  • This study was designed to explore students' instrumentalization in relation to the van Hiele's teaching method within a technology environment using GeoGebra. To carry out the study, a total of 4 lesson units was developed based on van Hiele teaching method for two slow learners in Gyeonggi province, Korea. The results of study were as follows. Instrumentalization of students was actualized from preparation, to adaptation, and to application stages. In preparation, and adaptation stages, depending on visualization, students used a trial-and-error method a lot, however in application stage the role of GeoGebra was just to check the solution of what they conjectured. Therefore, a teacher should prepare geometric tasks according to the processes of instrumentalization based on geometric teaching method. During instrumentalization and instrumentation of users, usage scheme(US) and instrumented action scheme(IAS) should be concrete.

  • The organization of eukayotic chromatin into specific conformation that are associated with transcription, replication, reapir and other nuclear processes are achieved via a series of DNA-protein interaction. These interactions are mediated by a range of DNA-binding domains such as SAP domain et at. By searching S. pombe genomic DNA database, we have found a gene named SAPuvs (SAP UV Sensitive) whose amino acid sequence is in part similar to SAP domain of Arabidopsis poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase and Ku7O. Knock-out cell of S. pombe SAPuvs gene was constructed using Ura4 as a selection marker. Survival analysis of knock-out cell indicated that treatment with UV significantly reduces the survival compared to wild type cell. Potentiation of MMS-induced cytotoxicity by 3AB post-treatment was observed in wild type cells, but not in knock-out cells. These data suggested that the protein encoded by SAPuvs gene is associated with chromatin reorganization during DNA repair.

  • Purpose: Walking type cultivator used for weeding generated excessive handle vibration as well as bouncing motion depending on the weeding speed. This research was conducted to define a design factor of the rotary weeding blades for reducing soil reaction forces as well as hand vibration. Methods: The motion and forces acting on the rotary blades were reviewed to find out the most influencing parameter on hand vibration. The installation angle (IA) of the blade was selected and analyzed to determine the condition of no reaction force less. For removing the unnecessary upward soil reaction, the design factor theory of weeding blade was suggested based on geometrics and dynamics. For evaluation of design factor theory, the experiment in situ was performed base on ISO 5349:1. The vibration $a_{hv}$ and theoretical value $X_{MF}$ were compared with two groups that one was positive group ($X_{MF}$ > 0) and the other was negative group ($X_{MF}$ < 0). Results: $X_{MF}$ was derived from rotational velocity, forward velocity, disk diameter, weeding depth, blade's width and IA of blade. Two groups had significant difference (p < 0.05). In aspect of the group mean total exposure duration, positive group was 17.53% bigger than negative group. When disk radius 100, 150 and 200 mm, minimum IAs were $4{\sim}27^{\circ}$, $3{\sim}15^{\circ}$ and $2{\sim}10^{\circ}$, respectively. A spread sheet program which calculated XMF was developed by Excel 2013. Conclusions: According to this result, minimum IA of weeding blade for soil reaction reduction could be obtained. For reduction hand-arm vibration and power consumption, minimum IA is needed.

