Numerical and experimental research on actuator forces in toggled active vibration control system (Part I: Numerical)

  • In this research, toggled actuator forces were examined. For achieving to this object, an actuator was installed in a toggle pattern in a S.D.O.F frame and actuator forces were investigated thru a numerical analysis process. Within past twenty years, researchers tried to use strong bracing systems as well as huge dampers to stabilize tall buildings during intensive earthquakes. Eventually, utilizing of active control systems containing actuators to counter massive excitations in structures was emerged. However, the more powerful earthquake excitations, the more robust actuators were required to be installed in the system. Subsequently, the latter process made disadvantage to the active control system due to very high price of the robust actuators as well as their large demands for electricity. Therefore, through a numerical process (Part I), influence of toggled actuator pattern was investigated. The algorithm used in the system was LQR and ATmega328 was selected as a control platform. For comparison, active tendon control system was chosen. The final results show clearly that using the toggle pattern mitigates the required actuator forces enormously leading to deploy much lighter actuators.

D-Methionine and 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid i alter beta-casein, proteins and metabolites linked in milk protein synthesis in bovine mammary epithelial cells

  • This study aims to determine the effects of D-methionine (D-Met) isomer and the methionine precursor 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid i (HMBi) supplementation on milk protein synthesis on immortalized bovine mammary epithelial cell (MAC-T). MAC-T cells were seeded using 10-cm dishes and cultured in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium/F12 (DMEM/F12) basic medium. The basic medium of DMEM/F12 was replaced with the lactogenic DMEM/ F12 differentiation medium when 90% of MAC-T cells reached confluency. The best dosage at 0.6 mM of D-Met and HMBi and incubation time at 72 h were used uniformly for all treatments. Each treatment was replicated six times wherein treatments were randomly assigned in a 6-well plate. Cell, medium, and total protein were determined using a bicinchoninic acid protein assay kit. Genes, proteomics and metabolomics analyses were also done to determine the mechanism of the milk protein synthesis pathway. Data were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with supplement type and plate as fixed effects. The least significant difference test was used to evaluate the differences among treatments. The HMBi treatment group had the highest beta-casein and S6 kinase beta-1 (S6K1) mRNA gene expression levels. HMBi and D-Met treatments have higher gene expressions compared to the control group. In terms of medium protein content, HMBi had a higher medium protein quantity than the control although not significantly different from the D-Met group. HMBi supplementation stimulated the production of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 subunit protein essential for protein translation initiation resulting in higher medium protein synthesis in the HMBi group than in the control group. The protein pathway analysis results showed that the D-Met group stimulated fructose-galactose metabolism, glycolysis pathway, phosphoinositide 3 kinase, and pyruvate metabolism. The HMBi group stimulated the pentose phosphate and glycolysis pathways. Metabolite analysis revealed that the D-Met treatment group increased seven metabolites and decreased uridine monophosphate (UMP) production. HMBi supplementation increased the production of three metabolites and decreased UMP and N-acetyl-L-glutamate production. Taken together, D-Met and HMBi supplementation are effective in stimulating milk protein synthesis in MAC-T cells by genes, proteins, and metabolites stimulation linked to milk protein synthesis.

Overexpression of Rb and E2F-1 in Ataxia-Telangiectasia Lymphocytes

  • AT cells exhibit defective cell cycle regulation following DNA damage. Previous studies have shown that induction of p53 and p2i proteins are delayed in response to ionizing rad iation, resulting in the failure of G1/S checkpoint in AT cells. In this study, further investigation of the molecular mechanisms underlying G1/S phase progression in AT cells was conducted. Exponentially growing normal and AT cells were exposed to 2 Gly of ionizing radiation and the expression levels and functional activities of Rb and E2F-1 proteins were determined. We observed overexpression of hyperphosphorylated Rb and E2F-1 proteins in AT cells, which was unaffected post-irradiation. Furthermore, gel shift assays showed that E2F-1-DNA binding was constitutive in AT cells, whereas it was inhibited in control cells following exposure to ionizing radiation. The data suggests that abnormalities in the function of Rb and E2F-1 proteins may also be responsible for the failure of AT cells to arrest in the G1/S checkpoint in response to DNA damage.

