  • The adsorption ability of dyes on chitin, a natural polymer was investigated for decolorization of dye wastewater. Chitin was manufactured in lab by decalcification in dilute aqueous HCI solution and deproteination in dilute aqueous NaOH solution with shrimp shells. Absorbance of residue solution of dyebaths after dye adsorptions of chitin were measured in varieties of dye concentration and dipping periods. Four kinds of dyestuffs were used, C.I.Acid Blue 29. C.I.Direct Blue 6, C.I.Reactive Orange 12 and C.I.Basic Red 18. When chtin 1g was dipped in 0.05% of dyebath with stirring, maximum adsorption ratio of each kind of dyes was exhibited as 91.6% for C.I.Acid Blue 29, 95% for C.I.Direct Blue 6, 58.2% for C.I.Reactive Orange 13 and 75.8% for C.I.Basic Red 19. It shows that chitin has better adsorption abilities of ionic dyes of acid, direct and basic dye than non-ionic reactive dye. And chitin has better adsorption abilities of anionic acid direct dyes than cationic basic dye because of the presence of nitrogen atoms. All kinds of dyestuffs used showed speedy absorption effects by chitin, so chitin can absorb much amount of dyes in 5 mimutes reach to equilibrium of adsorption in 2 hours after dipping. Basic dye was absorbed the most speedily in 5 minutes, although maximum adsorption ratio is not high. That reason can be thought that chitin surface is essentially negatively charged due to polar funtional groups.

  • I have conducted two testings to find out which water is better for drinking water. First, I made 20 mM L-DOPA solutions by solving L-DOPA (3,4-Dihydroxyphenylalanine) in tap water, Waters' mineral water and reverse osmotic water. Then I measured activities after adding Tyrosinase (purifide enzyme, step 3), which was extracted from Salanum melongena(mad apple), in each L-DOPA solution. Second, I solved 0.1, 0.5 and 0.9% salt in each 20 mM L-DOPA distilled water to measure activity of each salt solution. The results of the testings are as follows: 1. 10 minutes after adding Salanum melongena(mad apple) tyrosinase in each L-DOPA solution, activity of Waters' mineral water was 0.867 tap water 0.777 and reverse osmotic water 0.742. 2. Activity of Waters' mineral water was higher than that of tap water by 10.4% and higher then reverse osmotic by 14.4%. 3. Activity of Waters' mineral water was much higher than that of 0.9% salt water by 41.8%. 4. The optimum pH of Salanum melongena (mad apple) tyrosinase is 9.0. Most enzymes working in the human metabolism are alkaline and body fluids' pH also alkaline. In conclusion, an alkaline water is believed better than an acidic water for drinking.

  • An experimental study has been performed regarding heat and mass transfer in a falling film absorber of domestic small-sized absorption chiller/heater. Components were concentrically arranged in cylindrical form : from the center, with a series of low temperature generator, absorber and evaporator. The arrangement of such helical-typed heat exchangers allows to make the system more compact as compared to conventional one. Experimental measurements were conducted with a helical absorber using $LiBr+LiI+LiNO_3+LiCl$ and LiBr solutions. As a result, the heat and mass flux performance of $LiBr+LiI+LiNO_3+LiCl$ solution shows the tendency of $2{\sim}5%$ increase. Therefore, $LiBr+LiI+LiNO_3+LiCl$ solution can be taken consideration into applying to small-sized absorption chiller/heater because of using without crystal through high concentration as 4wt% comparing with LiBr solution.

  • The Wagner coefficient is a key parameter used to describe the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling (LTB) behaviour of the I-beam, since even for a doubly-symmetric I-section with residual stress, it becomes a monosymmetric I-section due to the characteristics of the non-symmetrical distribution of plastic regions. However, so far no theoretical derivation on the energy equation and Wagner's coefficient have been presented due to the limitation of Vlasov's buckling theory. In order to simplify the nonlinear analysis and calculation, this paper presents a simplified mechanical model and an analytical solution for doubly-symmetric I-beams under pure bending, in which residual stresses and yielding are taken into account. According to the plate-beam theory proposed by the lead author, the energy equation for the inelastic LTB of an I-beam is derived in detail, using only the Euler-Bernoulli beam model and the Kirchhoff-plate model. In this derivation, the concept of the instantaneous shear centre is used and its position can be determined naturally by the condition that the coefficient of the cross-term in the strain energy should be zero; formulae for both the critical moment and the corresponding critical beam length are proposed based upon the analytical buckling equation. An analytical formula of the Wagner coefficient is obtained and the validity of Wagner hypothesis is reconfirmed. Finally, the accuracy of the analytical solution is verified by a FEM solution based upon a bi-modulus model of I-beams. It is found that the critical moments given by the analytical solution almost is identical to those given by Trahair's formulae, and hence the analytical solution can be used as a benchmark to verify the results obtained by other numerical algorithms for inelastic LTB behaviour.