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a disorder characterized by repetitive episode of upper airway collapse during sleep. Recent studies showed that not only the anatomic factors but the physiologic factors of the upper airway also have effcts on the occurrence of apnea and that the genioglossus muscle also plays an important role in the maintenance of the upper airway. A variety of therapies were performed to treat OSA, and among them the use of mandibular repositioning appliances showed reasonable results. But there is still a lack of research on the structural and physiological mechanism upon the use of mandibular repositioning appliances. The author selected 26(male 17, female 9) OSA patients that came to the Yonsei University Dental Hospital, Department of Orthodontics, and 20 normal adults (male 10, female 10) and took cephalometric radiographs of them in a supine position before and after the placement of the mandibular repositioning appliance to see the structural changes of the upper airway and compare the therapeutic effects between the two groups. We also studied the waking genioglossus muscle activity in OSA patients and investigated the difference in the electromyogram of the genioglosssus muscle upon the change in body posture and the use of mandibular repositioning appliance. Following results were obtained. 1. Among the cephalometric measurements of the upper airway structure, the length of the soft palate, maximum thickness of the soft Palate and SPAS, MAS, VAL, H-H1, MP-H showed statistically significant differences between the normal and OSA groups, but the IAS and EAS showed no statistically significant differences between the two groups. 2. In both the normal and OSA groups, as the epiglottis moved forward on wearing the mandibular repositioning appliance, the epiglottis level of the upper airway increased and the maximum thickness of the soft palate changed and the hyoid bone also moved forward, but the IAS in both groups showed various results and the effect of the mandibular repositioning appliance on the structure of the upper airway was different in the two groups. 3. Upon changing the position, the electromyogram of the genioglossus muscle showed a increasing tendency but there was no statistically significant differences, and when the mandibular repositioning appliance were worn there was a statistically significant increase in the electromyogram of the genioglossus muscle in both the upright and supine positions. The mandibular repositioning appliances not only have an effect on the anatomical structure of the upper airway but also on the physiology of the upper airway. There are different responses to the use of mandibular repositioning appliance between the normal and OSA groups therefore it could be considered to have the different physiology of the upper airway between the two groups.

  • This article discusses the contributions of the leader Oswald Veblen, who was the president of AMS during 1923-1924. In 2006, Korea ranked 12th in SCIE publications in mathematics, more than doubling its publications in less than 10 years, a successful model for a country with relatively short history of modern mathematical research. Now there are 192 four-year universities in Korea. Some 42 of these universities have Ph.D. granting graduate programs in mathematics and/or mathematical education in Korea. Rapid growth is observed over a broad spectrum including a phenomenal performance surge in International Mathematical Olympiad. Western mathematics was first introduced in Korea in the 17th century, but real significant mathematical contributions by Korean mathematicians in modern mathematics were not much known yet to the world. Surprisingly there is no Korean mathematician who could be found in MaC Tutor History Birthplace Map. We are at the time, to have a clear vision and leadership for the 21st century. Even with the above achievement, Korean mathematical community has had obstacles in funding. Many people thinks that mathematical research can be done without funding rather unlike other science subjects, even though they agree fundamental mathematical research is very important. We found that the experience of early American mathematical community can help us to give a vision and role model for Korean mathematical community. When we read the AMS Notice article 'The Vision, Insight, and Influence of Oswald Veblen' by Steve Batterson, it answers many of our questions on the development of American mathematics in early 20th century. We would like to share the story and analyze its meaning for the development of Korean Mathematics of 21st century.

  • Laboratory scale study for an air injection and flowing aspect of groundwater saturated zone was conducted for three sediment grains (AMG 0.34, 1.38, 3.89 mm diameter). Air flow for AMG (Average Modal diameter Grains) 0.34 mm diameter grain size provides indication of pattern of channelized air flow in saturated zone and expansion state in above saturated zone. Maximum area of influence is approximately l5.2%/$\textrm{m}^2$for AMG of 0.34 mm diameter. For AMG of 1.38 mm and 3.89 mm modal diameter grains, air flow are pervasive air flow, forming a symmetrical cone of influence around the injection point. Maximum areas affected are 37%/$\textrm{m}^2$for AMG 1.38 mm diameter and 30%/$\textrm{m}^2$for AMG 3.89 mm diameter. AMG 1.38 mm and 3.89 mm diameter grains show onset of collapse and approach to steady state in above saturated zone, respectively. In this study, optimal sites for in situ air sparging, may be grain diameters between about AMG 1.5-2.5 mm diameter.

