  • We consider a linear calibration problem, $y_i = $$\alpha + \beta (x_i - x_0) + \epsilon_i$, $i=1, 2, {\cdot}{\cdot},n$ $y_f = \alpha + \beta (x_f - x_0) + \epsilon, $ where we observe $(x_i, y_i)$'s for the controlled calibration experiments and later we make inference about $x_f$ from a new observation $y_f$. The objective of the calibration design problem is to find the optimal design $x = (x_i, \cdots, x_n$ that gives the best estimates for $x_f$. We compare Kim(1989)'s Bayesian design which minimizes the expected value of the posterior variance of $x_f$ and some optimal designs from literature. Kim suggested the Bayesian optimal design based on the analysis of the characteristics of the expected loss function and numerical must be equal to the prior mean and that the sum of squares be as large as possible. The designs to be compared are (1) Buonaccorsi(1986)'s AV optimal design that minimizes the average asymptotic variance of the classical estimators, (2) D-optimal and A-optimal design for the linear regression model that optimize some functions of $M(x) = \sum x_i x_i'$, and (3) Hunter & Lamboy (1981)'s reference design from their paper. In order to compare the designs which are optimal in some sense, we consider two criteria. First, we compare them by the expected posterior variance criterion and secondly, we perform the Monte Carlo simulation to obtain the HPD intervals and compare the lengths of them. If the prior mean of $x_f$ is at the center of the finite design interval, then the Bayesian, AV optimal, D-optimal and A-optimal designs are indentical and they are equally weighted end-point design. However if the prior mean is not at the center, then they are not expected to be identical. In this case, we demonstrate that the almost Bayesian-optimal design was slightly better than the approximate AV optimal design. We also investigate the effects of the prior variance of the parameters and solution for the case when the number of experiments is odd.

  • An optimal design procedure is proposed to effectively reduce the torque ripple by optimizing the rotor pole shape of the spoke type IPMSM with concentrated winding. The procedure is composed of two steps. In step I, the steepest descent method (SDM) is used with only two design variables to rapidly approach the optimal shape. From the near optimal rotor shape as a result of the step I, the design variables are reselected and the drawing spline curves are utilized to explain more complex shape with the Kriging model in step II. By using an optimal design procedure, we show that the optimized rotor pole shape of the spoke type IPMSM effectively reduces the torque ripple while still maintaining the average torque.

  • In this paper, an integrated optimal design software system for structural components has been developed which interfaces existing commercial codes for CAD, CAE and Optimization. They include specialized optimal design software codes such as iSIGHT and VisualDOC, optimization module imbedded in CAD software developed by CAD developers, and optimal design software systems based on API of commercial CAD software. The advantages of the CAD imbedded optimal design approach and those of specialized optimal design software are taken to develop the system. The user defines optimal design formulation in the user interface for problem definition in the CAD control stage, where design variables are directly selectable from the CAD model and various properties and performance functions defined. The commercial CAD codes, Open I-DEAS are used for the development. The resulting software is minimally connected to CAD and CAE systems while keeping maximum independence from each other. This assures flexibility and freedom for problem definition. Fatigue life optimization is taken as a nontrivial application area. As a specific example, the shape design of a knuckle part of an automobile is performed, where the minimum fatigue life over the material domain in terms of the number of cycles of a curb strike are maximized under the constraint of not exceeding the current mass. The fatigue life has been improved by four times of the initial life. The developed software is illustrated to maintain the advantages of existing optimal design software systems while improving independency and flexibility.

  • This paper presents the procedure for the optimal design of a PSC-I girder bridge considering life cycle cost (LCC). The load carrying capacity curves for the concrete deck, PSC-I girder and $\pi$-type pier were derived and used for the estimate of service lives. Total life cycle cost for the service life was calculated as sum of initial cost, damage cost, maintenance cost, repair and rehabilitation cost, user cost, and disposal cost. The advanced First Order Second Moment method was used to estimate the damage cost. The optimization method was applied to the design of PSC-I girder bridge. The objective function was set to the annual cost, which is defined by dividing the total life cycle cost by the service life, and constraints were formulated on the basis of Korean Standards. The optimal design was performed for various service lives and the effects of design factors were investigated.

  • The aim of this study is to find out the optimal goods for the marketing research through analysing the factor effecting the marketing survey by using the experimental design method. The decisive effecting factors in relation with the marketing survey were investigated as follows; 1. A row effect (Ai; i = 1, 2, ... n) is the design sorts of woman-clothes bias. 2. A column effect (Bi; i = 1, 2, ... n) is the woman-consumer bias. In this paper the experimental design, execution and statistical analys is were conducted to find out the optimal goods for marketing research.

  • The Fuzzy Preview Control (FPC) design methodology using I-PD Preview Control (IPC) and Optimal Preview Control (OPC)[6] are discussed in this paper. First we show a new fuzzy controller with single input single output, and build a relationship between it and the I-PD Control proposed by Kitamari, as well as Optimal Control with some specific equations. We also give the stability analysis with Lyapunov theorem. On this way, we can design a Fuzzy I-PD Controller (FIC) very easier and more effective. Then, preview control element design methodology of FCP was given according to IPC and OPC. Third, to make the system more rapidly and more little overshooting, two factors are given to adjust the controller's properties. At last, the performance of FPC is revealed via computer simulation using a nonlinear plant.

  • In this paper, design parameters of Rapid Thermal Processing(RrW) to minimize the wafer tempera ture uniformity errors are proposed. 1,anip ling positions and the wafer height are important parameters for waf er temperature uniformity in R'I'P. We propose the method to seek lamp ling positions and the wafer height for optimal temperature uniformity. l'he ~~roposed method is applied to seek optimal lamp ling positions and the waf er height of 8 inch wafer. 'I'o seek the optimal lamp ling positions and the wafer height, we var\ulcorner. lamp ling 110s itions and the wafer height and then formulate the wafer temperature uniformity problem to the linear programmi ng problem. Finally, it is shown that the wafer temperature uniformity in RI'I' designed by optimal prarneters is improved to comparing with Ii'l'P designed by the other method.

  • The pipes in the outdoor unit of an air conditioner are designed to reduce the vibration effect of the compressor. Three-dimensional structure of the pipe could provide various design choices and the resultant vibration characteristics of the outdoor units. A design program has been developed for an eligible parametric study of pipe design and automatic vibration analysis using commercial software, I-DEAS, and its macro. Optimal design of pipe configuration has been performed using the commercial software, iSIGHT. The optimized design shows 70 percents improvement in the vibration characteristics of the outdoor unit of an air conditioner.

  • The linear and quadratic log contrast model with mixtures on the strictly positive simplex, $$ x_{q-1} = {(x_1, \cdots, x_q):\sum x_, = 1 and \delta \leq \frac{x_i}{x_j} \leq \frac{1}{\delta} for all i,j},$$ are considered. Using the invariance arguments, symmetric D-optimal designs are investigated. The class of symmetric D-optimal designs for the linear log contrasts model is given. Any D-optimal design for the quadratic log contrast model is shown to metric D-optimal designs for q=3 and 4 cases are given.