Enforcement of opacity security properties for ship information system

  • In this paper, we consider the cybersecurity issue of ship information system (SIS) from a new perspective which is called opacity. For a SIS, its confidential information (named as "secret") may be leaked through the working behaviors of each Distributed Control Unit (DCU) from an outside observer called an "intruder" which is able to determine ship's mission state by detecting the source of each data flow from the corresponding DCUs in SIS. Therefore we proposed a dual layer mechanism to enforce opacity by activating non-essential DCU during secret mission. This mechanism is calculated by two types of insertion functions: Safety-assured insertion function ($f_{IS}$) and Admissibility-assured insertion function ($f_{IA}$). Due to different objectives, $f_{IS}$ is designed to confuse intruder by constructing a non-secret behaviors from a unsafe one, and the division of $f_{IA}$ is to polish the modified output behaviors back to normal. We define the property of "$I_2$-Enforceability" that dual layer insertion functions has the ability to enforce opacity. By a given mission map of SIS and the marked secret missions, we propose an algorithm to select $f_{IS}$ and compute its matchable $f_{IA}$ and then the DCUs which should be activated to release non-essential data flow in each step is calculable.

FARE Device Operational Characteristics of Remote Controlled Fuelling Machine at Wolsong NPP

  • There are 4 CANDU6 type reactors operating at Wolsong site. For fuelling operation of certain fuel channels (with flow less than 21.5 kg/s) a FARE flow Assist Ram Extension) device is used. During the refuelling operation, two remote controlled F/Ms (Fuelling Machines) are attached to a designated fuel channel and carry out refuelling job. The upstream F/M inserts new fuel bundles into the fuel channel while the downstream F/M discharges spent fuel bundles. In order to assist fuelling operation of channels that has lower coolant How rate, the FARE device is used instead of F/M C-ram to push the fuel bundle string. The FARE device is essentially a How restricting element that produces enough drag force to push the fuel bundle string toward downstream F/M. Channels that require the use of FARE device for refuelling are located along the outside perimeter of reactor. This paper presents the FARE device design feature, steady state hydraulic and operational characteristics and behavior of the device when coupled with fuel bundle string during fuelling operation. The study showed that the steady state performance of FARE device meets the design objective that was confirmed by downstream F/M C-ram force to be positive.

  • This study was carried out to investigate; the alpha-fetoprotein, urea and free fatty acid in amniotic fluids and water filled multiple T-maze test of fetuses affected by Ethylenethiourea. The S.P.F. Sprague-Dawley female rats(10 weeks) were used in this study and these animals were divided into four groups; control group I (10mg/kg/day), group II(30mg/kg/day), group III(50mg/kg/day). The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. In the water filled multiple T-maze test of F1 male rats, The time and errors from start point to goal point of 30mg/kg group are significantly(p<0.001) increased from control group in 3rd day of test. In F1 female rats of 2nd day and 3rd day of water filled multiple T-maze test, The time and some errors in 30mg/kg group are significantly (p<0.05) increased from control group. 2. Alpha-fetoprotein values of all treated groups(10mg/kg, 30mg/kg and 50mg/kg) were significantly(p<0.001) decreased from control values in the amniotic fluids. 3. Urea values of ammniotic fluids in 50mg/kg group are significantly increased from control group. 4. Free fatty acid values of ammniotic fluids in 50mg/kg group are significantly increased from control group.

Effect of Nursing Intervention on the Knowledge, Health Beliefs, Self Efficacy and Rescreening Compliance of Cervical Cancer Screening Clients (검진유도 간호중재가 검진대상자의 자궁경부암 지식, 건강신념, 자기효능 및 재검진이행율에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was done to determine the effect of nursing interventions on the knowledge of cervical cancer, and health beliefs, self efficacy and rate of rescreening compliance. Method: This was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were 93 women who had experienced cervical cancer screening in S city and were randomly assigned to the experimental or control group. Intervention tools were a screening record pocket book, phone-coach. and watching a video(17mins). The data was collected from April to December, 2003 and analyzed using an $X^2-test$. t-test and ANCOVA. Results: The 1st hypothesis, "The Posttest know ledge score of the experimental group will be significantly higher than that of the control group" was supported(F=11.16, p= .001). The 2nd hypothesis, "The Posttest health belief score of the experimental group will be significantly higher than that of the control group" was not supported(F=3.38, p= .069). The 3rd hypothesis, "The Posttest self efficacy score of the experimental group will be significantly higher than that of the control group" was supported(F=4.36, p= .040). The 4th hypothesis, "The Rescreening compliance rate of the experimental group after the nursing intervention will be significantly higher than that of the control group" was supported($X^2=3.45$, p= .050). Conclusion: This nursing intervention was effective in increasing the knowledge of cervical cancer, and self efficacy percentage of rescreening compliance. Therefore I think this intervention can be used for promoting the rescreening compliance of women.