  • The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of NT time on the rate of fusion a and suhseguent development In vitro and determine the optimal strength and duration of DC pulse for electrofusion of IVF donor embryo nuclei and IVM recipient oocytes. The recipient oocytes were enucleated 25 ~ 2Sh after IVM and further cultured for 18 ~ 20h prior to fusion for oocyte aging. IVF embryos as donor nuclei were C co cultured with BOEC for 16- to 32-cell stage development. The transfer time of donor bIas tomeres was 1~3h post-enucleation in early NT group and 1 ~ 18h post-enucleation in late NT group, respectively and fusion was performed 43~4Sh post-IVM. The fusion rate did not differ between the early NT and late NT group, but the rate of cleavage and 8- to 16-cell stage embryos in the late NT group was more higher than that in the early NT group. The fusion, cleavage and M+B development was high from O.7SkV /cm DC than from 1.0kV /cm DC voltage, resulting in 17.6% M+B from 0.75kV /cm DC voltage. No difference in fusion rate was among pulse durations, but 50 and 70 usec pulse duration showed slight high cleavage and M + B d development. The results indicate that the best NT time of IVF donor blastomeres into the enucleated oocytes was 42~44 post-IVM and the most suitable condition for electrofusion was a single 0.7SkV /cm DC voltage for SO~70$\mu$sec.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there was a difference between men and women in conceptualizing a calling in childrearing through social network analysis. The results are as follows. IAs a result of the study, it was found that mothers showed significantly larger networks and higher density than fathers did, indicating that mothers, more than fathers do, experience parenting and child-rearing based more on a concept of calling in childrearing. Parents directly linked responsibility, children's growth, direction, commitment, and parental character to a calling in childrearing. In addition, mothers also linked a sense of identity and parental growth to it. In the case of fathers, only four concepts were directly connected with a calling in childrearing. This shows that mothers, in comparison to fathers, connect essential self-concepts, such as identity as a parent and themes of growth, to a calling in childrearing. In centrality, similar concepts also were evaluated as important. The common parental closeness centrality is composed of responsibility, child growth, direction, and belief starting from the center. In the case of fathers, child growth, responsibility, and belief were evaluated in order, and in the case of mothers, responsibility, parental growth, and identity were evaluated as relatively important concepts.

  • The objective of this study was to examine the cell number of Total, ICM and TE cells of bovine blastocysts according to development progression cultured in CR1 medium, which was reported as successfully supporting medium for preimplantaion bovine embryo development to the blastocyst stage, by differential labelling of the nuclei with immunosurgery and polynucleot-ide-specific fluorochromes. Blastocysts were obtained at day 8 after in vitro fertilization and classified to early, middle, expanded stage according to the developmental morphology; blastocoel expansion and zona thickness. Also, bias tocysts in the same category were divided into two parts to check the Total cell number by using bisbenzimide only and ICM, TE and Total cell number by using immunosurgery and two polynucleotide-specific fluorochromes. 1) The development rate of blastocysts at day 8 after in vitro fertilization was 29.3% and classified bIas tocysts to early, middle, expanded and hatching stage were 8.7, 9.9, 7.6 and 3.1%, respectively. 2) The numbers of total blastomere using bisbenzimide in the classified blastocysts to early, middie and expanded were 46.9${\pm}$8.6, 66.2${\pm}$12.5 and 122.8 ${\pm}$ 14.4, respectively. This indicated that CR1 is a appropriate culture medium for bovine embryo development. 3) The count of ICM and TE cell number by using differential labelling with immunosurgery and polynucleotide-specific fluorochromes in the classified blastocysts to early, middle and expanded; ICM cell numbers of were 12.8${\pm}$5.9, 26.3${\pm}$8.4 and 35.5${\pm}$15.0, respectively and TE cell numbers were 30.5${\pm}$5.0, 4 41.3${\pm}$8.2 and 81.1${\pm}$13.4, respectively. These results presented that the increase of ICM and TE cell numbers averaged two and three doublings between early and expanded blastocyst stage and also total cell number counted from ICM nuclei and TE nuclei by using differential label-ling showed the increase pattern with development advance level and the results were similar to total cell number obtained from bisbenzimide treatment only. Therefore, the differential labelling of ICM and TE nuclei in situ is a very useful technique to evaluate embryo qualities and can be used as an indicator on study of preim-plantation embryo development.
