  • The purpose of this study was to analyze, from a kinematical point of view, the high jump techniques of three women's high jump winners at the IAAF World Championships, Daegu 2011. The trends for the techniques of the world's top high jumpers were examined, with a view toward adapting these techniques to the physical characteristics of Korean women's high jumpers. It was valuable that Di Martino, who was the shortest in height, was able to win a medal by using a single arm swing take-off technique, along with a half flexed leading leg swing to attain a deep arch and clear the bar. This showed that the world's top athletes used jumping techniques with no decrease in the run-up velocity at the take-off. Furthermore, It appeared that the knee joint angle at take-off had a direct effect on the body position at take-off (H1).

  • The purpose of this study was to compare selected kinematic variables between male medalists and a Korean male javelin thrower at the IAAF World Championships, Daegu 2011. The three medalists and one Korean javelin thrower that participated in the Championships were videotaped using three high-speed cameras (300 frames/s, EX-F1 Exilim, Casio, Japan). The results showed that the release and attitude angles of the Korean male javelin thrower (KMJT) were greater than that of the medalists, whereas the attack angle of the KMJT was smaller than that of the medalists. This study also found that the KMJT clearly had a lower release height than the medalists. As a possible adaptation of his physique to the skill, the KMJT used a small trunk inclination angle and produced greater inclination angles at his upper extremities. These results may be linked to an increase in the release angle of the KMJT. There were some difference between the KMJT and the medalists in terms of the length and duration of the delivery phase. In harmony with the shorter length of the delivery phase, its duration was shorter for the KMJT in comparison to the medalists. Because the delivery stride is considered to be a primary generator of endpoint speed, this decrease in the delivery phase time would decrease the javelin velocity at release. The amount of time taken in the delivery phase may be a critical factor to enhance a javelin thrower's performance. Thus, rhythmic movement training specifically designed for the KMJT will help him attain an optimal throwing position.

  • The purpose of this study was to perform the kinematic analyses of the women's pole vault skills in IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011. Subjects were the 1st through 8th place finishers in the pole vault. The kinematic analyses were divided into four phases: two dimensional run up analysis, and three dimensional analyses for the remaining plant, swing up, and extension phases. Run-up variables consisted of run up distance, number of steps, average step length, ratio of step length to height, average velocity at the final 5~10 m, approach position. Three variables were analyzed during plant: pole angle, center of gravity (COG) velocity, and COG takeoff angle. Swing up phase variables included: pole flection angle, COG velocity (horizontal, vertical, resultant), COG trajectory and bar approach angle of COG. Compared to the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, the average vault height increased, while run up velocity and approach position were almost unchanged. However, horizontal velocity during the last two steps of the final approach decreased noticeably compared to speeds from 1990. These results reflect the change in both technique and physical fitness in pole vaulters. During extension, the peak height of COG surpassed the clearance height by an average of 0.11m. These specific results can help coaches and athletes modify training and improve performance.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide quantified data on the throwing skills of world-class athletes and to analyze the kinematic variables for women shot-putters at the IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011. Three-dimensional motion analyses of the eight players who qualified for the final round were carried out to obtain the data. The Kwon3D XP program was used for image analysis of the kinematic data, which included the configurations of each joint. The following conclusions were arrived at. The throwing distance increased with an increase in the release speed, and a significant correlation (p <. 01) was observed between the throwing distance and release speed. It was also shown that players using the spin technique increased their release speed with a fast shoulder-rotation-angle speed. The release height varied with their height and showed a significant difference with the record. This showed that the release angle did not greatly influence the record for the game, but varied with their technical and physical characteristics. Therefore, an increase in release speed is required to improve the record.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide scientific information to track and field coaches and athletes through the analyses of the biomechanics characteristics of the top 4 sprinters in the men's 100 m final in the IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011. Twelve video cameras (Sony, Japan) were used to capture the mid portion of the race (40 m - 70 m) with a sampling frequency of 60Hz. Biomechanical variables including the right ankle, knee and hip angles, the trunk angle, and the velocity of center of mass (COM) in the running direction, were calculated with the Kwon 3D program (Visol, Korea). Correlation coefficients between the COM velocity and each variables were calculated using Matlab 2008a (MathWorks, USA) at an alpha level of 0.05. The findings indicated that Yohan Blake (JAM) showed greater range of motion at the ankle and hip. Walter Dix(USA) showed greater knee and trunk movement, and Kim Collins (SKN) showed more dorsi-flexed and extended trunk angles during the race. Finally, Christophe Lemaitre (FRA) showed more plantar-flexed ankle with a less trunk motion, throughout the analyzed race.

