  • The IEEE 802.15.4 and IEEE 802.15.7 standard are the typical of low rate wireless and Visible Light Wireless personal area networks. Its Medium Access Control protocol can support the QoS traffic flows for real-time application through guaranteed time slots (GTS) in beacon mode. However, how to achieve a best allocation scheme is not solved clearly. The current analytical models of IEEE 802.15.4 MAC reported in the literature have been mainly developed under the assumption of saturated traffic or non-bursty unsaturated traffic conditions. These assumptions don't capture the characteristics of bursty multimedia traffic. In this paper, we propose a new analytical model for GTS allocation with burst Markov modulated ON-OFF arrival traffic.

  • In spite of the large interest in the 802.15.4 standard, no realistic experimental research of its behaviour exists to date except a few works by simulations and analytical modeling. In this paper, we have established realistic environment of IEEE 802.15.4 network and analyze its behaviour under various conditions as like 1) maximum throughput of 802.15.4 MAC, 2) MAC fairness. and 3) throughput and m rate under co-existence of 802.11 Wi-Fi wireless networks.

  • In this paper the platform system for IEEE 802.15.4 Low Rate WPAN is designed and fabricated. IEEE 802.15.4 Low Rate WP AN system serves the functions and realization of home-area network. According to the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, there are two modes, One is BPSK modulation in 868/915MHz frequency band. The other is O-QPSK modulation in 2.45GHz frequency band. In this paper we implemented the platform system mounted in one PCB board in 868/915MHz frequency band of IEEE 802.15.4 Low Rate WPAN system. We measured that the platform system which consists of digital part and RF part has good performance. Also RF part is realized by design and fabrication of the RF transceiver IC. The key issue is to make the platform system which provides the function of Low Rate WPAN system to meet the requirement of IEEE 802.15.4 standards.

  • As Smart Device research processes, the needs of information security in light devices is increasing. For example, Zigbee provide Information Security by applying $AES-CCM^*$ defined IEEE 802.15.4 standard. However, according to information security law in Korea, only devices with KCMVP certification can be used in government organization and facilities. Therefore, this paper provide a solution to apply ARIA-CCM and ARIA-GCM for KCMVP in reserved field of IEEE 802.15.4 standard. For analyzing performance, we provide the speed test result of ARIA-CCM and ARIA-GCM comparing with $AES-CCM^*$.

  • Times New RomanThe utilization of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the smart grid application can construct efficient and reliable electrical grid. IEC 61850 was adopted as the standard for smart grid exchanging the information required in an electric power utility. However, applying technologies like IEC 61850 using Ethernet to the automation of small distribution substation directly may cost more than the value of the small distribution substation itself. IEEE 802.15.4 technology attracts attention in the field of power utility automation because of low installation cost and ease of installation. Studies are conducted, which use IEEE 802.15.4 in less strict D1 small distribution substation. This study applied IEEE 802.15.4 to the small distribution substation and conducted performance evaluation using the actual equipment. This study determined the scope of application of IEEE 802.15.4 by conducting a comparative analysis of the message type in IEC 61850.

  • The superframe structure of IEEE 802.15.4, an international standard for low rate WPAN, is composed of CAP(Contention access period) and CFP(Contention free period). CAP is the contention-based access period, while CFP is contention-free access period for supporting QoS by allocating fixed bandwidth. The standard can support QoS for only a few devices, because the maximum number of GTSs is 7. Furthermore, as the value of BO (Beacon order) or SO (Superframe order) increases, the size of a time slot increases. This makes it difficult to precisely allocate bandwidth for any device, because the bandwidth is allocated by the unit of GTS. The proposed scheme of this paper can reduce the waste of BW in CFP by adaptively reducing the size of a time slot in CFP as the value of BO or SO increases and increase the number of GTSs to 127 by modifying the standard. The performance analysis shows that the proposed scheme can dramatically increase the bandwidth utilization during the CFP when comparing with IEEE 802.15.4.

  • In IEEE 802.15.4 beacon-enabled mode, performance decreases as the number of devices competing in the contention access period(CAP) increases. In this letter, we propose partitioned contention access mechanism(PCAM) to compensate performance degradation. In PCAM, the PAN coordinator divides CAP into two sub-periods and activity of devices is delimited in their assigned sub-periods. Since PCAM reduces the number of devices which compete at the same time by half, collision probability between transmitted frames can be reduced. In addition, devices can save their power consumption because PCAM shorten the duration that devices stay in active state into half. We perform simulations to compare the performance of PCAM with that of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. From the result, PCAM yields better performance than IEEE 802.15.4 standard.

  • This paper introduces two functions added to the current version of ns-2 simulator for better accuracy of IEEE 802.15.4 network simulations. The first one is to automatically place hidden nodes over the ring topology in which the coordinator is centered, when the number of hidden nodes and total number of nodes is given. Collisions of signals can be distinguished into the trace file according to the ways of participation of hidden nodes. The second one is the CCA deferment algorithm described in IEEE 802.15.4-2006 standard which is not implemented in the current version of ns-2. Owing to these additional functions, we can carry out the precise analysis of the performance effects of hidden nodes and CCA deferment algorithm on 802.15.4 networks. Simulation results present at least 66% of performance degradation in throughput and drastic increase of collision probability up to 90% from 65% by just a single hidden node. Besides, 2006 standard for CCA deferment algorithm gives 19% lower collision probability and 38% higher performance.

  • In this paper, we propose the scheduling scheme of IEEE802.15.4e TSCH which is not specified in standard specification. The proposed scheme schedules the link by cooperating among the devices. A new device scans EBs(Enhanced Beacons) from network. An advertiser device broadcasts an enhanced beacon frame including links information on allocated channel offset and time-slots, and a new device can determine its own channel offset and time-slot. It's performance on maximum throughput and minimum delay is evaluated by comparing the proposed approach with a typical single channel IEEE802.15.4.