Effects of Sound Stress on Physiological Processes of the American Leafminer, Liriomyza trifolii, and Proteomic Analysis (스트레스 음파 처리에 따른 아메리카잎굴파리(Liriomyza trifolii)의 생리 변화와 프로테오믹 분석)

  • This study investigated the adverse effects of sound treatment on physiological processes of the American leafminer, Liriomyza trifolii, during several developmental stages. Larval feeding activity was analyzed by measuring feeding tunnel length. It was significantly suppressed by sound treatment (5,000 Hz, 95 dB). Sound treatment delayed the pupal period at 315 - 5,000 Hz and prevented adult emergence at 1,000 - 5,000 Hz. Female oviposition was also inhibited by the stress sound treatments. However, phototactic adult movement was not affected by sound treatment. Pupae treated with 5,000 Hz showed marked changes in protein patterns analyzed by two dimensional electrophoresis. MALDI-TOF analysis of specific protein spots indicated that trafficking protein particle complex I, triosephosphate isomerase, hypothetical protein TcasGA2_TC013388, polycystin-2, paraneoplastic neuronal antigen MA1, and tropomyosin I (isoform M) were predicted in the control insects and disappeared in the insects treated with sound. By contrast, DOCK9, cytoskeletal keratin II, and F0F1-ATP synthase beta subunit were predicted only in the sound-treated insects. Furthermore, stress sound significantly increased the susceptibility of L. trifolii to insecticides. These results suggest that physiological processes of L. trifolii are altered by sound stress, which may be exploited to develop a novel physical control tactic against L. trifolii.

Feedforward actuator controller development using the backward-difference method for real-time hybrid simulation

  • Real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) has emerged as an important tool for testing large and complex structures with a focus on rate-dependent specimen behavior. Due to the real-time constraints, accurate dynamic control of servo-hydraulic actuators is required. These actuators are necessary to realize the desired displacements of the specimen, however they introduce unwanted dynamics into the RTHS loop. Model-based actuator control strategies are based on linearized models of the servo-hydraulic system, where the controller is taken as the model inverse to effectively cancel out the servo-hydraulic dynamics (i.e., model-based feedforward control). An accurate model of a servo-hydraulic system generally contains more poles than zeros, leading to an improper inverse (i.e., more zeros than poles). Rather than introduce additional poles to create a proper inverse controller, the higher order derivatives necessary for implementing the improper inverse can be calculated from available information. The backward-difference method is proposed as an alternative to discretize an improper continuous time model for use as a feedforward controller in RTHS. This method is flexible in that derivatives of any order can be explicitly calculated such that controllers can be developed for models of any order. Using model-based feedforward control with the backward-difference method, accurate actuator control and stable RTHS are demonstrated using a nine-story steel building model implemented with an MR damper.

  • For many years, many pilots lost their lives and aircrafts due to GLOC(Gravity-induced Loss Of Consciousness). Due to the emergence of high-gravity maneuvering aircraft such as the F-16, F-15 and T-50, the automatic GLOC detection and recovery systems are necessary to increase the aircraft safeties even when the pilot loses his consciousness due to high-G maneuvering. This paper addresses the design of GLOC detection, warning and recovery algorithm based on a model of supersonic jet trainer. The system is solely controlled by the pilot's control input (i.e., control stick force) and aircraft status such as attitude, airspeed, altitude and so forth. And, moreover, it does not depend upon any pilot physiological condition. The test evaluation results show that the developed system supports the recovery of an aircraft from the unusual aircraft attitude and improves the aircraft safeties even when the pilot loses his consciousness due to high-G maneuvering.
