  • In this paper, we introduce the PB/MC-CDMA (Partial Block/Multi-Carrier-Code Division Multiple Access) system to mitigate inter-cell interference (ICI) and enhance user capacity in the small cell environment. In 5G mobile communications, the number of devices connected to the network is expected to increase exponentially with the expansion of the IoT (Internet of Things) services. In addition, each device is expected to be required by the various data rates by their content types. In LTE/LTE-A, there are some limitations that large scale connectivity and supporting various data rates. Therefore, we introduce a PB/MC-CDMA physical layer system which is suitable for the small cell environment, and evaluate the performance in the multi cell environment which is affected by ICI. Through computer simulation results, we demonstrate the effectiveness of PB/MC-CDMA for the small cell environment.

  • Small cells such as pico or femto cells are promising as a solution to cope with higher traffic explosion and the large number of users. However, the users within small cells are likely to suffer severe inter-cell interference (ICI) from neighboring base stations (BSs). To tackle this, several papers suggest BS transmit power on/off control algorithms which increase edge user throughput. However, these algorithms require centralized coordinator and have high computational complexity. This paper makes a contribution towards presenting fully distributed and low complex joint BS on/off control and user scheduling algorithm (FDA) by selecting on/off pattern of BSs. Throughput the extensive simulations, we verify the performance of our algorithm as follows: (i) Our FDA provides better throughput performance of cell edge users by 170% than the algorithm without the ICI management. (ii) Our FDA catches up with the performance of optimal algorithm by 88-96% in geometric average throughput and sufficiently small gap in edge user throughput.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel interference alignment transceiver for multi-cell MIMO downlink channels with arbitrary number of cells and users per cell. We design the receive beamformer to align the interference from undesired base stations to the effective inter-cell interference (ICI) channels. Subsequently, we design the transmit precoder which can nulllify the interference from the corresponding base station. The proposed transceiver design can attain the degrees of freedom (DOF) equal to the number of streams per user. Accordingly, we investigate conditions for the antenna configuration. From numerical results, we confirm that the proposed transceiver design can achieve higher DOF than the conventional scheme under equal antenna configuration.

  • This paper proposes a method to extend Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI) canceling Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) receivers for 5G mobile systems to spatial multiplexing 2×2 MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) systems to support high-speed ground transportation services by linear motor cars traveling at 500 km/h. In Japan, linear-motor high-speed ground transportation service is scheduled to begin in 2027. To expand the coverage area of base stations, 5G mobile systems in high-speed moving trains will have multiple base station antennas transmitting the same downlink (DL) signal, forming an expanded cell size along the train rails. 5G terminals in a fast-moving train can cause the forward and backward antenna signals to be Doppler-shifted in opposite directions, so the receiver in the train may have trouble estimating the exact channel transfer function (CTF) for demodulation. A receiver in such high-speed train sees the transmission channel which is composed of multiple Doppler-shifted propagation paths. Then, a loss of sub-carrier orthogonality due to Doppler-spread channels causes ICI. The ICI Canceller is realized by the following three steps. First, using the Demodulation Reference Symbol (DMRS) pilot signals, it analyzes three parameters such as attenuation, relative delay, and Doppler-shift of each multi-path component. Secondly, based on the sets of three parameters, Channel Transfer Function (CTF) of sender sub-carrier number n to receiver sub-carrier number l is generated. In case of n≠l, the CTF corresponds to ICI factor. Thirdly, since ICI factor is obtained, by applying ICI reverse operation by Multi-Tap Equalizer, ICI canceling can be realized. ICI canceling performance has been simulated assuming severe channel condition such as 500 km/h, 8 path reverse Doppler Shift for QPSK, 16QAM, 64QAM and 256QAM modulations. In particular, 2×2MIMO QPSK and 16QAM modulation schemes, BER (Bit Error Rate) improvement was observed when the number of taps in the multi-tap equalizer was set to 31 or more taps, at a moving speed of 500 km/h and in an 8-pass reverse doppler shift environment.

  • Coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission adopt the Base Stations (BS) cooperatively process User Equipment (UE) connected to multi-points to improve UEs spectral efficiency at the cell edge and eliminate the inter-cell interference (ICI). This technology is important for UEs at the cell edge. Considering the real environment, energy consumption and cost situation, we propose in a Local C-RAN architecture deployment of CoMP and observed its spectral efficiency and Signal-to-Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR) in intra-site CoMP scenarios. Simulation results show that this approach has significantly enhanced than Non-CoMP.

  • For alleviating the low spectrum efficiency problem of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), due to the strong inter-cell-interference (ICI) at cell's edge, we introduce comb-spectrum code division multiple access (CS-CDMA) into broadband OFDM system at downlink channel for enabling the use of entire spectrum for seamless coverage. In addition, we develop a new method, called orthogonal cell code (OCC) scheme, to assist CS-CDMA for nullifying the ICI from contiguous cells. In system operation, each of the conventional cells is divided into an outer cell and an inner cell, and a mobile station (MS) should access to the CS-CDMA when it is in the outer cell and access to OFDM when it is in the inner cell. This study investigates the spectrum efficiency of using CS-CDMA and makes a comparison with that of long term evolution (LTE) in the following cases; (1) under an assumption of perfect channel state information and (2) based on channel estimates at a MS station. The results show the great advantage of utilizing the proposed system.

  • In this paper, to improve spectral efficiency and mitigate interference in coordinated millimeter-wave systems, we proposes an optimal user group and beam selection scheme. The proposed scheme improves spectral efficiency by mitigating intra- and inter-cell interferences (ICI). By examining the effective channel capacity for all possible user combinations, user combinations and beams with minimized ICI can be selected. However, implementing this in a dense environment of cells and users requires highly complex computational abilities, which we have investigated applying multiclass classifiers based on machine learning. Compared with the conventional scheme, the numerical results show that our proposed scheme can achieve near-optimal performance, making it an attractive option for these systems.

  • In this paper, the channel estimation and pilot sequence design technique of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in multi-cell environments are studied for situations in which the inter cell interference (ICI) is the dominant channel impairment. We design pilot sequence aiming at minimizing mean square error and propose the channel estimation technique correspond to the designed pilot sequences. The proposed pilot sequences employ the sequences with good correlation properties such as Chu sequence and through simulations, it is shown that channel estimation algorithm using designed pilot sequence is effective for mitigating the ICI.

  • As various services requiring high data rate are supported by introducing LTE/LTE-adv., mobile traffic increases rapidly. To cope with the continuous growth of traffic demand, small cell technology is considered as one of the most promising one. Small cell can increase system capacity by increasing the number of base stations with reduced cell radius. In this paper, we analyze the effect of cell densification with small cells in terms of SINR and average UE throughput considering cell split and the number of UE per unit area. As the cell becomes smaller, SINR degradation arises from high ICI(Inter Cell Interference) and we evaluate the effect of interference mitigation scheme in small cell environment where the proper interference mitigation technique is applied.

  • Base Station Cooperation (BSC) has been a promising technique for combating the Inter-Cell Interference (ICI) by exchanging information through a high-speed optical fiber back-haul to increase the diversity gain. In this paper, we propose a novel pilot symbol assisted data fusion scheme for distributed Uplink BSC (UBSC) based on Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm. Furthermore, the proposed scheme exploits the pre-defined pilot symbols as the sample of transmitted symbols to constitute a sub-optimal Weight Calculation (WC) model. To circumvent the non-linear programming problem of the proposed sub-optimal model, DE algorithm is employed for searching the proper fusion weights. Compared with the existing equal weights based soft combining scheme, the proposed scheme can adaptively adjust the fusion weights according to the accuracy of cooperative information, which remains the relatively low computational complexity and back-haul traffic. Performance analysis and simulation results show that, the proposed scheme can significantly improve the system performance with the pilot settings of the existing standards.