  • In this study, thermal environment changes for a marathon course of IAAF World Championship, Daegu 2011 were modeled to provide improvements of thermal environment, so that runners could have the maximum condition and citizens pleasant streets. The three biggest size of intersections were selected for the study. Envi-met, 3G microclimate model, were used for a thermal environment analysis and three different cases - present status, planting roadside tree scenario, and roof-garden scenario - were compared. The followings are the results of the study. 1. The highest thermal distribution were shown at 1 p.m., but there was no significant difference between a thermal distribution at 1 p.m. and that at 5 p.m. since a heat flux from buildings affects thermal distributions rather than insolation does. 2. Tree planting or adding environmental friendly factors might lead a temperature drop effect, but the effect was not significant for areas covered with impermeability packing materials such as concrete or asphalt (especally, for Site case 2) 3. The combination of tree planting and adding environmental friendly factors also brought a temperature drop effect (Site 1 and 2) and this case showed even better result if green spaces (especially, parks) were closed.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the velocity conversion coefficient and invariance for the optimal phase ratio on the performance of the women's triple jump. Methods : Three-dimensional kinematic data were obtained from the three finalists of the women's triple jumper competition at the 2011 Daegu IAAF World Championships. Computer simulations were performed using the biomechanical model of the triple jump to optimize the phase ratio for the longest actual distance for all athletes with altered velocity conversion coefficients. Results : Top elite triple jumpers showed better technical consistency at the phase ratio. Also, no consistent relationship was observed between the loss in horizontal velocity and the gain in vertical velocity across supporting the three phase. In addition, regardless of the magnitude A1, all athletes were optimized with jump-dominated technique. Finally, as the magnitude of A1 increased, the athletes showed better performance. The obtained overall distance jumped showed the longest actual distance when the optimal phase ratio was transferred from hop-dominated to jump-dominated(the step ratio was 30%~31%), and when the optimal phase ratio was transferred from balanced to jump-dominated(the step ratio was 27%~29%). Conclusion : Future studies need to be conducted in order to explore the active landing motion and the inclination angle of the body with the velocity conversion coefficient simultaneously at each supporting phase.

  • This study had two purposes. The first was to analyze the period of the final record set by the male shot-putters in the IAAF World Championships, Daegu 2011 from the point of view of kinematics. The other was to identify an efficient movement for shot putting based on the analysis. The research used the eight finalists of in the championship as subjects. We analyzed the seven most important kinematic factors in shot putting based on the type of technique: the execution time of the delivery phase, release velocity, release angle, release, center of mass (COM) velocity, and shot trajectories. The analytical results showed the following average figures for the record 12 meters: execution time of the delivery phase: (0.19 s), release height: (2.06 m), release angle: ($34.68^{\circ}$), release velocity: (13.25 m/s), angular velocity of shoulder: ($922.38^{\circ}/s$), and angular velocity of pelvis: ($479.50^{\circ}/s$). Further, the results showed that the highest COM velocity was 2.25 m/s and the shot trajectories were close to a straight line in the release phase.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the kinematics of the women's triple jump event at the 2011 Daegu World a Chmpionships by comparing them to those of the 2009 Berlin World Championships. The kinematic data were gathered from two steps before take off to the landing using a 7-camera panorama system. The data were then divided into 3 phases for each of the 8 participants. Similar average results were found the final contestants in the Daegu and Berlin championships, 14.58 m and 14.51 m, respectively. The first step had a relatively short length percentage (29%) compared to the hop and jump (36% and 35%, respectively). At the take off, the horizontal velocity was the lowest for the step, followed by the hop and jump. These results were different from the results for the men, who had an order of hop, step, and jump. Overall, in a comparison of the Daegu and Berlin participants, the vertical speed at take off for the three events was reduced compared to the horizontal speed.