  • Of the valve replacement patients operated between 1983 and June, 1984, 75 patients need more than 60 minutes of aortic cross-clamping time. 42 patients performed single valve replacement [35 MVR, 7 AVR with or without TAP] and remainder needs double valve replacement with or without TAP. The average aortic clamping time was 95.1 minutes. They need 30 minutes more extra-corporeal circulation time than aortic clamping time. The patients were divided into two groups by usage of cardioplegic solution. Group I [n=31] with Bretschneider solution and group II with potassium cardioplegic solution [M.G.H. modification] were analyzed by extra-corporeal circulation data,/CG and Echocardiography findings, and clinical data. There was no difference between two groups in Bivon addition amounts [cc/kg] and E.F. and S.F. by echocardiography, group I need 1 more electrocardioversion to convert sinus rhythm postoperatively. Also no difference could be found in patients whose preoperative C.I. was above 2.0 between two group. But significant postoperative decrease in E.F. was found in group I whose preoperative C.I. was below 2.0. Relatively longer ECC time was also needed in same group. Ischemic changes in ECG and low cardiac output syndrome was, however more prevalent in groupII. As a whole, the clinical data was satisfactory with both cardioplegic solution in clinical practice.

  • I assessed the B($a$)P content from the Ginseng extract, Red ginseng extract, and Ssangwha extract which have high viscosities. It wasn't easy to extract oil from these samples, consequently measuring of B($a$)P was difficult. In order to know the exact detecting contents, I injected standard material of B($a$)P to the above extractions and pre-treated for measurement but it was also difficult to measure of contents exactly. To improve of detecting method, I removed mucinous materials using a 85% phosphoric acid solution or 10% citric acid solution and then processed continuously with $60^{\circ}C$ hot water. The analysis revealed that extracting the samples contained B($a$)P determined the rate of each 70%, 55%, 67% could increase. As a result the detecting method of B($a$)P contents could be improved.

  • We describe a solution to the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equation $\frac{dI}{dt}-\frac{1}{\tau}$I(t)=cV(t) where V(t) is a constant multiple of a Gaussian white noise. Our solution is based on a discrete set of Gaussian white noise obtained by taking sample points from a sum of single frequency harmonics that have random amplitudes, random frequencies, and random phases. Hence, it is different from the solution by the standard random walk using random numbers generated by the Box-Mueller algorithm. We prove that the power of the signal has the additive property, from which we derive that the Lyapunov characteristic exponent for our solution is positive. This compares with the solution by other methods where the noise is kept to be in an error range so that its Lyapunov exponent is negative.

  • Possible enhancement of myocardial protection with oxygenated crystalloid cardioplegia and blood cardioplegia were evaluated in a cardiac enzyme study. The bicarbonate-containing solution equilibrated with 100% oxygen becomes highly alkaline as carbon dioxide is released. 95% oxygen and 5% carbon dioxide was added to the crystalloid cardioplegic solution[St. Thomas` Hospital No. 2 Solution] for prevention of severe alkalinity of oxygenated crystalloid cardioplegia. Heart was arrested and reinfused every 20 minutes throughtout the ischemic period with crystalloid cardioplegia or oxygenated crystalloid cardioplegia or blood cardioplegia. Group I was a patient with crystalloid cardioplegia in 11 patients. Group II was a patient with oxygenated crystalloid cardioplegia in 9 patients. Group III was a patient with blood cardioplegia in 15 patients. The value of CK-MB was evaluated from the patient`s serum at 6 hours, 24 hours, and 48 hours postoperatively. In Group I and II, there was no significant change of CK-MB. In Group I and 11I, the value of CK-MB at postoperative 6 hours was 114 + 83 ng/ml and 56 + 22 ng/ml [P [0.05]. In conclusion, blood cardioplegia was superior to crystalloid cardioplegia.
