision probability by 18%, 37.4% and 77.8%, respectively.

  • IEEE 802.11e standardized the EDCA mechanism to support the priority based QoS. And the virtual collision handler schedules the transmission time of each MAC frame using the internal back-off window according to the access category(AC). This can provides the differentiated QoS to real-time services at the medium traffic load condition. However, the transmission delay of MAC frame for real-time services may be increased as the traffic load of best effort service increases. It becomes more critical when the real-time service uses a compressed mode video codec such as moving picture experts group(MPEG) 4 codec. That is because each frame has the different importance. That is, the I-frame has more information as compared with the P- and the B-frame. In this paper, we proposed a buffer management algorithm based on the frame importance and the delay bound. The proposed algorithm is consisted of the traffic regulator based on the dual token bucket algorithm and the active queue management algorithm. The traffic regulator reduces the transmission rate of lower AC until that the virtual collision handler can transmit an I-frame. And the active queue management discards frame based on the importance of each frame and the delay bound of head of line(HoL) frame when the channel resource is insufficient.

  • A distributed healthcare monitoring system prototype for clinical and trauma patients, was developed, using wireless sensor network node. The proposed system aimed to measure various vital physiological health parameters like ECG and body temperature of patients and elderly persons and transfer his/ her health status wirelessly in Ad-hoc network, to remote base station which was connected to doctor's PDA/PC or to a hospital's main Server using wireless sensor node. The system also aims to save the cost of healthcare facility for patients and the operating power of the system because sensor network is deployed widely and the distance from sensor to base station was shorter than in general centralized system. The wireless data communication will follow IEEE 802.15.4 frequency communication with ad-hoc routing thus enabling every motes attached to patients, to form a wireless data network to send data to base-station, providing mobility and convenience to the users in home environment.

  • Mobile WiMAX system provides broadband wireless access with a variety of services such as voice, video and data communications and providing QoS for each of these services become an important issue. In Mobile WiMAX system, it is important to allocate resources appropriately in order to support the efficient utilization of resources among various real-time and non real-time services. Although many packet scheduling schemes for real-time services in OFDMA system have been proposed, it need to be modified to apply to Mobile WiMAX system. Since Mobile WiMAX supports five types of service classes, QoS constraints of each class should be taken into consideration. In this paper, we propose an efficient packet scheduling scheme to support various services by considering the QoS constraints of each class.

  • Due to the development of cities and the increase of vehicles, effective control of parking space management service in cities is needed. However, the existing parking lot management system does not provide limited or convenient service in terms of space and time. In this paper, we propose distributed parking space management service based on large scale LPWA (Low-Power Wide-Area). The parking sensor collects parking space information from the parking lot and is transmitted over a low-power wide network. All parking data is processed and analyzed in the IoT cloud. Through a parking space management service system in all cities, users are given the temporal convenience of determining the parking space and the area efficiency of the parking space.

  • Sensor networks have emerged as an interesting and important research area in the last few years. These networks require that time be synchronized more precisely than in traditional Internet applications. In this paper, we compared and analyzed the performance of the RBS and TDP mechanisms in the view of the number of generated messages and the synchronization accuracy. The reason that we chose be RBS ad the TDP mechanism to be compared is because the RES is an innovative method to achieve the high accurate synchronization. And TDP is a new method taking over the NTP method which has been used widely in the Internet. We simulated the performance of two methods assuming the IEEE 802.11 CSMA/CA MAC. As for the number of nodes in the sensor networks, two situations of 25 (for the small size network) and 100 (for the large size network) nodes are used. In the aspect of the number of messages generated for the synchronization, TDP is far better than RBS. But, the synchronization accuracy of RBS is far higher than that of TDP. We cm conclude that in a small size sensor networks requiring very high accuracy, such as an application of very high speed objects tracking in a confined space, the RBS is more proper than TDP even though the RBS may generate more traffic than TDP. But, in a wide range sensor networks with a large number of nodes, TDP is more realistic though the accuracy is somewhat worse than RBS because RBS may make so many synchronization messages, and then consume more energies at each node. So, two mechanisms may be used selectively according to the required environments, without saying that the one method is always better than the other.

  • The sensors attached on/in a person are moved since human body frequency changes their activity, therefore in wireless body area networks, nodal mobility and non-line-of-sight condition will impact on performance of networks such as energy efficiency and reliable communication. We then proposed schemes which study on forwarding decisions against frequent change of topology and channel conditions to increase reliable connections and improve energy efficiency. In this work, we control the size of packets, forwarding rate based on ratio of input links and output links at each node. We also robust the network topology by extending the peer to peer IEEE 802.15.4-based. The adaptive topology from chain-based to grid-based can optimal our schemes. The simulation shows that these approaches are not only extending network lifetime to 48.2 percent but also increase around 6.08 percent the packet delivery ratio. The "hot spots" problem is also resolved with this approach.
